Highguard players did report stuttering, hitching, frame drops and blurry visuals, so performance was a genuine complaint. But the available evidence does not show that poor optimization was largely to blame for the game’s negative Steam reviews: players also criticized map scale, pacing, mining, readability and broader design, and no representative analysis assigns how much each issue contributed.
What players said about Highguard’s performance
Steam reviews include individual reports of stutters, hitches and frame drops. One reviewer described those problems on a system with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D, RTX 5070 and 64 GB of RAM; other reviewers said performance fell short of what they expected from the visuals or the listed requirements. These are player accounts, not controlled tests, and they cannot establish how common the problems were or how the game performed across different hardware configurations. Steam community reviews
Highguard’s official support guidance recommends an SSD because it helps load large levels quickly. The support page treats poor performance as a separate issue with multiple possible causes and says optimization is ongoing. Its SSD advice is about loading; it does not establish that an SSD will fix stuttering or low frame rates.
Performance was not the only criticism
The Steam review examples also raise concerns about maps feeling too large for 3v3, slow or tedious mining and looting, pacing, unclear presentation and the game’s broader design. Those examples demonstrate that players were discussing more than technical performance, but they do not show which complaint was most prevalent across all reviews. Steam community reviews

- Unstoppable Power – Equipped with the Intel Core Ultra 7 265F processor, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 GPU, 16GB DDR5 RAM, and 1TB SSD PCIe 4.0 storage for seamless gaming and multitasking.
- Optimized Thermals – Stay cool with a quad-fan system, while dust filters and efficient airflow ensure long-term reliability.
- Advanced Connectivity – Game without lag with 2.5Gbps Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6, and versatile ports. Dolby Atmos audio and AI noise cancellation enhance sound and communication.
- Ready for Upgrades – Designed with tool-less access, easily swap out components, ensuring future-proof performance for years to come.
That distinction matters when interpreting the headline claim. A player can encounter performance trouble and still dislike the match structure, or leave a negative review primarily because the game’s pacing or design did not work for them. The available reviews do not sort those causes or measure their relative weight.
What launch-period review and player figures show
PCGamesN reported that 78% of players who had spent more than five hours in Highguard on opening day had left a positive review; the outlet said the share rose to 85% over the first week. Those figures are PCGamesN’s analysis, and the inspected account does not describe a formal methodology. They offer launch-period context, but do not invalidate negative reviews or explain why other players reviewed the game negatively. PCGamesN, February 2, 2026

Bloomberg reported that Highguard reached nearly 100,000 concurrent players on Steam at launch and lost roughly 90% of its players over the following week. Its account also described criticism of large maps and mining, with player retention emerging as a major concern. Those reported figures indicate a sharp early decline in concurrent players; they do not establish that optimization caused the decline or the negative reviews. Bloomberg, February 26, 2026

The evidence supports a narrower conclusion than “poor optimization was largely to blame.” Performance complaints were real, but the examples are anecdotal; other cited complaints concern design and pacing; and the launch statistics provide context rather than a causal breakdown. The available sources do not provide a representative, controlled analysis that separates these factors or assigns each a share of the negative reviews.

So optimization may have contributed to some players’ dissatisfaction, but the evidence here cannot show that it was the leading cause of Highguard’s Steam reception. The negative reviews are better understood as a mix of reported technical problems and broader disagreements with the game’s experience, with the relative importance of each still unestablished.
