Diablo IV was the first Activision Blizzard game added to Xbox Game Pass. Xbox announced the move on February 15, 2024, and the game became available on March 28, 2024—roughly nine months after its original commercial launch.
The distinction matters today: this was a Game Pass catalog addition, not a day-one release, and access to the base game does not automatically include every expansion, edition, cosmetic item, or other paid add-on.

What Xbox actually announced
Xbox described Diablo IV as “the first Activision Blizzard game on Xbox Game Pass” in its February 15, 2024 announcement. The announcement said the game would arrive on March 28 and framed it as the beginning of a broader effort to bring Activision and Blizzard games to the service.

When did Diablo 4 arrive on Game Pass?
- Announcement: February 15, 2024.
- Game Pass availability: March 28, 2024.
- Launch timing: A catalog addition, not a day-one release.
Xbox’s March 2024 Game Pass schedule confirmed the March 28 date for console and PC. Diablo IV originally launched commercially in June 2023, so it reached Game Pass about nine months later. It was listed separately from titles launching day one.
Which Game Pass plans included it?
At launch, Xbox specifically named:
- Xbox Game Pass Ultimate
- PC Game Pass
- Xbox Game Pass for Console
Xbox said subscribers could play on Xbox and PC through those plans. Game Pass plan names and benefits can change, however, and availability may vary by region. Do not assume that every plan labeled “Game Pass” provides the same catalog or platform access. Xbox’s later plan explainer distinguishes PC Game Pass, Core, Standard, and Ultimate.

What did a subscription provide?
Game Pass provided access to the base game through the relevant catalog. It did not turn every Diablo IV product into an included entitlement. Expansions, premium editions, cosmetic bundles, battle-pass content, and other paid add-ons should be checked separately.

PC requirements: Xbox app access still involves Battle.net
PC Game Pass does not necessarily mean that the entire experience runs only through the Xbox app. Xbox’s Game Pass guide says that PC players need:
- A Battle.net account.
- An internet connection.
- A linked Microsoft/Xbox account and Battle.net account.
Use the Battle.net account you intend to keep using. Linking the wrong account can create confusion over characters, progression, and entitlements. The game also requires an internet connection, so Game Pass access does not make Diablo IV an offline game.

Cross-play and cross-progression
Xbox’s guide describes Diablo IV as supporting cross-play and cross-progression across available platforms. In practice, this depends on linking the correct accounts. Platform-specific purchases and entitlements may not transfer identically, so cross-progression should not be treated as a universal transfer of every purchased item or edition.
Players on PlayStation, Steam, or Battle.net should also understand that a Game Pass subscription is not a universal license for those versions. The Xbox page lists Xbox, PC, Battle.net, Steam, and PlayStation as separate ways to play. Game Pass access applies through the supported Xbox or PC subscription route, not automatically to the PlayStation version.

Is Game Pass better than buying Diablo 4?
There is no universal answer because the choice depends on how long you expect to play and which edition or expansions you want.
| Game Pass is usually the better fit when… | Buying may be better when… |
|---|---|
| You want to try the game without paying the full standalone price. | You want permanent access after canceling your subscription. |
| You already use Game Pass for several other games. | You want a specific edition, expansion bundle, or premium package. |
| You are comfortable with the online and account-linking requirements. | You expect to play for a long time and the purchase costs less than continued subscriptions. |
| You play on Xbox or PC through a qualifying plan. | You mainly play on PlayStation or another platform. |
Compare the current regional subscription price with the current standalone edition and expansion prices. Game Pass is access for as long as the title remains in the catalog and your subscription is active; it is not the same as owning the game.
New-player advice
Xbox’s 2024 onboarding guide recommended creating a character in the Seasonal realm, leaving “Skip Campaign” unselected, and completing the story campaign before starting a fresh seasonal character if desired. That advice was tied to the 2024 seasonal context, so the current season and interface may differ.
What “first Activision Blizzard game” did not mean
- It did not mean the first Activision Blizzard game ever made.
- It did not mean a day-one Game Pass launch.
- It did not mean every Activision Blizzard King title arrived at the same time.
- It did not mean Game Pass unlocked the PlayStation, Steam, or Battle.net purchase version.
- It did not mean that all expansions and premium content were included.
The significance was that Diablo IV became the first publicly announced Game Pass arrival from the Activision Blizzard catalog after Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard King. Xbox presented the move as the start of a larger plan, but that announcement was not a complete release schedule for every future Activision or Blizzard game.
Current status
As of the Xbox listing checked on August 18, 2026, Diablo IV was still presented as included with Game Pass. That status, the qualifying plans, and regional availability can change. Check the live Xbox product page and your local Game Pass signup page before subscribing.
