Gamers accused Elon Musk of getting help to progress in Diablo IV and Path of Exile 2 after his livestreamed play drew scrutiny. The footage prompted questions about whether the character’s progress matched his apparent familiarity with game mechanics; it did not establish who had played the account. The Guardian later reported that a private exchange appeared to show Musk acknowledging account boosting. That report is not the same as an independently verified account of who played, what help was provided, or whether either publisher took action.
What happened?
The controversy grew in stages. Musk had made high-ranking gaming claims involving Diablo IV and Path of Exile 2. When viewers watched his Path of Exile 2 gameplay, some experienced players and commentators said his apparent difficulty with basic mechanics seemed inconsistent with the progress of the character he was using. They suspected that another person had played or advanced the account.

Those observations became accusations of account boosting. The Washington Post’s January 29, 2025 investigation described the public claims, livestreamed play and critics’ interpretations. The stream was a catalyst for scrutiny, not proof of who had controlled the account at other times or how it had progressed.
The Guardian reported on January 22, 2025, that a private exchange appeared to show Musk acknowledging account boosting. The outlet’s headline itself used the qualification “appears to show.” The Guardian reproduced a message attributed to Musk that included the phrase, “It’s impossible to beat players in Asia if you don’t, as they do!” The exchange is a reported development, not an independently authenticated finding here.

What evidence did gamers cite?
Critics compared two things: a character that appeared highly progressed and gameplay they interpreted as showing limited familiarity with basic mechanics. That mismatch raised questions, but the interpretation depends on what viewers could see in the stream; it does not identify who played the account earlier or establish how the character gained its progress.
- Livestream footage: Directly showed the gameplay viewers scrutinized, but could not establish who had played the account outside the broadcast.
- Character progress: Could prompt questions about how the account was advanced, but level, equipment or leaderboard standing alone does not prove account sharing, payment or another player’s involvement.
- Reported private exchange: The Guardian’s account of the exchange is the strongest later development in the reporting, but it should be described as the outlet’s report of an apparent acknowledgment—not as a publisher-confirmed finding.
Did Musk admit to account boosting?
The Guardian reported that a private exchange showed Musk acknowledging account boosting. That is the careful way to state the development: it is an acknowledgment as reported by the outlet, whose headline says the transcript “appears to show” an admission. The available reporting does not independently settle every detail of the exchange or establish exactly who played, what assistance occurred, or whether money changed hands.

What does account boosting mean, and is it against the game rules?
“Boosting” is used broadly for help that advances a player’s account or character. It can involve another person playing on an account, paid progression services or other assistance; those are not interchangeable claims. Whether conduct violates a game’s terms depends on the specific conduct and the rules that apply.
Blizzard’s rules for Diablo IV
Blizzard’s current End User License Agreement says, “You may not share your Account or Login Information with anyone, unless the terms of this Agreement allow it.” The agreement also prohibits providing in-game services—including account boosting or power-leveling—in exchange for payment. These are Blizzard’s published terms, not proof that any particular action occurred on Musk’s account or that Blizzard made a finding about him. Read the Blizzard End User License Agreement.

Path of Exile 2 and enforcement
Blizzard’s agreement applies to Blizzard’s platform and should not be treated as a statement of Path of Exile 2 policy. No current Grinding Gear Games policy or official statement about this case is established by the cited reporting. Nor do the cited sources establish that Blizzard or Grinding Gear Games suspended Musk or otherwise took enforcement action.

The reporting supports that gamers accused Musk, that gameplay prompted criticism, and that The Guardian later described a private exchange as appearing to show an acknowledgment. It does not turn the stream into proof of account control, establish every detail behind the reported exchange, or document an official decision by either publisher. Keep those distinctions in view when describing the controversy.
