Did Doom Run on E. coli? What the Bacterial Display Project Actually Showed

A 2024 project modeled Doom images on a proposed fluorescent E. coli display. The game ran on a computer, and the bacterial screen was never demonstrated.

Doom did not actually run on E. coli or appear on a completed bacterial screen. Lauren “Ren” Ramlan’s 2024 synthetic-biology course project modeled how fluorescent bacteria might display a tiny, slow version of the game. Doom ran on an ordinary computer; the bacterial display was a concept, not an experiment that produced game images in living cells.

What was—and wasn’t—demonstrated

In April 2026, Nature corrected its earlier account, stating: “A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that Doom had been displayed on Escherichia coli bacteria.” The correction matters because headlines and retellings can make a modeled display sound like a working biological screen.

Ramlan describes the work in her project portfolio as a course project simulating how long it would take to run Doom with bacteria as the display system. In the project concept, E. coli would serve as glowing on/off pixels. The cells did not compute Doom, execute its game engine, or contain the game encoded in their DNA.

How the proposed bacterial display would work

A computer produced the game images

According to Ars Technica’s 2024 explanation, Doom ran on a standard computer. Its image frames were converted into 32-by-48, black-and-white bitmaps for the modeled display. The cells were proposed as a way to represent those pixels, not as the device running the game.

Fluorescence stood in for each pixel

The model envisioned a 32-by-48, one-bit grid of fluorescent E. coli: each position would be either lit or dark. A proposed chemical repressor-operator system would control cell fluorescence. MIT News summarized the concept as a 32-by-48 well-plate display with controlled fluorescence in its February 2024 media roundup. That description is of the proposed system, not evidence that such a screen was built and shown working.

Why the famous 599-year estimate appeared

The often-repeated timings are estimates from Ramlan’s model, reported by Ars Technica in 2024—not measurements from an operating bacterial display. The model’s slow response and reset cycle lead to the striking comparison with a conventional five-hour Doom playthrough.

Model figure What it describes
32 × 48 pixels The proposed one-bit display grid, described by Ars Technica and MIT News in 2024.
70 minutes Estimated time to reach peak display output in Ramlan’s model, as reported by Ars Technica in 2024.
8 hours, 20 minutes Estimated time for a glowing E. coli cell to return approximately to its starting state, as reported by Ars Technica in 2024.
About 0.00003 frames per second The approximate modeled frame rate reported by Ars Technica in 2024.
599 years Estimated time to complete a five-hour Doom run at that modeled rate, reported by Ars Technica and Popular Science in 2024.

The 599-year figure is a way to convey the model’s extreme slowness. It does not mean anyone ran Doom on bacteria for centuries, or that a bacterial Doom display achieved that frame rate.

Why choose Doom and E. coli?

In a March 2024 interview with The Tech, Ramlan said the idea drew on the internet trend of trying to run Doom on unusual devices. She described E. coli as a familiar model organism with a widely characterized genetic toolkit—not as uniquely suited to biological displays.

Ramlan also discussed quenching as a possible way to make cells return to a dark state faster. She described trying the approach in a lab as future work; the cited accounts do not establish that a working bacterial display was later completed. As she put it in the interview, “Bacterial displays, or cellular displays in general, are this really intriguing way for humans to interface with the world of microorganisms.”

So, can E. coli run Doom?

Not in the sense the headline suggests. The project modeled a possible biological display in which fluorescent cells could represent pixels, while an ordinary computer ran the game. Its contribution was exploring the idea and estimating how slowly such a display might respond—not demonstrating playable Doom inside bacteria.
