Destiny 2’s Steam player figures fell from August to September 2025, after the global launch of mobile spinoff Destiny: Rising. That timing does not prove Rising took players from Destiny 2: the available figures track concurrent users on Steam, while NetEase’s launch claims report download-chart rankings, not player totals or people switching games.
What happened after Destiny: Rising launched?
NetEase launched Destiny: Rising globally on iOS and Android on August 28, 2025. The publisher describes it as a free-to-play mobile sci-fi RPG in an alternate Destiny timeline. NetEase’s launch announcement gives the date and platform details.

In its Q3 2025 operational highlights, NetEase said Destiny: Rising topped iOS download charts in multiple Western markets during its global launch, and topped the chart in China following its October 16 domestic launch. Those are publisher-reported chart placements; they do not disclose how many people played the game, how many were Destiny 2 players, or how long anyone kept playing. NetEase’s Q3 2025 highlights do not provide a migration count.
Destiny 2’s Steam figures fell month to month
SteamCharts’ historical series shows lower average and peak concurrent-player counts for Destiny 2 on Steam in September 2025 than in August. The figures are estimates for simultaneous Steam users, not unique players, monthly active users, or the combined population across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. SteamCharts’ Destiny 2 history reports:

| Month | Average concurrent players | Monthly peak concurrent players |
|---|---|---|
| August 2025 | 34,574.73 | 74,961 |
| September 2025 | 19,307.38 | 54,297 |
The average was about 44% lower in September than August, and the monthly peak was about 28% lower. These percentages are calculations from SteamCharts’ reported monthly figures; they describe the change in this Steam series, not a decline in Destiny 2’s entire player base.
Do the figures show that Rising took players from Destiny 2?
No. They show that Destiny 2’s Steam concurrency was lower in September 2025 and that Destiny: Rising launched shortly beforehand. They do not show why Steam activity fell or whether people moved from one game to the other. A chart position for mobile downloads and a concurrent-user estimate for Steam measure different things, on different platforms, so they cannot be compared as if they were matching player counts.
To demonstrate that Rising caused a loss, evidence would need to connect the games directly—for example, reliable data showing Destiny 2 players stopped playing it and switched to Rising. The cited sources provide no such player-level migration measure, nor a directly comparable all-platform Destiny 2 total. The available evidence supports a coincident decline on Steam, not the claim that the mobile game “ate into” Destiny 2’s population.

Valve’s official Steam statistics page listed Destiny 2 among its current top games in a snapshot dated October 7, 2026. That confirms it appeared in that dated Steam ranking; it is not a population total or evidence of a stable trend across platforms. Steam’s statistics page is a changing snapshot, so its ranking should be read in that context.
