Sony has not officially announced the next-generation console or confirmed the reported supplier decision, so the account is not proof of the PS6’s specifications, release timing or features.
What Reuters reported about the PlayStation 6 chip
In a September 16, 2024 report, Reuters said AMD won the competition after Sony narrowed the field to AMD and Intel by 2022. The report relied on three people familiar with the events. It described a prospective contract covering chip design and manufacturing arrangements; it was not a public announcement from Sony.
Reuters also reported that Broadcom and other chip companies were involved earlier in the process. It said Intel and AMD became the final contenders, and that a disagreement over expected per-chip profit contributed to the failure to settle terms with Intel. How did Intel lose the Sony PlayStation business?
Reuters’ account points to two reported issues: the commercial terms and continuity with the existing AMD relationship. The report said Intel’s expected per-chip profit was a point of disagreement during negotiations. It also said backward compatibility was a concern in considering a move away from AMD, which supplies the PS5 chip. The reporting does not establish that either factor alone decided the outcome.

Intel did not publicly confirm the particulars. An Intel spokesperson told Reuters: “We strongly disagree with this characterization but are not going to comment about any current or potential customer conversations.” That response disputes the characterization without confirming or denying a specific deal detail.
What AMD’s selection does—and does not—tell players
AMD has prior console-chip experience
AMD’s 2024 annual report says the company developed the semi-custom SoCs that power PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S and X. That history helps explain why AMD is a plausible supplier for another console generation, but it does not verify a PS6 chip design or any technical details. AMD’s 2024 annual report.

Compatibility was a reported concern, not a feature announcement
Reuters said backward compatibility was discussed as a concern in switching from AMD to Intel. That is evidence about the reported supplier deliberations, not a promise that a future PlayStation will play PS5 games. It also says nothing definitive about PS4 or earlier-generation game support.
The report does not establish PS6 specifications or timing
The supplier account does not provide a confirmed release date, price, performance level, manufacturing node, chip configuration or current development milestone. It also does not show that Sony has publicly acknowledged a console called PlayStation 6. “In development” in the headline can only be understood in the limited sense that Reuters described a 2022 decision process for a chip intended for a forthcoming PlayStation.

How large was the reported Intel opportunity?
Reuters said Intel’s internal projections put the potential deal at around $30 billion, according to two of its sources. That figure is a reported projection—not realized revenue, a finalized contract value or an independently verified estimate. It describes the scale of the opportunity Intel may have expected, rather than the value of AMD’s reported agreement.
