How Many CPU Cores Do You Need for Modern PC Games?

Six capable cores are a practical starting point for gaming, while eight can add headroom for demanding games and multitasking. The best choice depends on game-specific CPU benchmarks, frame-rate goals and the rest of your PC.

For a gaming-focused PC, six capable CPU cores are a sensible starting point; eight can offer more headroom for demanding games, streaming and other apps running alongside a game. Neither number is a universal requirement: the right processor depends on the games you play, the CPU’s per-core performance, your frame-rate target, graphics card, settings and other tasks.

Why core count alone does not determine game performance

A CPU’s cores help it handle work in parallel, but games do not all distribute their work in the same way. Game programming, processor architecture and clock speed all matter, as do resolution, graphics settings and whether the graphics card or CPU is limiting performance. Intel’s gaming CPU guide recommends evaluating the specific game and processor rather than choosing by core count alone.

There is no core count that guarantees a particular frame rate. Intel notes that the processor needed to maintain more than 60 FPS varies by game and recommends checking benchmarks. A faster CPU may not improve performance much if the graphics card is already the limiting component.

Six cores or eight: which should you choose?

Six cores

Six competent cores are a practical baseline for a gaming-focused build. They are not a minimum requirement established for every modern game; they are a reasonable starting point when comparing systems, provided the particular processor performs well in the games you play.

Eight cores

Eight cores can provide extra capacity for demanding games and for running a game alongside streaming, recording, voice chat or other applications. More cores are not automatically faster for gaming, though: a processor with a higher core count can lose to one with fewer cores in particular games.

For example, AMD’s Ryzen 7 5800X3D product and gaming-comparison page describes an 8-core CPU and compares it with the 24-core Intel Core i9-14900K. AMD says its testing was conducted in April 2026 and discloses a selection of games and test hardware and settings. That vendor-published comparison illustrates why core count alone is not a buying verdict; it does not establish that the 8-core processor is faster in every game or that AMD’s results are a universal finding.

Physical cores, threads and benchmark scores

Physical cores and threads are related but not interchangeable. A processor can expose more threads than it has physical cores, and a benchmark result described as an “8-thread” score does not mean a game needs eight physical cores.

The Steam description for 3DMark CPU Profile says modern DirectX 12 game performance usually correlates most closely with its 8-thread score, while older DirectX 9 games correlate more with its 2- or 4-thread scores. These are benchmark correlations, not a universal rule for game requirements or proof that every modern title uses eight threads effectively.

How to compare CPUs for the games you play

  1. List your actual workload. Include the games you play and whether you stream, record, use voice chat or keep other applications open while gaming.
  2. Set your target. Compare CPUs at the resolution and graphics settings you intend to use, and consider both average FPS and frame-time consistency.
  3. Look for game-specific CPU benchmarks. Prefer real gameplay or in-game tests for the processor models under consideration. Intel’s CPU benchmark guide recommends real-world testing and measuring FPS and frame times during normal play—and during a livestream if that is part of your use case. Synthetic multicore scores alone cannot predict how a particular game will run.
  4. Check the rest of the system. Compare GPU benchmarks too, and account for memory, cooling, motherboard and platform compatibility, and total cost. A CPU upgrade may not solve a performance limit caused by another component.

Why some games benefit from more cores

Individual games can behave differently. Intel’s explanation of CPU effects in games gives HITMAN 2 as one example: its CPU simulation settings label four cores “base,” six “better” and more than eight “best.” Those labels describe that game’s settings behavior, not a core-count requirement that applies to other titles.

That variation is why the useful question is not simply “How many cores do modern games need?” but “How does this CPU perform in my games, at my settings and with my other workloads?” Benchmarks matched to your use are more informative than a single core-count target.
