There is no public evidence in the sources reviewed that AI created the reported PS5 exploit Relapse or caused a surge in jailbreak activity. Ars Technica reported in September 2026 that Relapse works on PS5 firmware up to version 13.6, but that report does not establish AI involvement or quantify a surge. AI-assisted vulnerability discovery is plausible in general; that is not proof it happened here.
What is the reported PS5 exploit?
Ars Technica reported in September 2026 that Relapse works on PS5 system software through version 13.6. This is a compatibility claim attributed to that report, not an independently established account of every exploit stage or proof that other firmware versions are affected. Ars Technica’s report

Firmware compatibility means the reported exploit is associated with particular system software versions. It does not, by itself, establish that every console on those versions is vulnerable in the same way, that a complete jailbreak is available to every user, or that the exploit is easy or safe to use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDid AI find the PS5 jailbreak?
That remains unverified. The reporting about Relapse establishes a reported exploit and firmware range; it does not identify AI as the source, development method, or a material contributor. The available sources also provide no event-specific statistic demonstrating an increase in PS5 jailbreak activity, so “surge” should be treated as a headline framing rather than a measured trend.

There is a relevant distinction between general capability and case-specific attribution. OpenAI said on September 1, 2026, that its Astra model can, with appropriate tools and access, find previously unknown security flaws and develop exploits across protected systems. That vendor statement makes AI-assisted security research plausible in general, but does not show Astra—or any AI system—was used to discover or develop Relapse. OpenAI’s “Path to Astra”
A technical paper on the PS5 security landscape published by Hardwear.io in April 2026 is relevant background, but the indexed text available for review did not return a match for “AI” or “artificial intelligence.” That absence is not proof that the complete paper or other reporting contains no discussion of AI. What is established—and what is not
| Question | What the sources establish | What they do not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Which firmware? | Ars Technica reported in September 2026 that Relapse works up to PS5 firmware 13.6. | Broader compatibility, exploit stages, or a guarantee that every console on those versions can be jailbroken. |
| Was AI involved? | OpenAI described general AI cyber capabilities in a September 1, 2026, vendor post. | That AI discovered, developed, or materially enabled Relapse. |
| Was there a surge? | The cited reporting describes a reported exploit development. | A count, rate, or other measurement demonstrating increased PS5 jailbreak activity. |
What does Sony say about security and disclosure?
Sony says it accepts product vulnerability reports, works to address reported issues responsibly, and operates a PlayStation Bug Bounty Program. These describe Sony’s general security and disclosure process; they do not establish that Relapse’s researchers reported this exploit through the program. Sony’s PS5 System Software Licence Agreement page for Iceland says users may not use tools to bypass, disable, or circumvent PS5 encryption, security, or authentication mechanisms. It also says system updates may include security patches and may prevent unauthorized or pirated content or unauthorized hardware or software use. Because this is the Iceland-region agreement, it should not be read as jurisdiction-independent legal advice; consult the terms that apply to your region. How to read future claims about AI and console exploits
- Look for case-specific attribution. A credible account should identify what AI system was used and what role it played, rather than cite general model capability.
- Separate compatibility from impact. A reported firmware range is not a measure of how many consoles are affected or how widely an exploit is being used.
- Ask what “surge” measures. Without a stated count, timeframe, or comparable baseline, the word does not quantify a trend.
- Distinguish discovery from assistance. AI might help analyze code or develop an exploit without being the original discoverer; those are different claims requiring different evidence.
