Did 40 New World Players Protest a Server Shutdown—and Did It Work?

Amazon reversed a planned New World AP Southeast world merge after community feedback, but the official announcement does not verify the protest’s reported 40-person turnout or say it alone drove the decision.

Amazon Games did reverse a planned New World: Aeternum world merge after considering community feedback, leaving one world in AP Southeast. Community posts reported a protest, and a circulated headline said 40 people attended, but Amazon did not confirm that headcount or say the protest alone caused the change. The July 2025 dispute concerned regional world consolidation—not a plan to shut down the entire game.

What was New World planning to shut down?

Amazon Games’ July 22, 2025 plan was to merge worlds to concentrate players and improve population, matchmaking, and activity. In AP Southeast, the proposed plan would consolidate Cerberus and Crux into Delos. That was a change to the regional world lineup, not an announcement that New World: Aeternum as a whole was closing. Amazon’s world-merge announcement set out the plan.

World consolidation can make it easier to find other players for multiplayer content, but it can also affect latency, performance, queues, and players’ connection to a familiar world. Amazon identified those considerations; its announcement did not publish measurements comparing their effects.

What changed after players objected?

On July 23, Amazon updated the plan after considering community feedback. It said it would retain one world in AP Southeast and one in SA East, rather than carry out the planned reductions there. The company cited queue times, opportunities to join multiplayer content, latency, and performance as factors in its decision. The official post confirms the revised outcome and acknowledges community feedback, but does not specify how much any individual protest influenced it.

Did 40 people really attend the protest?

The figure comes from the circulated headline, not an official attendance count. A July 24 r/gamingnews post repeated the headline’s claim, while a separate r/newworldgame post shared a picture under the title “Pic from tonight Ap Server shut down protest.” These are community posts, not independently verified counts.

The careful conclusion is that players reported a protest and the headline put attendance at 40. Amazon’s announcement does not verify that number, and it attributes the revision to community feedback broadly rather than to the protest alone.

So, did the protest work?

In the narrow sense that the planned AP Southeast consolidation was revised and one world remained, the outcome matched what opponents of the change wanted. But the evidence supports saying Amazon changed its plan after considering community feedback—not that 40 protesters by themselves secured the reversal. The company did not isolate the protest’s role from other feedback or explain its relative weight.

What happened to New World after the 2025 dispute?

The regional change did not save the game permanently. On October 28, 2025, Amazon said Season 10 and the Nighthaven update would be New World’s final content release, while it intended to keep servers operating through 2026. Amazon’s update described that content plan.
