Yes. Jeff Fowler worked on animation for the Shadow the Hedgehog game while he was at Blur. He told Past Present Feature that the work took place in 2004; the game itself is commonly identified by its 2005 release year. The distinction matters: Fowler’s reported work predates the game’s release.
What did Jeff Fowler do on the Shadow game?
GamesRadar+ reports that Fowler was part of the game’s CG Movie Production team. Fowler described doing animation on the project and said, “I had a blast working on the game and the cinematics.” That supports crediting him with animation work on its cinematic material, not with creating all of the game’s CGI or directing every cutscene.
The game in question is Shadow the Hedgehog, the 2005 release. In a December 2024 interview, Fowler recalled working on it in 2004, during his time at Blur. In other words, “2005” identifies the game by its release year; it is not the year Fowler gave for his work.
Did Sonic the Hedgehog 3 reference the game’s cinematics?
Fowler told GamesRadar+ that the film incorporated moments from the game: “We built some of those moments [from Shadow the Hedgehog] into some of the sequences.” He also pointed to a direct visual callback: a camera move in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 references one from the game’s opening video. That makes the connection more specific than a general return to the character, while stopping short of suggesting that the film reproduces the game’s cinematics wholesale.

How the full-circle connection fits
Fowler directed Sonic the Hedgehog 3, according to ILM’s project page, which also identifies Keanu Reeves as Shadow’s voice performer. The same filmmaker who had animated material for Shadow’s game-era introduction later directed a film featuring the character and consciously echoed a shot from that earlier work.
That is the substantiated “full circle” story: Fowler’s reported role on the game’s CG Movie Production team, followed years later by his direction of the third Sonic film and the film’s acknowledgment of the game’s imagery. The available credits and interview accounts do not establish that he was the sole creator of the game’s CGI.
