Project Zomboid saw a major launch-period resurgence after Build 42.20 reached the public Stable branch on July 29, 2026—but public player counts and Steam seller rankings do not prove that sales “exploded,” or that the update alone caused a sales increase. The available evidence points to heightened attention and strong Steam commercial visibility, not a verified number of copies sold or revenue.
What happened with Build 42?
The Indie Stone released Build 42.20 to the public Stable branch on July 29, 2026. The update brought substantial changes to Knox Country, including new and reworked locations, deeper crafting and building, animals and animal husbandry, improved lighting and atmosphere, expanded lore, and quality-of-life improvements.

The release was followed by continued patching. On September 28, the developer announced Build 42.21 Stable, after an Unstable testing period. Its notes include fixes for zombie duplication in multiplayer and zombies disappearing after players re-entered a world chunk, as well as an adjustment to tree cutaway behavior. The Indie Stone described Unstable testing followed by a Stable release as the intended procedure for future updates.

What the player numbers show
SteamCharts recorded an average of 76,861.26 concurrent players in August 2026, the month immediately after the Stable release. The monthly average fell to 54,454.20 in September, a 29.15% decrease from August. SteamCharts lists monthly peaks of 124,506 in August and 100,244 in September.
These are measures of people playing at the same time, not copies purchased. A high concurrent-player count is evidence of activity and attention, but it does not reveal how many players bought the game, how much they paid, or whether they already owned it. SteamCharts’ October 9 snapshot also showed 50,125 average concurrent players over the preceding 30 days; that rolling figure is not a sales total.
SteamCharts’ Project Zomboid statistics also need to be read by date and time window. PC Gamer reported a 79,552 concurrent-player peak on August 2, citing the record at that time. Later tracker snapshots show higher peaks, so those figures describe different moments rather than conflicting measurements of one event.
What Steam’s seller rankings add
SteamDB’s weekly global top-seller charts ranked games by revenue. Project Zomboid appeared at #20 for August 4–11 and #5 for August 25–September 1, according to the August 4–11 chart and the August 25–September 1 chart. Those placements show strong visibility in Steam’s revenue-ranked seller chart during the sampled weeks.
A rank is not a revenue amount or unit-sales count. The charts do not say how many copies Project Zomboid sold, how much revenue it earned, or how its results compared with a specific baseline. Together with the player figures, they support a careful conclusion: the game drew substantial player activity and seller-chart visibility around the Build 42 launch.
Why the original “last month” claim needs qualification
Build 42.20 arrived at the end of July, and the clearest public activity increase appears in August. September’s average concurrent-player count was lower than August’s. The evidence therefore supports a dated account of a launch-period resurgence; it does not substantiate a claim that sales exploded in September or that Build 42 caused a quantified sales increase.
The developer said the game’s price would rise alongside Build 42 Stable, but the available sources do not quantify the effect of that change on sales or revenue. A current price would also depend on storefront, country, and date, so a single universal figure would be misleading.
What returning players and server owners should know
The Indie Stone’s release notes say Build 41 remains available through the legacy41 beta channel. They also warn that saves from Build 42.19 Unstable are not compatible with Build 42.20. Players returning from an older build or managing a server should check the official Build 42.20 release notes and their server’s version before switching branches or attempting to use an existing save.
