Bethesda’s DOOM + DOOM II combines the original games and their listed expansions with a new episode, cross-platform multiplayer, community mods, and modern performance and accessibility options. If you already own a digital copy of DOOM or DOOM II on one of the platforms Bethesda names, the enhanced release is a free update; the offer is for eligible digital owners, not documented physical copies.
What comes with DOOM + DOOM II?
The 2024 release brings the base games together with a substantial set of campaigns and extras. Bethesda lists these included titles and content in its release notes:
- DOOM and DOOM II
- Master Levels for DOOM II
- TNT: Evilution and The Plutonia Experiment
- No Rest for the Living and SIGIL
- Legacy of Rust, a new episode
- A new Deathmatch map pack
The new pack adds 25 Deathmatch maps to the 18 already included, for 43 total, according to Bethesda. Nintendo UK’s regional listing separately reports 187 mission maps and 43 Deathmatch maps overall; the 187 figure is Nintendo’s listing detail, not a total extrapolated from Bethesda’s notes.
What is new in Legacy of Rust?
Legacy of Rust is the release’s main new campaign. Bethesda’s product page describes 16 maps divided between two episodes, The Vulcan Abyss and Counterfeit Eden, with eight maps in each. It was developed collaboratively by contributors from id Software, Nightdive Studios, and MachineGames; that credit does not mean every member of each studio worked on it.

The episode adds new demons and weapons. Bethesda calls it “the first official episode since DOOM II to feature new demons and weapons.” The rerelease also includes the id Vault, which Bethesda says contains concept art, development footage, early weapon and item versions, and playable levels from the original game’s development.
How have multiplayer, mods, and music changed?
Online and local multiplayer
Online co-op and Deathmatch support cross-platform play for up to 16 players, according to Bethesda’s release notes and product page. A Bethesda account is required for online play. Locally, the release supports four-player split-screen on all platforms; eight-player split-screen is listed for PC and Xbox Series X|S.

- Developed by id Software, and originally released in 1993 and 1994, the definitive, newly enhanced versions of DOOM + DOOM II are available as a combined product. Includes Sigil & Sigil II
Subscription requirements depend on platform and region. Nintendo UK’s listing says online modes require a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership; that Switch-specific note should not be assumed to describe other platforms.
Community mods
An in-game browser lets players download community-created mods on all platforms. Bethesda’s product page says publishing your own single-player mods is a PC feature. That does not establish unrestricted user-created multiplayer mods.

Players can switch between the original MIDI soundtracks and modern IDKFA arrangements by Andrew Hulshult. Bethesda says the enhanced selection includes new DOOM II recordings, so players can keep the classic sound or choose the newer arrangements.
What performance and accessibility options are listed?
Bethesda states a target of 60 frames per second at 1080p on all platforms, and up to 120 frames per second at 4K on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PS5. These are publisher specifications, not independent performance-test results; the higher resolution and frame rate depend on supported hardware and display.

The release adds options including input mapping, high-contrast text, and audio settings. Bethesda’s notes also list eight added translations. Nintendo’s UK store page has its own regional language listing, which may not match availability in other storefronts. Bethesda’s product page lists PC requirements, including Windows 10 64-bit, 8 GB RAM, and at least 2 GB of free storage, with broadband required for online play. Check the live store page for current requirements before purchasing, since platform listings can change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do existing owners have to buy it again?
No, if you own an eligible digital copy. Bethesda Support says digital owners of DOOM or DOOM II on Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, or GOG receive the enhanced release as a free update. Bethesda’s upgrade FAQ describes digital-owner eligibility; it does not promise the update for physical copies.

Can you still play the older PC releases?
Bethesda says Steam users can opt into the “previous-re-release” beta, while GOG and certain Microsoft Store or Game Pass owners can access old builds through their libraries. The same FAQ notes that saves from original PC versions are not compatible with the enhanced release. That save warning is stated for PC; it should not be generalized to other platforms.
Is Bethesda’s “definitive” label an independent verdict?
No. Bethesda describes DOOM + DOOM II as “the definitive, newly enhanced versions” in its own promotional release notes. The concrete additions are the bundled campaigns, Legacy of Rust, expanded Deathmatch maps, cross-platform online play, the mod browser, soundtrack choices, and updated options. The performance figures above are also publisher specifications rather than independent testing.
