How does the Warlock work in Diablo II: Resurrected, and which of its three paths should you choose? Reign of the Warlock adds the class, built around demon binding, weapon manipulation, and ranged hellfire and void magic. The best fit depends on whether you want a demon to fight beside you, weapons at the center of your skills, or attacks cast from range. Blizzard describes the class and its mechanics, but does not provide a comparative build ranking.
What is the Warlock in Diablo II: Resurrected?
Blizzard describes the Warlock as a dark scholar skilled in binding demons. The class arrives with the Reign of the Warlock expansion, which also adds content beyond the class, including Terror Zone changes, Colossal Ancients, and quality-of-life features. See Blizzard’s Reign of the Warlock overview for the official feature list.

Its three paths—Demon, Eldritch, and Chaos—offer distinct mechanical identities, not just different damage themes. Blizzard’s overview explains their core hooks, but does not compare damage, clear speed, leveling efficiency, or endgame performance. Choose by playstyle unless you have current, patch-specific evidence for a more precise build decision.
Which Warlock path should you choose?
| Path | Core focus | What it feels suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Demon | Binding, empowering, or consuming demons | Players who want demon allies and a choice between keeping a bound demon in the fight or spending it for an effect |
| Eldritch | Weapon manipulation and weapon-centered attacks | Players drawn to hexes, weapon effects, duplicates, and thrown attacks |
| Chaos | Ranged hellfire and void magic | Players who want to attack from range with projectiles and area-focused effects |
The table reflects Blizzard’s descriptions of the paths, not a ranking of their strength. For an informed build comparison, you would also need current game data on damage type and enemy resistances, solo or group role, leveling versus endgame use, item dependence, survivability, and clear speed; the official class overview does not establish those comparisons.

- Diablo II: Resurrected breathes new life into Blizzard Entertainment’s acclaimed ARPG and its expansion, Diablo II: Lord of Destruction, from beginning to end. Return to fight for Sanctuary and discover the fate of the mysterious Dark Wanderer rebuilt in all-new 3D graphics, brand-new cinematics, remastered audio… and the same classic Diablo II gameplay you remember.
Demon: fight alongside—or consume—your bound demon
The Demon path lets the Warlock summon Goatmen, Tainted, and Defilers. Blizzard says each has distinct abilities and strengths, and that Warlock skills can enhance them. The class can also bind demons encountered in battle, then consume an enslaved demon to drain its life force and augment its own abilities. That creates the path’s defining choice: keep a bound demon as a combat presence or trade it for an effect. The overview does not specify an optimal summon count or exact values for these mechanics.
Eldritch: make weapons part of the magic
Eldritch skills manipulate weapons through magic. Blizzard describes hexes that can cripple or drain enemies, make affected enemies explode, create ethereal weapon duplicates, and enable thrown-weapon attacks. The Warlock also has a passive that allows a two-handed weapon to be wielded in one hand while an offhand is equipped at the same time. That flexibility is a distinctive class feature; it does not, by itself, establish a best weapon setup or higher damage.

- The Diablo Prime Evil Collection includes Diablo II: Resurrected, Diablo III, the Reaper of Souls expansion which includes Act V, Adventure Mode and the Crusader class, and the Rise of the Necromancer pack, with the Necromancer class, and additional cosmetic items. This collection also includes the Mephisto pet and the fearsome wings, Hatred’s Grasp, for Diablo III.
Chaos: cast hellfire and void at range
Chaos centers on ranged hellfire and void magic. Blizzard names Miasma projectiles, Apocalypse, and an ability that opens the Abyss to draw in and annihilate nearby enemies. These descriptions convey the path’s theme and mechanics, but not how its skills compare numerically with Demon or Eldritch.
Warlock items and what they tell you
Blizzard identifies Grimoires as Warlock offhand items. They can have Warlock staff modifiers and may carry additional fire or magic weapon damage. Daggers can also roll Warlock skill modifiers, and the expansion adds Warlock sets, runewords, and unique items. Blizzard’s examples include Bane’s Garments and Horazon’s Splendor.

These categories are useful when evaluating equipment for a chosen path, but the presence of a skill modifier or a named item does not make it best-in-slot. The official overview does not provide item rankings, build breakpoints, or a tested equipment progression.
What do you need to play the Warlock?
You need Diablo II: Resurrected and access to Reign of the Warlock. Blizzard says owners of the base game can purchase the expansion to unlock the Warlock and associated bonuses; its page lists the Infernal Edition as including both the base game and expansion. Blizzard also says Game Pass access includes the base game, not Reign of the Warlock. Because store offers and platform terms can change, check the current official listing for your platform before buying.

- Play solo or form a party of up to four other heroes.
Is there a strongest Warlock build right now?
The official class overview does not establish a strongest path or build. Blizzard’s April 10, 2026 PTR 3.2 announcement says the test realm introduced Warlock balance changes alongside Terror Zone updates. A PTR announcement alone does not show which changes shipped to the live game or identify the strongest current build. Check official live patch notes and current game data before relying on a build ranking.
