Sony and Bungie disputed his claims and said he was terminated for cause. The lawsuit was reported settled in July 2026, but the settlement terms were not disclosed. No cited source establishes that a court found the firing was motivated by an effort to avoid payment.
What Barrett alleged
Barrett sued Bungie and Sony Interactive Entertainment, alleging defamation and breach of contract. He said his March 2024 firing was intended to prevent him from receiving amounts under retention agreements connected with Sony’s acquisition of Bungie. VGC described the alleged amount as more than $45 million. That was Barrett’s allegation, not a judicial finding that the money was owed or that avoiding payment motivated the firing. VGC’s report on the lawsuit.
What Sony and Bungie said
In their reproduced answer to the lawsuit, Sony and Bungie said Barrett’s employment was terminated for Cause in March 2024 and denied his allegations of wrongful termination and entitlement to the payments. That filing states the defendants’ position; it does not resolve the dispute or establish why the firing occurred. The reproduced answer.
What the $45 million figure refers to
The reproduced answer describes $45,579,627 as scheduled for Barrett from 2024 through 2026. The listed schedule comprises three unvested RSU installments of $941,529 each and three Re-Vested Shares installments, including Premium Bonus, of $14,251,680 each. These are figures described in the parties’ filing, not proof Barrett ultimately received or was entitled to those amounts. The reproduced answer; PC Gamer’s account of the payment breakdown.

The same answer says Sony announced its Bungie acquisition at a value of $3.6 billion and that it closed on July 15, 2022. That deal value is context for the acquisition-linked agreements, not the amount of Barrett’s lawsuit settlement. The reproduced answer.
The lawsuit was reported settled in July 2026
PC Gamer reported in July 2026 that the parties reached an agreement resolving the lawsuit. The report did not disclose the settlement terms, so it does not establish whether Barrett received money or, if so, how much. Barrett said, “The outcome is one I am very satisfied with.” PC Gamer’s settlement report.
