Nintendo stopped making new Game Boy-family handhelds and moved on to the Nintendo DS generation. The company’s official history records the Game Boy Advance family—including the Game Boy Micro—as the end of the line, but does not give one final production date for every model and market.
When did Nintendo move on from the Game Boy?
Nintendo’s official timeline traces the line from the original Game Boy, introduced in Japan in 1989, through Game Boy Color in 1998 and Game Boy Advance in 2001. The Advance launched in Japan on March 21, 2001, in the United States on June 11, and across Europe on June 22, according to Nintendo’s company history. The family continued with Game Boy Advance SP in 2003 and Game Boy Micro in 2005. Nintendo’s timeline places the Nintendo DS in 2004, followed by DS Lite in 2006. The DS marked the next handheld line, rather than a new Game Boy model. The dates and model history are recorded in Nintendo’s official timeline.
Nintendo’s current support list treats Game Boy systems as legacy hardware. Its official sources do not establish a single final manufacturing date covering every Game Boy model and region, so a precise universal “last year” is not confirmed.
#1 Best Overall
- It features a more powerful processor than any previous portable system, for faster, smoother gameplay
- The high-resolution, full color screen makes the game jump out at you -- 50% bigger than Game Boy Color
- Two new buttons, L & R, bring you more control & game options
- Extended battery life lets you play for up to 15 hours on a pair of AA batteries
- Compact Game Paks let you store your game progress & are smaller then Game Boy Color Paks
Can you still play Game Boy games?
Yes, provided you have compatible hardware and a working cartridge. Nintendo lists original Game Boy Game Paks as compatible with the original Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Advance SP, and Super Game Boy. Game Boy Advance games, by contrast, are designed for Game Boy Advance and Game Boy Advance SP and do not run on other Game Boy models. Check the cartridge generation and exact system model before buying or recommending a console. See Nintendo’s compatibility guidance.
Do not assume every Nintendo DS model plays every Game Boy generation: the DS’s backward compatibility was for Game Boy Advance titles, not original Game Boy or Game Boy Color cartridges. The compatibility details depend on the particular hardware model; verify the model against Nintendo’s guidance before purchase.
What Nintendo’s sales figures say
Nintendo’s 2006 annual report gave cumulative worldwide hardware sales, as of March 31, 2006, of 118.7 million units for the Game Boy line and 75.1 million for the Game Boy Advance family. Nintendo said the latter total combined Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Advance SP, and Game Boy Micro. These are historical cumulative figures reported at that date, not current sales totals.

Game Boy systems are pre-owned legacy hardware rather than products Nintendo currently makes. When considering a used console, confirm the specific model supports the cartridges you own, and check its condition, battery and power source, and the seller’s return terms. Nintendo also says licensed gaming accessories and peripherals display the Official Nintendo Licensed Product Seal; it warns that unlicensed products have not undergone its evaluation and may have compatibility problems.
