In Diablo 4, Runes come from several activities, including Vessel of Hatred campaign bosses, Whisper Caches, World Bosses, and Kurast Undercity runs. Use one Ritual Rune and one Invocation Rune together in an item with two sockets to make a Runeword—or save the specific Runes needed to craft certain Mythic Uniques at the Blacksmith. Runewords require the Vessel of Hatred expansion outside the Public Test Realm (PTR).
Where to get Runes
Blizzard has added Rune sources across several patches. The guarantees and reward details below are claims in the named patch notes, not a promise that every activity has identical rewards in every later patch. Blizzard’s notes do not provide comparable time-per-Rune or drop-rate figures, so they do not establish which activity is fastest.

| Activity | Rune reward described by Blizzard | Trade-off or scaling |
|---|---|---|
| Vessel of Hatred campaign boss encounters | Guaranteed Runes in the 2.0 patch notes (2024). | No comparable time-per-Rune figure stated. Blizzard’s 2.0 patch notes |
| Whisper Caches | Guaranteed Runes in the 2.0 patch notes (2024). | No comparable time-per-Rune figure stated. Blizzard’s 2.0 patch notes |
| World Bosses | Guaranteed Runes in the 2.0 patch notes (2024). | No comparable time-per-Rune figure stated. Blizzard’s 2.0 patch notes |
| First-time Stronghold clear | Grants magic Runes, according to the 2.0 patch notes (2024). | The note specifies a first clear; it does not establish a repeatable Rune farm. Blizzard’s 2.0 patch notes |
| Mercenary Rapport Track Augment Caches in Torment | Guaranteed Runes in the 2.1 patch notes (2025). | The amount scales with Torment Tier. Blizzard’s 2.1 patch notes |
| Kurast Undercity | At least one Rune per run, according to the 2.3 patch notes (2025). | A Runes Tribute gives more Runes per attunement, with rewards scaling by Torment Level. The Tribute is a way to increase the run’s Rune rewards, not a stated prerequisite for the baseline drop. Blizzard’s 2.3 patch notes |
| Tribute of Mystique | The 2.5 patch notes (2025) say its magic Rune rewards were “significantly increased.” | Blizzard did not publish a percentage or count for the increase. Blizzard’s 2.5 patch notes |
Choose among these based on what you are already doing and which reward conditions suit you: campaign or cache rewards, Torment scaling, a first-time clear, or a Tribute-enhanced Undercity run. The official notes do not support a fastest-farm ranking.
How to use Runes in a Runeword
A Runeword combines two roles in an item with two sockets: a Ritual Rune establishes the trigger and generates Offering when you meet its condition; an Invocation Rune spends that Offering to activate its effect. Runewords require Vessel of Hatred outside the PTR, according to Blizzard’s launch guide.
#1 Best Overall
- Use an item with two sockets.
- Socket one Ritual Rune to set the action or condition that generates Offering.
- Socket one Invocation Rune to spend Offering on its effect.
Blizzard’s 2.0 PTR guide illustrates the system with Bac, a Ritual Rune whose condition is for the character to move 5 meters, and Jah, whose effect replaces the next Evade with Sorcerer’s Teleport. These are examples from the 2024 PTR explanation, not a guarantee of current Rune balance or effects; consult the live in-game Rune descriptions for what your Runes do now. Use certain Runes to craft Mythic Uniques
Runes also have a crafting use. Blizzard’s 2.0 patch notes describe crafting a specific Mythic Unique at the Blacksmith with Resplendent Sparks and the Rune set unique to that item. The notes do not provide a complete current recipe list, so check the live Blacksmith crafting screen for the required Rune set before spending materials. Blizzard’s 2.0 patch notes

Socketing and removing Runes
In the 2.0 patch notes, Blizzard says that socketing a Rune into an item containing Gems—or a Gem into an item containing Runes—automatically removes the contents already socketed in that item. The same notes say unsocketing no longer costs Gold. These are patch-specific details; check the live interface if it behaves differently. Blizzard’s 2.0 patch notes

Blizzard’s latest cited notes are for patch 3.2.2, Build #73764, dated September 30, 2026. They list fixes involving Edge and Lore Runewords and Tal and Sol Runes. This confirms the system was still receiving maintenance, but the notes do not replace the earlier drop and reward details with a consolidated Rune-farming guide. Blizzard’s 3.2.2 patch notes
