dicryptosys.dll Load Error: Restore the CryptoSys Dependency

dicryptosys.dll is normally the Windows filename for diCryptoSys.dll, the native core DLL used by the third-party CryptoSys API. It is not a Windows system file, and the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the application that installed CryptoSys API.

Do not begin by downloading an isolated DLL from a random download site. A replacement can be malicious, built for the wrong architecture, from the wrong CryptoSys release, or unable to fix the application’s missing installation files.

What dicryptosys.dll belongs to

CryptoSys API is a cryptography developer toolkit from D.I. Management Services Pty Limited. Its interfaces include .NET, C/C++, VBA, Python, and ActiveX components. The native diCryptoSys.dll file is compiled separately for Win32 and x64 applications.

Windows filenames are case-insensitive, so an error showing dicryptosys.dll generally refers to the vendor’s documented diCryptoSys.dll.

Question Accurate answer
Is it a Windows component? No. It belongs to CryptoSys API or software that bundles or uses CryptoSys API.
Is it part of .NET, DirectX, or Visual C++? No. Those products do not normally provide this DLL.
Where should it be? In the application’s DLL search path, normally installed by the owning program.
Are there 32-bit and 64-bit versions? Yes. The calling application must use the compatible build.
Should it be registered? No. The core diCryptoSys.dll cannot be registered with regsvr32.
Who should provide it? The original application vendor or the official CryptoSys API installer.

The vendor’s installer may place core files in Windows system directories and supporting files under C:Program FilesCryptoSys or C:Program Files (x86)CryptoSys, depending on the package and platform. Do not copy files into those directories manually unless the application’s deployment instructions specifically require it.

Fix 1: Identify and repair the application that needs the DLL

The application showing the error is usually the best clue. Windows may display the dialog, but the dependent program is the one requesting diCryptoSys.dll.

If the error appears when opening a particular business tool, Office file, Python program, old VB6 application, or developer project, start with that program. Do not assume that a game or a particular Windows release installed the file without evidence.

  1. Close the application displaying the error.
  2. Open Settings from the Start menu.
  3. Select Apps, then Installed apps.
  4. Search for CryptoSys, CryptoSys API, or the name of the application that fails.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside the program.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  7. Select Repair and allow Windows to complete the process.
  8. Restart Windows and test the application.

If there is no Repair option:

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Select the affected program.
  3. Choose Uninstall.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Download the application again from its developer or organization.
  6. If the program uses CryptoSys API directly, obtain CryptoSys API from the official CryptoSys source. Licensed developers should use their Developer Edition rather than substituting a trial package.
  7. Run the installer as an administrator by right-clicking it and selecting Run as administrator.
  8. Open the application again.

You can also use the older Control Panel path:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter appwiz.cpl and select OK.
  3. Select CryptoSys API or the parent application.
  4. Choose Change, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides.

A successful repair normally means the application starts without the DLL dialog. If the same error returns immediately, continue with the architecture and search-path checks below rather than copying another file over the existing one.

Fix 2: Check whether antivirus software quarantined it

Security software can remove or quarantine a legitimate application file. A quarantine event does not automatically prove that the detection was wrong, so verify the file before restoring it.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review recent events for diCryptoSys.dll or dicryptosys.dll.
  5. Open the event and note the detected path, threat name, and action taken.
  6. Confirm that the path belongs to the CryptoSys installation or the known parent application.
  7. Check the file’s publisher and signature if a copy remains on disk.
  8. If the file is confirmed as authentic, use the available Restore or Allow on device action.
  9. Reinstall the parent application if the file is no longer available.

Before restoring a quarantined file, right-click a surviving copy if available, choose Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab. The publisher should correspond to D.I. Management Services or the trusted software distributor. Also compare the file with the integrity information published by the CryptoSys vendor.

If the file came from a temporary folder, an unknown download, a crack, or an unofficial application bundle, do not restore it blindly. Remove the untrusted program and run a full Windows Security scan.

Microsoft notes that Defender may detect a restored quarantined file again. If that happens, follow the detection details and reinstall the program from its authentic installer instead of repeatedly restoring the same file.

Fix 3: Resolve a 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch

A DLL can exist on the computer and still fail to load. The most important architecture error is:

An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format.
(Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007000B)

This usually means a 64-bit process is trying to load a 32-bit DLL, or a 32-bit process is trying to load a 64-bit DLL.

On 64-bit Windows, the normal directory convention is:

  • C:WindowsSystem32 contains 64-bit system DLLs.
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64 contains 32-bit system DLLs.

The names are confusing, but do not swap files between these directories manually. The application installer should select the correct CryptoSys build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To check the application architecture:

  1. Start the affected application if possible.
  2. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  3. Select Details.
  4. Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns.
  5. Enable Platform, if your Windows version provides that column.
  6. Check whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit.

For a 32-bit application, reinstall the Win32-compatible CryptoSys package. For a 64-bit application, install the x64-compatible package. A 64-bit Windows installation does not mean that every application needs the x64 DLL.

For .NET applications, check the project target:

  1. Open the project in its development environment.
  2. Open the project’s build or platform settings.
  3. Check whether it targets x86, x64, or Any CPU.
  4. Make the target compatible with the native CryptoSys DLL supplied by the application.
  5. Rebuild the project and test it from the intended output directory.

The CryptoSys documentation recommends Any CPU for its documented .NET scenario, but an application that explicitly depends on a particular native architecture may require a matching x86 or x64 target. If you are unsure, use the architecture of the executable and the package supplied by the application developer.

Fix 4: Check the DLL search path

A loader error can say “module could not be found” even when the file exists. The application may simply be looking in a different directory.

A documented .NET error looks like this:

Unhandled Exception: System.DllNotFoundException:
Unable to load DLL 'diCryptoSys.dll':
The specified module could not be found.
(Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007E)

Check the following locations without moving anything:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Search the application’s installation folder for diCryptoSys.dll.
  3. Check C:Program FilesCryptoSys.
  4. Check C:Program Files (x86)CryptoSys.
  5. If the application is portable, inspect the folder containing its executable.
  6. If it is a .NET project, inspect the build output folder used when launching the program.
  7. Note whether more than one copy exists.

If the application has its own repair function, use it to restore the expected directory structure. A duplicate copy in an old application folder may also cause the program to load an obsolete release. Reinstalling the exact parent application usually resolves that conflict.

Do not add random directories to the system PATH and do not copy a DLL into System32 merely because an online guide recommends it. The correct location is the one expected by the application’s installer and loader.

Fix 5: Verify the file’s authenticity and condition

If the file is present but the program still fails, inspect it.

  1. Right-click the DLL.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Check the General tab for an Unblock option. If the file came from a trusted source and Windows marks it as blocked, select Unblock, then Apply.
  4. Open Digital Signatures.
  5. Select the signature and choose Details.
  6. Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature.
  7. Review the file location and creation details on the Details tab.

The CryptoSys vendor publishes signature, hash, and historical integrity information. Its pages contain different version labels and file-version values, so do not treat a filename or a single displayed version number as proof that two files are interchangeable.

If the signature is missing or invalid, the file is in an unexpected directory, or its hash does not match the trusted package, uninstall the responsible program and reinstall it from the official source. Do not attempt to make an untrusted copy work by registering it or changing permissions.

Fix 6: Repair the application’s Windows dependencies

CryptoSys API is independent of the Microsoft Cryptographic API and generally requires only standard Windows libraries. Installing Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, or .NET will not normally recreate this vendor DLL.

However, if Windows itself has broader corruption symptoms, repair the component store and protected system files.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the affected application again.

DISM and SFC repair Windows components and protected Windows files. They will not normally recreate diCryptoSys.dll, because CryptoSys is not part of Windows. If both commands report that Windows is healthy but the application still fails, return to the CryptoSys or parent-application reinstall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repeating SFC and DISM without checking the owning application rarely helps. Outbyte PC Repair can show what automated repair checks find, while the full version performs its repair actions; reinstalling the application that owns CryptoSys remains the definitive fix for this DLL.

Fix 7: Update or reinstall related drivers only when evidence points there

Drivers are not a primary cause of a missing CryptoSys DLL. Do not reinstall graphics, chipset, or storage drivers simply because this filename appears in an error.

Consider a driver check only when the application’s documentation connects the failure to a recent device or operating system change, or when Device Manager shows a separate hardware problem.

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the device category related to the application.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Review the provider, date, and version.
  8. Use Update Driver only when a suitable driver is available from the device manufacturer.
  9. Restart Windows and retest the application.

If a recent driver update clearly triggered the problem, use Roll Back Driver where available. If Device Manager reports no problem and reinstalling CryptoSys fixes the application, leave the drivers alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manually hunting through hardware manufacturers, checking architectures, and deciding which of many installed drivers is stale can take longer than the DLL repair itself. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers, with driver installation handled by the full version; use it only as an optional convenience, not as a substitute for reinstalling CryptoSys or the affected application.

Fix 8: Use System Restore after a clearly timed software change

System Restore is a secondary option when the failure began immediately after an application installation, update, cleanup operation, or other system change and the original installer is unavailable.

  4. Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
  5. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  6. Review the applications and drivers that may be changed.
  7. Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.

System Restore reverts applications, settings, and system state to the selected point. Changes made afterward may be lost. It is not the preferred repair when you can reinstall the application that supplied CryptoSys.

What not to do

Do not download a standalone DLL

Random DLL download sites can provide malware, an altered file, an incompatible release, or the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit build. Matching the filename is not enough to establish compatibility or authenticity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the official CryptoSys API download page or the original application developer’s installer. The current CryptoSys product page provides Trial Edition packages, while licensed developers should obtain the Developer Edition appropriate to their license.

Do not run regsvr32 on the core DLL

The core diCryptoSys.dll is not a COM registration DLL. Running commands such as these is not a valid repair:

regsvr32 dicryptosys.dll
regsvr32 diCryptoSys.dll

The separate diCryptOCX.dll ActiveX wrapper is different and may require registration in older applications. Only register that wrapper when the application’s own instructions require it, using the correct 32-bit or 64-bit regsvr32 utility. Direct VBA calls and declarations must also match the bitness of Office. The core CryptoSys DLL itself should be restored by installation, not registration.

Do not copy a random file into System32 or SysWOW64

This can create version conflicts, mask the real search-path problem, and expose Windows to an untrusted binary. Manual copying is appropriate only for a controlled developer redistribution using a vendor-supplied, licensed file and documented deployment instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If dicryptosys.dll still will not load

Work through this final checklist:

  1. Record the exact application name and complete error code.
  2. Check whether the message is a missing-file error such as 0x8007007E or an architecture error such as 0x8007000B.
  3. Confirm whether the calling process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  4. Search for duplicate copies of diCryptoSys.dll.
  5. Check Windows Security Protection history.
  6. Verify the publisher and digital signature.
  7. Repair or reinstall the parent application.
  8. Reinstall the correct CryptoSys package from its official source.
  9. If it is a .NET project, confirm the native DLL is in the process search path and that the platform target is compatible.
  10. Contact the application vendor if the program still loads an obsolete bundled copy.

The correct end state is a trusted CryptoSys DLL installed by the application that needs it, in the location and architecture that application expects.

FAQ

Is dicryptosys.dll malware?

Not inherently. dicryptosys.dll normally refers to the legitimate diCryptoSys.dll core component of CryptoSys API. Verify its path, digital signature, and integrity before restoring or allowing it. A copy found in an unrelated temporary, crack, or unofficial download directory deserves additional scrutiny.

Is dicryptosys.dll included with Windows 10 or Windows 11?

No. It is a third-party application file, not a Windows component. Windows Update, SFC, and DISM will not normally supply it.

Which program installed dicryptosys.dll?

The file belongs to CryptoSys API or to an application that uses or bundles CryptoSys API. The program named in the error is the best starting point. Check Installed apps and the application’s installation folder rather than guessing from the filename.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I fix it by installing Visual C++?

Usually not. CryptoSys API is documented as independent of the Microsoft Cryptographic API and generally uses standard Windows libraries. Install runtimes only when the specific parent application separately requires them.

Why does the file exist but Windows still say it is missing?

The file may be outside the application’s DLL search path, the wrong architecture, blocked, damaged, inaccessible, or missing another dependency. A .NET loader message saying “The specified module could not be found” does not prove that the named file itself is absent.

Should I use the 32-bit or 64-bit version?

Use the version matching the application process, not merely the version of Windows. A 32-bit application generally needs the Win32 CryptoSys build, while a 64-bit application needs x64.

Will registering dicryptosys.dll fix the error?

No. The CryptoSys core DLL cannot be registered with regsvr32. Registration may apply to the separate ActiveX wrapper diCryptOCX.dll in specific older deployments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the safest fix?

Repair or reinstall the application that installed CryptoSys API, using its official installer. If the application is licensed developer software, obtain the correct Developer Edition package from the CryptoSys vendor rather than using an isolated DLL download.
