No verifiable source currently identifies the rule Matthew Mercer supposedly revealed. An indexed listing for a Polygon article dated July 17, 2026, says the story concerns professional Dungeon Masters’ styles and narrative approaches, but its accessible excerpt does not state Mercer’s rule or provide a quotation. It would be inaccurate to present any particular tip as Mercer’s advice.
There is still solid guidance for a Dungeon Master who wants a dependable foundation. The D&D Sage Advice Compendium assigns the DM final authority over rules questions and describes rules as tools for organizing and inspiring play. A 1983 Dungeons & Dragons Dungeon Masters Rulebook separately names fairness as its most important rule. Those are useful principles, but neither source proves what Mercer said.

What the Matthew Mercer story actually confirms
The indexed headline says that Critical Role’s Matthew Mercer revealed one foundational rule for all Dungeon Masters. The listing attributes the article to Polygon writer Aimee Hart and dates it July 17, 2026. Its accessible copy frames the subject as an interest in how professional DMs run games and shape narratives.

That excerpt does not include the alleged rule, a direct quotation, a paraphrase detailed enough to identify it, or a link to a primary Mercer statement. The original article page was not available in the material reviewed. Consequently, there is no reliable basis for saying Mercer’s rule was “be fair,” “the DM has final say,” “yes, and,” or any other familiar piece of Dungeon Master advice.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That distinction matters because a general D&D principle can be sound without being Mercer’s statement. Treating a rule from an official compendium or an older rulebook as Mercer’s quote would turn useful context into a false attribution.

The official D&D foundation: the DM adjudicates play
The DM has the final say on rules questions
The Sage Advice Compendium states: “The DM always has the final say on rules questions.” This is an official rules-reference statement, not a Matthew Mercer quotation. In practical terms, it means the DM must decide how a rule applies when the text is unclear, two provisions appear to conflict, or a situation falls outside what the rules describe.
Final authority is a responsibility rather than a license to change outcomes arbitrarily. Players need to know that a ruling will be made, that the DM can explain the reasoning, and that the same standard will be applied when a similar situation occurs later.

The compendium explains that no ruleset can reasonably account for every possible circumstance. A tabletop game combines open-ended player choices with fictional situations that designers cannot enumerate in advance. The DM therefore acts as a bridge between cases the rules address and cases they do not.

When a character attempts an action that has no exact procedure, the DM can decide what ability, difficulty, consequence or timing best fits the fiction and the group’s expectations. The decision should keep the game moving while remaining understandable to the people affected by it.
Use RAW, RAI and RAF together
The compendium distinguishes three common ways of thinking about a rule:
- Rules as written (RAW): what the published text literally says.
- Rules as intended (RAI): the design purpose or outcome the rule appears meant to produce.
- Rules as fun (RAF): the option that best supports an enjoyable game for the group in that moment.
The compendium recommends a healthy mix rather than insisting that one approach answer every question. RAW is a useful starting point, but literal wording can produce an absurd result in an unusual situation. RAI can clarify the purpose of a rule, while RAF reminds the DM that the game is a shared activity, not a legal examination. The compendium remains a guide; it does not replace the DM’s adjudication.

What the 1983 rulebook says
The 1983 Dungeons & Dragons Dungeon Masters Rulebook contains a section titled “The Most Important Rule.” Its instruction is blunt: “BE FAIR.” It elaborates that “A Dungeon Master must not take sides,” should not favor monsters over characters or characters over monsters, and should apply optional rules evenly.

This is a clear historical statement about table conduct. It does not say that every creature must receive identical treatment in the fiction; an intelligent villain can cheat, ambush or exploit a weakness. Fairness means that the DM is not secretly changing standards to reward a preferred player, punish a disliked character or force a predetermined story outcome.
Why the edition label matters
The book is from 1983. Its wording belongs to that publication and its era, so it should not be presented as the current D&D ruleset. It is valuable as historical DM advice and as a concise explanation of impartial refereeing, but it does not verify the unidentified Mercer rule.
How to apply these principles in a real session
You can use the official adjudication guidance and the historical fairness rule without claiming either came from Mercer. The following process keeps rulings quick, visible and consistent.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Identify the decision. State what needs to be resolved: a spell interaction, an improvised action, movement timing, a monster ability or an unclear condition.
- Check the text you actually use. Read the relevant rule aloud or summarize it accurately. If the group uses house rules, note that the house rule controls for this campaign.
- Choose the lens. Start with RAW. If literal application defeats the apparent purpose, consider RAI. If both options are defensible, choose the outcome that preserves the group’s fun without giving one participant a private advantage.
- Make a temporary ruling when needed. Say, “For this encounter, we’ll handle it this way; I’ll verify the wording after the session.” A prompt decision is usually better than stopping play for an extended debate.
- Explain the consequence. Tell players what the ruling means for the action in front of them. They do not need a lecture on every possible future case.
- Apply the same standard later. Record unusual rulings in campaign notes. If a comparable situation occurs, use the same interpretation unless the group openly agrees to change it.
- Review genuine mistakes. If a ruling was based on a misread rule or produced an unacceptable result, acknowledge it and decide whether to retcon, leave the result in place, or adopt a correction from the next scene onward.
What fairness looks like at the table
Do not play favorites
Favoritism can be obvious, such as granting one player repeated exceptions, or subtle, such as allowing a favored character to interrupt scenes while requiring everyone else to wait. A fair DM gives each player a meaningful opportunity to contribute and explains exceptions in terms that could apply to anyone in the same circumstances.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Do not favor the monsters either
Fairness does not mean making encounters easy. Enemies can use intelligent tactics, exploit terrain and retreat when that makes sense. The unfair practice is changing an enemy’s capabilities after the players have committed to a plan, adding an unannounced immunity, or interpreting the same rule differently solely to ensure a monster wins.
Apply optional rules evenly
If the campaign uses an optional rule, establish who it affects and when it applies. A rule that grants a benefit to player characters should not quietly disappear when an NPC would receive the same benefit. Conversely, a restriction imposed on characters should not be ignored for allies or villains without an announced reason.
Separate a ruling from a secret plot
A DM may keep an enemy’s motives, hidden locations or future events secret. That is ordinary information management, not unfair adjudication. The distinction is whether the underlying game procedure is consistent. Players can accept an unknown answer more readily when they trust that the answer will not be altered merely to protect a planned twist.
A practical RAW–RAI–RAF decision framework
When a dispute arises, ask these questions in order:

- What does the text say? Quote the operative sentence and identify any defined terms.
- What problem is the rule solving? Consider the result the mechanic appears designed to produce, especially when literal wording creates an implausible edge case.
- What keeps the table engaged? Choose an outcome that preserves meaningful choices and avoids turning a minor ambiguity into a prolonged argument.
- Will this ruling be predictable? Tell the group whether the decision is campaign policy, a one-scene exception or a temporary ruling pending review.
This framework does not eliminate disagreement. It gives the DM a transparent way to resolve it and gives players a reason to trust that the decision is not being made for a private preference.
How to verify the Mercer claim before repeating it
Anyone seeking the specific rule from the headline should check the complete Polygon article rather than relying on an indexed snippet. Look for a direct quotation, a clearly attributed paraphrase and the surrounding context. A social post, fan summary or unattributed video can repeat a claim without establishing what Mercer actually said.
A primary Mercer interview, appearance or published statement would be stronger evidence than a headline alone. Until one of those sources identifies the rule, describe the claim as unverified and keep the official compendium guidance and 1983 fairness advice clearly labeled as separate sources.

For an aspiring DM, the lack of a confirmed quote does not leave you without direction. You can begin with the responsibilities D&D itself assigns to the DM: adjudicate uncertain situations, balance written rules with intent and fun, and make decisions fairly. Those principles stand on their own, regardless of what the unavailable article may ultimately reveal.
