Did Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted Use AI Upscaling? What the Leak and Released Game Show

PopCap denied generative AI use in Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted, but the separate AI-upscaling allegation remains unresolved. Here’s what leaked images and launch coverage can—and cannot—prove about the released game.

Short answer: PopCap said generative AI was not used in Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted. That statement does not settle the separate player allegation that some artwork was AI-upscaled. Leaked pre-release images fueled the dispute, but the available coverage does not establish that every image in the leak appeared in the released game.

What did PopCap say about AI?

On October 21, 2025, two days before the listed release, PopCap published its “Rooted Together: A Note About PvZ Replanted” announcement on Steam. It said: “We’ve also seen some speculation about the use of generative AI, which is not used in PvZ Replanted.”

The word generative matters. PopCap denied using generative AI; the statement did not give an asset-by-asset account of how the game’s art was produced or directly resolve the narrower allegation that AI-based upscaling was used. Discussion under the announcement included players asking what had been upscaled and whether any such images were placeholders or intended for release. Those comments show that the question remained contentious, not that the allegation was proven.

What did the leak establish—and what did it not?

Images from a pre-release build circulated amid criticism that some art looked poorly upscaled. PC Gamer’s October 24, 2025 report covered the launch-era backlash and the allegations about the artwork. But neither the leaked images nor the complaints independently establish which production method PopCap used, or that every disputed image made it into the retail game.

Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted Standard - PC EA App [Online Game Code]
  • Experience the original Plants vs. Zombies game fully remastered in stunning HD graphics
  • Fend off waves of Zombies in the original lane-based defense mode, now with added bonus levels and new content!
  • Team up with a friend in local co-op mode to defend the backyard together, now with 100% more BUTTER!
  • Battle head-to-head in local PvP mode by taking control of the Zombies
  • Relive classic minigames like Wall-Nut Bowling - now with HD polish and even more chaotic fun!

A pre-release build can include unfinished assets or bugs. The sources available do not provide a complete comparison of leaked images against the released game, so it is not possible to make a reliable image-by-image claim about what shipped.

How does the released game look?

In a review first published in December 2025, TechRadar described the higher-resolution presentation as cleaner in some respects, but said it flattened some of the original’s bold outlines and shadows. The reviewer also noted inconsistencies between seed packets and the plants placed in the game. That is a criticism of the visual result, not proof of an AI workflow: an image can look less appealing to a player without revealing how it was made.

The review covered the PC version after roughly five hours of play across a desktop and Steam Deck. It is one reviewer’s assessment, not a controlled technical comparison. The reviewer said patches appeared to address some bugs during the review period, but that does not establish the status of every issue today.

Are the leak-era problems still in the game?

Not all complaints about the launch build were about art. PC Gamer’s launch report also noted complaints about missing dynamic music and online multiplayer. Those were launch-era criticisms; they should not be treated as evidence about every later update or as proof of what the game currently supports.
