OceanGate’s Titan submersible used a handheld wireless, game-style controller as the pilot’s input device. The controller sent commands to Titan’s main control computer, which then operated the thrusters and other systems.
That was unconventional, but the final investigations did not identify the controller as the cause of Titan’s June 18, 2023 implosion. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) instead attributed the disaster primarily to OceanGate’s inadequate engineering process, damage to the carbon-fiber pressure vessel, insufficient testing, flawed damage monitoring, and the decision to continue operating the vessel.

The controller was real, but it was not the submarine’s brain
Public reporting widely identified Titan’s controller as a Logitech F710 wireless gamepad. The official Canadian Transportation Safety Board (TSB) report uses the more cautious description “handheld wireless controller” and does not, in the cited technical section, name the retail model.
That distinction matters. Titan was not a toy submarine whose motors were directly connected to a console gamepad. The pilot’s commands passed through a control system:

Pilot’s hands → wireless controller → main control computer → thrusters and other systems
The controller was therefore closer to a steering wheel, joystick, or aircraft control input than to the vehicle’s complete navigation and safety system. It did not withstand the pressure of the deep ocean, protect the occupants, monitor the carbon-fiber hull, or independently decide how Titan should respond to an emergency.
The TSB says Titan’s main control computer interfaced with the handheld wireless controller. The computer controlled the vehicle’s thrusters, internal and external lights, ballast bladder, drop-weight system, cameras, GPS, laser scanner, and communications and tracking systems. Titan also used forward, underside, and aft cameras, along with sonar and a Doppler velocity logger, to support navigation.

Why use a game-style controller at all?
A consumer-origin controller is not automatically a foolish choice. Engineers sometimes use commercially available components because they offer mature ergonomics, familiar controls, computer compatibility, and low-cost replaceability.
- Familiar layout: analog sticks and buttons can provide multiple proportional and discrete inputs in a compact package.
- Small footprint: Titan’s cabin was highly constrained, so a handheld interface was practical from a space perspective.
- Availability: A widely sold controller can be easier to replace than a bespoke control panel.
- Rapid development: Commercial hardware can simplify prototyping compared with designing every control from scratch.
- Low training burden: Familiar physical controls may be easier for an operator to learn, though game familiarity is not the same as professional piloting experience.
Those are legitimate engineering considerations, not proof of OceanGate’s specific reasoning. Claims that the controller was selected solely because it was cheap, or that it cost exactly $30 and was purchased immediately before a mission, should not be treated as established facts without a primary document or testimony supporting them.
When can consumer hardware be acceptable?
The relevant question is not “Is it a game controller?” The relevant question is whether the complete control chain is suitable for a safety-critical vehicle.
A controller could be defensible in that role if engineers demonstrated that the controller, receiver, computer, software, power supply, command mapping, and thruster interfaces worked predictably under realistic conditions. That would normally require attention to:
- connection reliability and behavior after a wireless dropout;
- electromagnetic interference and radio performance;
- temperature, vibration, moisture, condensation, and salt exposure;
- software, drivers, version control, and command validation;
- protection against dropped hardware and accidental button presses;
- clear fault indications for both the operator and support crew;
- safe behavior if an input sticks, reverses, freezes, or sends corrupted data;
- independent or redundant emergency controls;
- maintenance, replacement, and component traceability;
- pilot training, simulator testing, and human-factors evaluation; and
- formal hazard analysis, such as failure-mode and effects analysis or fault-tree analysis.
None of those safeguards can be inferred merely from the fact that a gamepad was present. Nor should the absence of a custom control panel be treated as proof that every relevant safeguard was missing. The official reports’ central findings concern the vehicle’s pressure vessel and OceanGate’s engineering and safety-management decisions, not the retail identity of the handheld controller.

The risks were in the whole control chain
A consumer controller can introduce potential failure modes, especially when it is used for propulsion or maneuvering:

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Controller failure: The pilot may lose steering or thrust input even if the main computer continues operating.
- Receiver failure: The controller may appear normal while its commands fail to reach the computer.
- Pairing or radio problems: Wireless links can experience interference, dropouts, or connection loss.
- Battery or power failure: The controller, receiver, computer, or thruster system may lose power.
- Software failure: Drivers or interface software can delay, remap, freeze, or reject commands.
- Stuck input: A continuous thrust command can be more dangerous than a complete loss of input.
- Human error: An operator’s familiarity with game controls does not establish that the mapping, feedback, or procedures are appropriate for a submersible.
- Insufficient redundancy: If one input path is essential and unverified, a small component can become a single point of failure.
But even a serious failure in that chain would not explain a pressure hull collapsing under enormous external pressure. A controller can affect where a vehicle goes; it does not, by itself, determine whether the vehicle’s pressure vessel can survive the dive.
What the investigations say caused Titan’s implosion
The NTSB’s final report, issued October 2, 2025, identified OceanGate’s inadequate engineering process as the probable cause. Its findings describe a carbon-fiber pressure vessel that likely developed delaminations after dive 80, sustained additional damage after dive 82, and then failed during the Titanic wreck dive through local buckling and implosion.
The NTSB said OceanGate did not perform sufficient testing, including cycle-life evaluation. It also found that the company’s analysis of strain-gauge and acoustic-emission data failed to recognize that the pressure vessel had been damaged and should have been removed from service.
The NTSB’s probable-cause finding centers on the inadequate engineering process, continued operation of a damaged pressure vessel, regulatory shortcomings, and flawed monitoring analysis. It does not identify the game controller as the cause.

The U.S. Coast Guard’s 2025 Marine Board of Investigation likewise described the disaster as preventable and focused on design, certification, maintenance, testing, operational practices, emergency planning, and oversight. Its conclusions do not turn the controller into the central technical explanation.

The gamepad became a symbol of OceanGate’s unconventional, cost-conscious, rapid-development approach. That symbolism is understandable: a passenger-carrying vehicle descending to the Titanic wreck makes a consumer game controller look startlingly informal.
But symbolism is not causation. The critical questions were whether OceanGate had properly designed and built the pressure vessel, validated it over repeated dives, inspected it after damage, interpreted monitoring data correctly, maintained it, planned for emergencies, and operated it within an adequate oversight framework.
The NTSB also found that Titan was a U.S. vessel carrying passengers for hire but was not registered or documented in the United States and was not inspected by the Coast Guard. The regulatory circumstances were complex, and they should not be reduced to the claim that OceanGate simply avoided regulation by calling Titan experimental.

These documented failures are far more consequential than whether the pilot held a commercial gamepad or a custom-built control yoke.
Would a custom control panel have prevented the accident?
There is no evidence in the NTSB’s probable-cause finding that replacing the controller with a custom panel would have prevented Titan’s implosion. A custom interface might offer better guards, labeling, environmental qualification, lifecycle control, or redundancy. It might also introduce its own hardware, software, and human-factors problems.
“Custom” is not synonymous with “safe,” just as “commercial” is not synonymous with “unsafe.” The safety case depends on verification of the entire system and on disciplined engineering processes.

So was the controller fit to pilot Titan?
The answer depends on what “fit” means:
- As a human-interface device: Possibly. A game-style controller can provide useful analog inputs and buttons in a compact form.
- As a safety-critical marine component: Only if the complete controller and control architecture were qualified, tested, monitored, and backed by appropriate failure handling and redundancy.
- As evidence of overall engineering quality: The choice was a warning sign to many observers, but it is not, by itself, proof that the vehicle was unsafe or proof of the cause of the implosion.
The strongest accurate conclusion is that Titan’s controller was unusual, not that its use alone was reckless. The official investigations found the disaster was rooted in pressure-vessel engineering, testing, damage assessment, oversight, and operational decisions. The controller was a visible detail in that story—but not the proven trigger.
