There is no universally best Diablo IV class for solo play or beginners. Solo play is supported, but Blizzard’s official sources do not establish that one class is easiest or performs best for every solo activity. Choose by the combat style you want, and check expansion access before settling on Spiritborn, Paladin, or Warlock.
Can you play Diablo IV solo?
Yes. Blizzard’s June 2, 2023 launch guide says players can explore the campaign at their own pace, find items without joining a group, and enter keyed dungeons alone or in groups of up to four. That confirms solo play is a supported way to experience the game; it does not establish that every class is equally easy or effective in every activity.
Which classes can you choose?
The original roster is Barbarian, Druid, Necromancer, Rogue, and Sorcerer. Spiritborn arrived with Vessel of Hatred; Lord of Hatred added Paladin and Warlock. The class descriptions below focus on the combat identity Blizzard highlights, not a difficulty or power ranking.
| Class | Combat identity | Access |
|---|---|---|
| Barbarian | Direct close-combat warrior. | Original class; part of the base roster. |
| Druid | Nature powers and shapeshifting. | Original class; part of the base roster. |
| Necromancer | A choice to consider if minions appeal to you. | Original class; part of the base roster. |
| Rogue | A choice to consider if agile attacks appeal to you. | Original class; part of the base roster. |
| Sorcerer | Elemental magic. | Original class; part of the base roster. |
| Spiritborn | Mobile, close-range combat; the Spirit Hall lets you choose among Jaguar, Gorilla, Eagle, and Centipede Guardian Spirits. | Requires Vessel of Hatred. |
| Paladin | Sword-and-shield combat using the Light. | Requires Lord of Hatred. |
| Warlock | Demon-commanding combat using infernal powers. | Requires Lord of Hatred. |
Blizzard’s launch article describes the original five classes; its July 18, 2024 Spiritborn article describes that class and its Spirit Hall. Blizzard’s March 11, 2026 Lord of Hatred preview describes Paladin and Warlock. The Season of Hell’s Legacy page, accessed October 4, 2026, lists the expansion requirements. Both expansions require the Diablo IV base game.

How to choose a class as a beginner or solo player
Start with the kind of moment-to-moment combat you want, rather than a claim that a particular class is best. These are preference prompts, not promises about difficulty or performance:
- Want direct weapon combat? Consider Barbarian for close-combat warrior play, or Paladin if you want a sword-and-shield identity and own Lord of Hatred.
- Prefer nature powers or changing forms? Consider Druid.
- Like the idea of minions? Consider Necromancer.
- Want agile attacks? Consider Rogue.
- Prefer elemental spellcasting? Consider Sorcerer.
- Want mobile, close-range combat with a choice of Guardian Spirits? Consider Spiritborn, provided you own Vessel of Hatred.
- Want demon-commanding, infernal magic? Consider Warlock, provided you own Lord of Hatred.
If you are new and undecided, choose among the original five by combat feel first. That avoids making expansion ownership part of the decision unless you specifically want one of the expansion classes. No official beginner-difficulty comparison or authoritative solo-performance ranking for all eight classes is established by the cited Blizzard sources.

Why class rankings need a date
Blizzard says Lord of Hatred redesigned class skill trees across the game and expanded customization. Its patch notes dated September 30, 2026 include class-specific fixes, so class behavior and build advice can change over time. Treat tier lists and leveling recommendations as claims for a particular season and patch, not timeless answers to which class is best.
For build and leveling detail, Blizzard points players to community guide publishers including Maxroll, Icy Veins, Wowhead, PureDiablo, Mobalytics, and D4Builds. Check that a guide matches your current season and patch before following its recommendations.
