Apple unveiled M3-family MacBook Pro models and an iMac; the prediction that gaming would be a major focus was pre-event speculation, not a confirmed promise.
What Apple announced at “Scary Fast”
Apple announced its online event for October 30, 2023, at 5 p.m. Pacific. The event’s name did not reveal what would be announced, and contemporary guesses about its focus were interpretations rather than confirmation. Ars Technica noted that Mac announcements were expected, while 9to5Mac read the Finder imagery on Apple’s event page as a clue to a Mac focus.
At the event, Apple introduced updated 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models and a 24-inch iMac, all with M3-family chips. MacRumors’ October 31 report card counted those three devices as the event’s announcements and said no other products were introduced during the 30-minute presentation.
Was the AAA Mac gaming rumor true?
Not as an announcement of a major gaming initiative. Before the event, MacRumors argued that high-end gaming might feature prominently, drawing together hardware, software and release-date clues. Its post-event report card characterized that emphasis as speculation. Apple did not announce a dedicated AAA gaming program at “Scary Fast,” and the purported Japanese developer tie-in cited in the rumor did not materialize, according to that report.

Why the gaming prediction seemed plausible
M3 graphics features
MacRumors expected the M3 family to include hardware-accelerated ray tracing, which can help render graphics and might make Mac ports more attractive to developers. The M3 chips did include that feature. It was a graphics capability, however, not evidence that specific games or a broad slate of AAA titles had been confirmed for Mac.
Apple’s comments about developers
In an IGN interview, Apple vice president Tim Millet was quoted by MacRumors as saying that developers of iPhone 15 Pro games “are going to work with us to do it” when asked about bringing those games to Apple silicon Macs. That comment indicated interest in working with developers; it did not name titles or confirm particular Mac releases.

Game release dates near the event
Capcom had announced that Resident Evil Village would become available on iPhone 15 Pro and M1-or-newer iPads on October 30, the same day as the event. MacRumors noted that the date could be coincidental. The App Store listing then showed December 31 as a placeholder date for the Mac version of Resident Evil 4; the date could change and was not a confirmed event tie-in.
Game Mode and the Game Porting Toolkit
macOS Sonoma added Game Mode, which temporarily prioritizes CPU and GPU performance, lowers audio latency with AirPods, and reduces input latency with popular third-party controllers. At WWDC 2023, Apple also released the Game Porting Toolkit: an evaluation environment for developers to run existing, unmodified Windows games on Mac before writing porting code. Both were signs of Apple supporting Mac gaming workflows, but neither established a new gaming division, promised exclusives, or guaranteed compatibility for any individual game.

- Right, with limits: Apple had added Mac gaming features and discussed working with developers, giving observers reasons to watch for more gaming support.
- Not confirmed: AAA gaming was not announced as the event’s central initiative, and the reported Japanese developer tie-in was inaccurate according to MacRumors’ post-event report.
- Not established: The event coverage does not show that every AAA game would run on Mac, identify a confirmed slate of ports, or establish current compatibility or performance for any specific title.
