Yes—Gacha Life’s former player-to-player chat was reportedly removed in a 2020 update. That date and the reported PC, Android and iOS scope come from a community-maintained Lunime Wiki, not an official removal notice. Current store listings still describe chatting with NPCs in Life Mode, which is a different feature.
What “chat” means in Gacha Life now
Gacha Life uses “chat” to describe two different kinds of interaction. Its current store descriptions refer to conversations with non-player characters (NPCs)—characters controlled by the game. They do not establish that players can message one another.
Google Play describes Life Mode this way: “Discover new NPCs and chat with them to learn more about their lives!” Google Play’s Gacha Life listing also describes character customization, Studio and Skit Maker, mini-games, gifts and offline play. Apple’s App Store listing likewise describes NPC conversations and offline play.
When was player chat removed?
The community-maintained Lunime Wiki’s Chat page reports that the online player-to-player chat option was removed in a 2020 update across PC, Android and iOS. The wiki is not an official Lunime source, so treat the date and platform scope as community documentation rather than a confirmed company announcement.

A separate Lunime Wiki page about removed content also characterizes the former feature as online and level-gated. That historical feature is distinct from the NPC dialogue described in today’s store listings.
Why was player-to-player chat removed?
Lunime’s current store descriptions do not give a reason. Its privacy policy, effective October 29, 2018, also does not explain the removal. No official rationale is established by these sources, so claims that it was removed for safety, moderation or another specific reason should not be presented as fact.

What can you do in Gacha Life instead?
The current Google Play and Apple App Store descriptions present Gacha Life as a character-creation and offline play experience. They describe making characters, using Studio or Skit Maker, exploring Life Mode, speaking with NPCs and playing mini-games. Google Play showed an update date of August 15, 2023 when reviewed; store descriptions do not guarantee identical behavior across every version or region.
If you can talk to characters in Life Mode but cannot message another player, those are not contradictory: NPC dialogue is part of the currently described game, while the older online player-to-player option is reported as removed.
