The clearest documented route for leveling a Warlock in Diablo 4 is an Abyss-focused Dread Claws build. It uses Shadowform to amplify Abyss attacks, Mastermind Soul Shard with Laalish for additional damage and mobility, and Profane Sentinel as a Greater Demon turret. Level with Terror Swarm first, then change to Metamorphosis when you reach level 40 and unlock the Terror Demon passive.
This recommendation comes from a PC Gamer guide published April 29, 2026, rather than a controlled comparison or a verified October 2026 ranking. Treat it as a strong, coherent progression plan, and recheck skill descriptions after any patch that changes Warlock talents, Soul Shards, or Abyss skills.

What this Warlock leveling build is designed to do
The build revolves around a simple interaction: generate and maintain Shadowform, then spend that advantage on Abyss-tagged attacks. Dread Claws is the main attack. The skill sends overlapping waves of slashes through targets, and the cited guide attributes its effectiveness to the Warlock’s skill passives, Shadowform bonuses, and a damage increase while stealthed. You are not trying to assemble a single burst combo; you are building a repeatable loop that keeps your offensive buffs active while your summons and turret add damage.
Mastermind Soul Shard supplies Laalish, a shadow-worm minion. The guide describes the shard’s damage bonus and movement-speed increase as scaling with Shadowform stacks. Command Laalish creates an area that helps generate Shadowform, so the minion is part of the engine rather than a decorative pet. Profane Sentinel fills the Greater Demon or turret role, while Subjugation Fragment improves Greater Demons and helps regenerate Dominance.

The progression has one important breakpoint. Terror Swarm provides autonomous area damage while you are still unlocking the class’s deeper tools, so the guide uses it before level 40. At level 40, Terror Demon changes Metamorphosis into an Abyss skill, grants Shadowform stacks over time, and allows Abyss skills to preserve stealth while Metamorphosis is active. That is the point at which the build’s separate pieces become a more complete Abyss-and-stealth loop.
For the detailed skill and item outline, see PC Gamer’s Warlock build guide. Its author reported spending 20 hours with the class, but that is personal play experience, not an independent damage test or a season-wide performance statistic.
Access requirements and when each mechanic appears
Warlock is an expansion class. You need the Diablo IV base game and the Lord of Hatred expansion; owning the base game alone does not provide the class. Blizzard’s class announcement gives April 28, 2026 as the expansion availability date, while the launch article describes a regional rollout beginning April 27 PDT. Use the localized date shown for your region rather than treating those times as contradictory. The official class overview is available in Blizzard’s Warlock announcement, and the expansion and seasonal context is in Blizzard’s Lord of Hatred and Season of Reckoning guide.

The expansion-era level cap is 70, and Blizzard says the redesigned skill trees open branches and variants as your character levels. That means the build below is a route through a changing tree, not a promise that every listed component is available on the first character level.
The Disciple of the Forbidden class quest begins in Ked Bardu after level 15. Completing that quest is separate from simply creating and leveling a Warlock. In practical terms, you can begin the character’s early leveling route before the quest, but you should not expect the Soul Shard-related synergy to be available at level one. Once the quest and the relevant systems are unlocked, add Mastermind and its Laalish interaction to the rotation.
Build at a glance
| Function | Recommended choice | How it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Main damage | Dread Claws | Overlapping Abyss slashes; benefits from Shadowform and stealth-related bonuses. |
| Core offensive state | Shadowform | Provides the stacks that improve the Abyss damage loop and scale Laalish’s support. |
| Minion and mobility support | Mastermind Soul Shard with Laalish | Laalish adds shadow damage and movement speed; Command Laalish creates an area that helps generate Shadowform. |
| Greater Demon or turret | Profane Sentinel | Adds persistent damage while you use Dread Claws. |
| Greater Demon support | Subjugation Fragment | Empowers Greater Demons and helps regenerate Dominance. |
| Pre-level-40 ultimate | Terror Swarm | Autonomous area damage while the later Metamorphosis interaction is unavailable. |
| Level-40 transition | Metamorphosis with Terror Demon | Turns Metamorphosis into an Abyss skill, supplies Shadowform stacks each second, and preserves stealth for Abyss skills while active. |
| Stat direction | Abyss damage and maximum life | Matches the guide’s offensive priority while giving the leveling character a larger health buffer. |
The table is a progression outline, not a requirement to own every named item. Skill names, ranks, and numerical effects can change, so read the current in-game tooltip before committing points.
How the Shadowform and Abyss engine works
Build Shadowform before demanding maximum damage
Shadowform is the build’s central state. Your goal is to create stacks through the available Warlock actions, then use those stacks to improve Abyss attacks. Command Laalish is especially important because the guide says its area helps generate Shadowform. Stand close enough to that area to benefit from it, but do not remain in avoidable enemy attacks merely to keep a stack cycle going.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMastermind’s Laalish also scales its damage bonus and movement-speed bonus with Shadowform. This gives the same resource both an offensive and a positioning purpose: more stacks improve the worm’s contribution and help you move between packs or out of danger. If your Shadowform is repeatedly falling off, the problem is usually a rotation or positioning issue before it is a gear issue.
Use Dread Claws as the payoff
Dread Claws sends overlapping slashing waves, so aim across the densest part of a pack rather than at a single peripheral target. The attack is tagged Abyss, which is why the Metamorphosis and Terror Demon breakpoint matters later. Before that breakpoint, continue using the skill whenever its current resource and cooldown conditions allow, but do not assume it already has every post-level-40 interaction.

Stealth is part of the damage story described by the guide. After Terror Demon is active, Metamorphosis can keep Abyss skills stealthed while the effect is running. Use that window to deliver Dread Claws through priority targets, then return to Shadowform generation and summon management instead of waiting passively for another burst.
Let the support pieces work while you attack
Profane Sentinel should be placed where it can keep firing into the fight while you angle Dread Claws. Subjugation Fragment is chosen to strengthen the Greater Demon and regenerate Dominance, so using the turret and maintaining its support effects should happen as part of normal combat, not as a separate side task.
Laalish and Profane Sentinel provide background pressure, but they do not replace targeting. Elites and bosses still require you to point Dread Claws through them, maintain Shadowform, and use your movement speed to avoid telegraphed attacks.
Level-by-level progression route
Levels 1–14: establish the attack pattern
At the very beginning, prioritize the currently available Dread Claws path and the passives that improve Abyss damage or general survivability. The source guide does not establish universal rank-by-rank values, and the redesigned trees can expose variants as you level, so use the in-game descriptions for the exact point order on your patch.
- Put early points toward Dread Claws and its usable upgrades.
- Take accessible Abyss damage passives when they are offered without making the character too fragile.
- Buy maximum-life improvements when the alternative is a narrow damage increase that leaves you dying to ordinary packs.
- Use your first movement or defensive option to keep attacking from a safe angle rather than face-tanking.
At this stage, the objective is consistency. Kill ordinary enemies with the slashing waves, move between groups, and learn the distance at which overlapping waves hit the most targets.
Level 15: start the class quest when available
After level 15, travel to Ked Bardu to begin Disciple of the Forbidden, as specified by Blizzard. The quest is a progression gate for the class’s broader systems; it is not evidence that every Soul Shard effect is active from the moment the character is created.

If you postpone it, continue the early Dread Claws and Terror Swarm route, but remember that the Mastermind-Laalish loop cannot be treated as a complete part of your build until its required systems are unlocked.
Levels 15–39: add Terror Swarm and assemble the loop
Use Terror Swarm as the guide’s early ultimate. Its autonomous area damage lets you keep clearing while you position Dread Claws and build Shadowform. During this phase:
- Open a pack with Terror Swarm when the cooldown is available.
- Use Command Laalish to create the Shadowform-generating area once that Soul Shard interaction is unlocked.
- Build Shadowform stacks before spending your most important Abyss attacks into elites.
- Place Profane Sentinel and maintain Subjugation Fragment’s Greater Demon support.
- Finish the pack with Dread Claws, repositioning with Laalish’s movement-speed benefit when possible.
Do not spend all of your attention chasing perfect stacks on low-health trash. The point of Terror Swarm is to make ordinary pulls forgiving while you learn the engine. Save your careful setup for elites, events, and bosses where the extra Shadowform time produces a meaningful payoff.

Level 40 and beyond: switch to Metamorphosis
At level 40, unlock the Terror Demon passive and move from Terror Swarm to Metamorphosis, following the cited guide’s breakpoint. Terror Demon makes Metamorphosis an Abyss skill, grants Shadowform stacks each second, and allows Abyss skills to preserve stealth while Metamorphosis is active.

- Activate Metamorphosis as you enter a dangerous pack or approach an elite.
- Use the resulting Shadowform generation to establish your stack count instead of waiting for a long preparatory sequence.
- Cast or maintain Command Laalish so its area continues supporting the Shadowform cycle.
- Place Profane Sentinel and keep Dominance regeneration moving through Subjugation Fragment.
- Use the stealth-preserving window for Dread Claws against the highest-value targets.
- When Metamorphosis ends, return to the normal Shadowform-generation pattern rather than standing still for the next cooldown.
From this point, the guide prioritizes Dread Claws, Profane Sentinel, and Metamorphosis, with Abyss damage and maximum life as supporting priorities. Continue checking the current tooltip text because the exact rank values are not established by the guide.
Skill-point priorities and practical choices
Dread Claws first among damage tools
Dread Claws is the skill around which the recommendation is built. Give it priority when the tree offers direct improvements, then choose Abyss passives that increase the damage of the attacks you use most often. Avoid scattering points across unrelated tags merely because they are available; every extra branch should either improve the Abyss hit, maintain Shadowform, support the demons, or keep you alive.
Profane Sentinel and Metamorphosis next
Profane Sentinel contributes damage while you are positioning and attacking, and Metamorphosis becomes substantially more relevant after Terror Demon at level 40. The guide’s priority order places both alongside Dread Claws rather than treating them as optional flavor skills.
Do not neglect maximum life
Maximum life is one of the guide’s stated priorities. Leveling content can punish a character that deals good damage but dies before its summons or Shadowform engine has time to work. Select life increases when they are offered in the same branch as modest damage gains, and replace damaged gear promptly instead of waiting for an ideal unique.
Gear, Soul Shards, aspects, and uniques
The named uniques are targets to keep or pursue if they drop, not entry requirements. A leveling character should use a well-rolled temporary item rather than delay progression for a specific legendary or unique.
| Slot | Item named by the guide | How to treat it while leveling |
|---|---|---|
| Dagger | Litany of Sable | Desirable upgrade if it drops; do not halt leveling while waiting for it. |
| Ring | Seal of the Ophanim | Useful target, but replace it with a stronger ordinary or legendary ring when necessary. |
| Helm | Rictus of Terror | Keep for the build if acquired; it is not required to begin the route. |
| Amulet | Night Terror | Desirable support piece, not a prerequisite for Dread Claws leveling. |
Deeper Shadows and Demonic Aspect are the useful aspects specifically called out by the guide. Apply them when you have suitable gear and the imprint will improve your current character; do not sacrifice a large defensive upgrade solely to force an aspect onto an outdated item.
The guide also notes that the Horadric Cube can upgrade a common item into a possible unique after you unlock it through the Lord of Hatred campaign. That is a chance-based upgrade path, not a guarantee of one of the four named items. Save the materials for a character that has reached the relevant campaign unlock and has a clear reason to use the attempt.
What to look for before uniques appear
- Items that improve Abyss damage or the damage of Dread Claws.
- Maximum life and other defensive values that prevent deaths during elite encounters.
- Resource or cooldown improvements that let you maintain Metamorphosis, Profane Sentinel, or your Shadowform cycle more reliably.
- Movement speed or mobility support, because Laalish’s scaling movement benefit is part of the build’s positioning advantage.
Exact affix names and values should come from your current item tooltips. The available guide establishes the direction of the build, not a complete, patch-locked loot filter.

A combat rotation you can repeat
Use this as a decision order rather than a rigid timer:
- Approach from an angle. Move to line up Dread Claws with several enemies, leaving a route out of ground effects.
- Start the engine. Command Laalish to create its area and begin building Shadowform.
- Deploy support. Place Profane Sentinel where it can continue attacking the pack, and maintain the Greater Demon support supplied by Subjugation Fragment.
- Use the phase-appropriate ultimate. Before level 40, cast Terror Swarm for autonomous area damage. At level 40 and after Terror Demon is unlocked, use Metamorphosis for Shadowform generation and the stealth-preserving Abyss interaction.
- Spend the window. Cast Dread Claws through elites and dense groups while Shadowform and stealth bonuses are active.
- Reposition. Use movement speed and short movements between waves rather than standing inside attacks to preserve a stack.
- Rebuild. When the ultimate or Shadowform state ends, repeat the Laalish-and-support setup instead of waiting without attacking.
Against a lone boss, place the turret where it will remain active, aim every Dread Claws wave through the boss, and use movement to handle mechanics. Against a large pack, prioritize overlap and survival; killing peripheral trash is less important than keeping your attack path clear to the elite.
Survivability and resource troubleshooting
You die before Shadowform pays off
- Replace low-level armor and jewelry before chasing a perfect offensive aspect.
- Take the maximum-life options recommended for the setup.
- Place Profane Sentinel before committing to a long stationary attack sequence.
- Use the movement-speed benefit from Laalish to leave telegraphed attacks instead of trying to out-damage them.
Shadowform stacks keep disappearing
- Check that Command Laalish’s area is actually covering your position.
- Use Metamorphosis after level 40 with Terror Demon so its stated per-second stack generation is active.
- Stop spending time on low-value targets far outside the support area; regroup the pack and rebuild.
- Read the current tooltip for your skill variant, since a patch may alter generation or duration details.
Dominance or Greater Demon uptime feels poor
Subjugation Fragment is included specifically to empower Greater Demons and regenerate Dominance. Confirm that Profane Sentinel is deployed and that you are not replacing the fragment with an unrelated effect before concluding the build lacks resource support. If the issue persists, favor gear and passives that improve your current resource flow rather than adding another damage-only option.
Dread Claws feels weak on elites
Check the order of operations: Shadowform and the support demons should be active before the main attack window. Make sure your skill points are actually reaching Dread Claws and Abyss damage passives, and replace obsolete weapons. The available evidence does not provide a numerical damage threshold, so a low result should be diagnosed through rotation, gear level, and tooltip changes rather than compared with an invented benchmark.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How to judge this route against another Warlock build
The available sources document one detailed leveling build, not a fair current-patch comparison of several Warlock setups. If you are deciding between this route and another community build, use the same questions for both rather than assuming a universal winner:
| Comparison question | What to inspect |
|---|---|
| How quickly does the identity appear? | Count the levels and quests required before the build’s defining mechanic is available. |
| How many setup steps are required? | Note whether you must place a turret, create an area, build stacks, and then activate a cooldown before attacking. |
| What does it clear best? | Separate dense-pack area clear from single-target elite and boss pressure. |
| How forgiving is it? | Look for maximum-life investment, mobility, autonomous damage, and how much damage is lost when the rotation is interrupted. |
| How gear-dependent is it? | Check whether the core loop works with ordinary drops or requires several named uniques. |
Those are decision criteria, not measured results. Neither Blizzard nor the cited guide publishes a current-season win rate, leveling-time advantage, damage ranking, or leaderboard position for this build. Blizzard’s seasonal article points players toward community resources such as Maxroll, Icy Veins, Wowhead, PureDiablo, Mobalytics, and D4Builds for update checks, but a listing is not proof that any one build is best.
Keeping the build current through Season of Reckoning
Blizzard’s Season of Reckoning material describes redesigned skill trees with branches and variants that open as characters level. A patch can therefore change the best point order even if the overall Abyss concept remains recognizable. Before starting a new character or spending a respec currency, inspect the live descriptions for Dread Claws, Shadowform, Terror Demon, Metamorphosis, Mastermind, and Profane Sentinel.
Use the April 29, 2026 guide as the dated basis for this route, then verify three things in your client: whether Terror Demon still gives the stated Metamorphosis behavior, whether Command Laalish still generates Shadowform in the described way, and whether the named uniques and aspects retain their effects. If any of those interactions changed, keep the same evaluation framework but adjust the affected step instead of assuming the old breakpoint remains optimal.
When to move beyond leveling
At level 70, the character has reached the expansion-era cap described by Blizzard. Leveling and endgame optimization are different tasks: a setup that safely unlocks skills and clears campaign content may not use the same final ranks, affix balance, or itemization as a specialized endgame build.
Before changing everything, identify what you enjoy about the route. If it is the Shadowform-and-Abyss playstyle, preserve Dread Claws, the Laalish support, and the Metamorphosis interaction while replacing temporary gear and refining passives. If you prefer a different activity, compare its demands using the criteria above—setup time, area clear, single-target pressure, survivability, and gear dependence—rather than assuming the leveling recommendation must remain your final configuration.
Bottom line for a new Warlock
Start with Dread Claws and Terror Swarm, complete the level-15 Ked Bardu class quest when available, add Mastermind and Laalish to build Shadowform, and use Profane Sentinel with Subjugation Fragment for persistent support. At level 40, unlock Terror Demon and switch to Metamorphosis so the Abyss, Shadowform, and stealth interactions work together. Keep the named uniques and aspects when they drop, but do not make the character dependent on them. This is the most clearly documented route in the supplied evidence, not a proven universal winner for every October 2026 patch.
