As of IGN’s December 11, 2025 report, the answer was uncertain: three filenames containing “40k” had been spotted in a Creative Assembly showcase video, but they did not confirm that the studio’s upcoming Total War reveal was a Warhammer 40,000 game. Creative Assembly had confirmed a new Total War announcement at The Game Awards; the game’s identity remained unknown.
What did the viewer spot?
IGN reported that Reddit user Knavbot noticed three filenames while watching Creative Assembly’s recent showcase livestream—the same event where the studio announced Total War: Medieval III. The files appeared during a discussion of the developer’s new engine, at roughly 32:42 in the video, and were difficult to see.

The names suggest assets associated with “40k,” which led viewers to connect them to Warhammer 40,000. But the report did not establish what the assets depicted or prove that they belonged to the game Creative Assembly planned to reveal.
What was confirmed—and what was speculation?
According to IGN’s report, updated December 11, 2025, Creative Assembly had confirmed that a new Total War game would be announced at The Game Awards. The Warhammer 40,000 connection was an inference from the filenames and existing rumors, not an announcement from the studio.

IGN’s Wesley Yin-Poole, identified as the outlet’s Director of News, cautioned: “But until the game is announced, we should point out that the Total War reveal at The Game Awards could be something else entirely.”
Did the filenames confirm console versions?
No. IGN noted that Creative Assembly’s new engine was intended to help bring its games to consoles for the first time. It speculated that a Warhammer 40,000 Total War game might come to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, but those platforms were not confirmed for the rumored title.

Why did viewers take the filenames seriously?
IGN pointed to a separate incident involving Dawn of War 4, in which developer King Art Games reportedly told the outlet that information revealed through filenames in a video had been accidental. That precedent helps explain why viewers scrutinized the Creative Assembly footage; it does not establish that these particular filenames were a deliberate or accurate leak.

The evidence made Warhammer 40,000 a plausible guess, not a settled identification. The confirmed point was that a new Total War reveal was imminent. The three filenames alone could not establish the game’s identity, its platforms, or any release details.
