Yes—Hollow Knight: Silksong’s September 4, 2025 launch caused major storefront disruption. Steam recorded a sudden surge of more than 11,000 reported problems after the 10 a.m. Eastern release, while players reported purchase and download failures on Nintendo eShop and other stores. PlayStation Store access and listing availability were also delayed or disrupted, although the evidence does not show that every PlayStation region experienced a complete storefront crash.
When did Hollow Knight: Silksong release?
Hollow Knight: Silksong launched digitally on September 4, 2025, for PC and consoles. Steam’s official listing gives that release date and lists the game and its soundtrack as digital products.
Why did the storefronts fail?
A rush of players tried to authenticate, buy and download the game at the same time. Circana analyst Mat Piscatella’s launch-week data, reported by GamesRadar, put Silksong’s Steam peak at 587,150 concurrent players. That scale of demand created pressure across storefront services rather than indicating a fault with one specific copy of the game.
What happened on each storefront?
| Storefront | What was documented | How to describe it accurately |
|---|---|---|
| Steam | DownDetector reports cited by Ars Technica rose above 11,000 after the 10 a.m. Eastern launch. | Documented outage or severe service disruption affecting access and transactions. |
| Nintendo eShop | Players and major-news reports described access, purchasing and downloading problems during the rush. | Severe eShop disruption; the exact duration varied by region and service. |
| PlayStation Store | Reports described disruption, while Ars Technica found the PlayStation listing unavailable during its September 4 coverage. GamesRadar later said the shop was relatively intact but the listing arrived hours late. | Delayed or disrupted listing and access—not proof of a universal, full PlayStation Store crash. |
| Microsoft Store | The Guardian included Microsoft Store among the major storefronts affected during the launch period. | Reported launch-period disruption, with no single recovery time established here. |
Was Steam actually down?
Steam was not necessarily unreachable for every user, but it suffered a clear, measurable incident. The more than 11,000 DownDetector problem reports cited by Ars Technica represent a sharp reporting spike, not a count of every failed transaction or player. The concurrent-player peak helps explain why browsing, authentication, purchasing and downloads could fail or time out under load.

Did Nintendo eShop crash?
Nintendo eShop experienced the clearest console-store disruption alongside Steam. Reports during launch described players having trouble opening the shop, completing purchases or starting downloads. Those symptoms can occur independently: a store may load while checkout fails, or a successful purchase may be followed by a stalled download.
What about the PlayStation Store?
“PlayStation Store crashed” is too broad without a region and timestamp. Contemporary coverage conflicted: one report found Silksong’s listing unavailable, while later coverage described the shop as mostly functioning and characterized the problem as a listing delay. The safest conclusion is that PlayStation access or product availability was disrupted during launch, not that the entire service failed everywhere.

Did Team Cherry confirm the crashes?
Yes. In its holiday 2025 retrospective, Team Cherry wrote: “It’s a truly staggering number of players, more than we could have ever expected (enough to crash all of the storefronts!).” That is the developer’s broad characterization of the launch impact; it does not establish identical failures or identical downtime on each platform.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you buy or download Silksong now?
The launch-period outages were temporary service and listing problems, not an indication that Silksong was permanently unavailable. Silksong and its soundtrack were distributed digitally through the listed platform stores. If a store is currently failing, check the platform’s service-status page, confirm you are signed into the account that owns the purchase, and retry the download after the store recovers. Do not buy a second copy while a transaction is pending; first check your order history or library.
