At 78, Aberdeen streamer Cath Bowie is Guinness World Records’ oldest female Fortnite streamer on Twitch—not the oldest gamer or streamer overall. Known online as grumpygran1948, she found an audience by playing the game she loves and chatting with the people who watch.
What record did Cath Bowie set?
Guinness World Records recognized Bowie as the oldest female Fortnite streamer on Twitch. The category is specific: it does not establish that she is the oldest gamer, the oldest streamer of any kind, or the oldest person to play Fortnite. Guinness published its profile on 24 September 2026, when Bowie was 78; she turned 78 on 1 September 2026. Guinness World Records’ profile and STV News’ local report describe the record in those terms.
Guinness reported that Bowie had more than 24,000 Twitch followers in September 2026. That is a dated snapshot, not a live count. Guinness also said she regularly streams for hours at a time.
How did she become a Fortnite streamer?
Bowie first became curious about Fortnite after watching her grandson play in 2017. She tried it on his console, created her own account in 2018 and later began streaming. Her granddaughter suggested the name grumpygran1948 as a joke; Bowie says she is not actually grumpy. STV reports that she eventually bought her own console.

Her grandson initially doubted that people would watch his grandmother play. Bowie recalled his reaction to Guinness: “As a young guy he just couldn’t believe that his grandma would do such a thing and suggested that nobody would join me or watch me,” She said that challenge spurred her on: “Saying that was like a red rag to a bull to me. I would show him that I could do it. 24,000+ followers later and he doesn’t mention it. I wonder why?”
Why does she keep playing?
For Bowie, the appeal is not simply a win-or-lose result. She sets goals and challenges herself, but says she plays to enjoy Fortnite and connect with her viewers. “I have never been disappointed with my performance. I do it for me and to chat with my lovely supporters,” she told Guinness.
She has tried other games, but Fortnite remains the one that excites her most. “Although I have tried several other games I have never found the excitement that I get from Fortnite. I call myself a ‘Fortniter’ more than a gamer.” Her interest in the people around the game is just as clear in her comments to STV News: “I love the community. I love talking to people. I chat all the time, and I just love the whole atmosphere,”
Guinness quoted Bowie reflecting on her years with the game: “Nearly nine years later I am still playing it, still absolutely loving it and although still growing older I have never made my age a deterrent.”

Can you start gaming or streaming when you’re older?
Bowie’s experience offers an encouraging answer: age alone need not be a reason to rule it out. She began with a game her grandson was playing, then made an account and eventually started streaming. Her message to people considering a first step is direct: “NEVER let age stop you. If I can do it so can you.”
Her record is one person’s story, not evidence that older players all have the same experience or that age has no practical effect on gaming. A 2026 exploratory article in the International Journal of Ageing and Later Life examines older women’s video-game streaming through a case study of Uruguayan streamer Aqumadre. It discusses varied streamers and platforms, but is not a statistical census and does not study Bowie. It provides context for a growing range of older women’s streaming practices, not a measure of how common they are.
