A 2021 experiment showed that seated VR users can report a stronger sensation of walking when visual motion, a visible avatar and timed vibrations under the feet are combined. The setup created an illusion of walking—not actual leg movement, restored mobility or a clinically proven treatment.
How the seated VR walking illusion works
The system pairs three cues:
- Optic flow: the virtual scene moves as though the user is traveling forward.
- Self-avatar: users see a body whose movements and viewpoint establish a sense of having legs in the scene.
- Footstep-like vibration: actuators buzz beneath the ball and heel of each foot in time with virtual steps.
Together, these cues give the brain visual, body-ownership and contact information that normally accompanies walking. The vibration does not propel the seated user or reproduce the full mechanical experience of a real stride.
What the prototype contained
The peer-reviewed study, published in Frontiers in Virtual Reality on 21 April 2021, tested a custom apparatus rather than a consumer product. A secondary account describes two spring-mounted foot platforms, each with two vibro-transducers—one under the forefoot and one under the heel. The springs helped isolate the vibration to the platforms, while headphones masked actuator noise and let participants hear virtual footsteps. The study itself is available at Frontiers in Virtual Reality; the apparatus description and estimate were reported by New Atlas.
What participants actually felt
The researchers ran two experiments with 20 participants each. Experiment 1 included 19 men and one woman; Experiment 2 included only men, and participants were young adults. The outcomes were questionnaire-based sensations, not measurements showing that participants physically walked.

First-person full-body avatars performed best
A full-body avatar viewed from a first-person perspective increased reported sensations of walking, leg action and telepresence compared with the no-avatar condition. A hands-and-feet avatar also improved walking sensation and telepresence, but less strongly than the full-body version.
Third-person viewing was not an equivalent substitute
Showing the full body from a third-person viewpoint did not improve walking or leg-action sensation in the reported conditions. It also reduced reported self-motion and telepresence. Avatar visibility therefore mattered less than how the body was presented relative to the user’s viewpoint.

Timing the buzz mattered
Synchronous or rhythmic foot vibrations increased reported self-motion, walking, leg-action and telepresence across avatar conditions. This supports vibration as a reinforcing cue when coordinated with the visual and avatar events; it does not show that vibration by itself recreates natural walking.
Can you feel walking in VR while sitting down?
Yes, in the limited sense measured by this experiment: seated participants reported an increased subjective feeling of walking. The experience is sensory and perceptual. Users remain seated, do not take steps and do not receive evidence of improved balance, strength, gait or mobility.

Could it help wheelchair users?
Toyohashi University of Technology presented seated virtual walking as a possible experience for people with walking disabilities. That is a research motivation, not a validated intervention. The cited work does not establish testing with wheelchair users, rehabilitation outcomes, safety, accessibility across different conditions or therapeutic benefit. The university’s release explains the proposed application at Toyohashi University of Technology.
How this compares with other VR locomotion ideas
| Approach | What the user does | Where feedback comes from | What this evidence supports |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foot-vibration prototype | Sits still | Two foot platforms, avatar and visual motion | Stronger subjective walking and presence under tested conditions |
| Physical walking systems | Moves legs or walks on hardware | Mechanical motion plus visual cues | Not evaluated by this study |
| Commercial haptic footwear | Depends on the product and application | Wearable foot actuators and, in some products, motion sensors | Separate from the tested prototype |
The comparison is important: the study demonstrates sensory cues and seated operation, not a general locomotion platform or a functional mobility device.

Is the device available to buy?
Not as the tested system. The apparatus was custom-built and was not presented as a packaged retail product. Matsuda estimated in the 2021 New Atlas report that a proposed configuration using four vibro-transducers and amplifiers could cost $300–$500. That is a dated prototype estimate, not a current price, completed build list or proof that compatible parts can be assembled without engineering work. He said, “We believe that low cost and miniaturization can be accomplished.”
Makers may find generic vibrotactile transducers through component suppliers or marketplace searches, but compatibility depends on drive requirements, mounting, amplification, control timing and isolation. A generic actuator is not automatically a working VR-footstep system.
Best Value

- Universal compatibility: 1/4 set screw for vive tracker 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, Ultimate tracker and tundra tracker,
- One year warranty from the date of purchase.
Cerevo’s Taclim is a separate vendor product line describing haptic VR shoes, motion sensors and a Unity plugin SDK. Its existence should not be treated as evidence that the Toyohashi prototype is sold, nor as confirmation of current price or availability.
What later research adds
A related 2021 study explored seated virtual walking using 360-degree video and foot vibrations. Toyohashi University reported that rhythmic vibration improved walking-related sensations and perception of ground materials, even when the vibration did not match the scene. That work points to a broader research direction, but it is separate from the self-avatar experiment described here and does not establish clinical effectiveness.
What the findings do—and do not—show
- Shown: coordinated visual motion, avatar presentation and foot vibration can increase reported walking-related sensations for seated users.
- Shown: first-person full-body presentation and rhythmic vibration were especially useful in the tested conditions.
- Not shown: actual walking, restored mobility, rehabilitation benefit, medical safety or long-term effects.
- Not shown: that results generalize to wheelchair users, older adults or people with different disabilities, given the small and demographically narrow samples.
The Bottom Line
Foot-buzzing VR works by adding a precisely timed contact cue to visual motion and an embodied avatar. The 2021 study supports a more convincing seated walking illusion, but it remains a small laboratory demonstration—not a commercial walking rig or a proven therapy.
