Capcom’s published account credits producer Shuhei Matsumoto and director Takayuki Nakayama with proposing a new direction for Street Fighter 6, but it does not say Matsumoto personally saved the franchise from dying. The game’s design choices and subsequent sales show a successful new chapter; they do not establish that the series was near death before development began.
What Capcom says Matsumoto did
Capcom’s 2023 integrated report says that roughly five years earlier, development team members Shuhei Matsumoto and Takayuki Nakayama submitted a concept proposal “filled with various ideas that turned the previous concept of Street Fighter on its head.” The report identifies Matsumoto as producer and Nakayama as director in its development material. It describes a team proposal and a creative shift—not a personal rescue by Matsumoto. Capcom’s development report

Capcom announced Street Fighter 6 was in production on February 21, 2022. The series had a long history by then: Capcom dates the original arcade game to 1987 and Street Fighter II to 1991. The announcement gives a franchise history and production news, but it does not characterize the series as dying or in imminent danger. Capcom’s production announcement
How Street Fighter 6 broadened the series’ approach
Modern Controls
Capcom describes Modern Control Type as an option for executing special attacks without complex button combinations. That gives players an alternative to the more demanding input approach associated with traditional fighting-game controls. It is an option within the game, not evidence that the game removed its technical depth or that all players should use it.
#1 Best Overall
- Classic Experience Built for a Modern Era: With all core gameplay modes present, plus two brand new modes and enhanced visuals, Street Fighter 6 redefines the classic fighting game genre.
- Distinct Fighting Styles to Master: 18 diverse characters including legendary World Warriors and exciting brand new characters add their own flair to the game at launch, with more to be added post-launch.
- Brand New Game Modes: The Street Fighter franchise continues to hone its skills and redefine the fighting genre with the introduction of three new foundational modes – Fighting Ground, World Tour and Battle Hub.
- In-Game Commentating: Street Fighter’s first-ever Real-Time Commentary Feature, supported with subtitles in 13 languages, incorporates the voices of popular Fighting Game Community (FGC) commentators like Vicious and Aru directly into the game to narrate what is happening on-screen just like a real tournament.
- Two New Control Schemes: Classic Controls returns alongside two brand new options: Modern Controls allow you to perform special attacks with simple button combinations and are designed for players who want to fight without memorizing and practicing special move button combinations first. Dynamic Controls only require a press of the Auto-Attack button to perform attacks and is a great control type to use when you have friends and family over for a quick, casual game.
Accessibility features
Capcom says accessibility features were strengthened in Street Fighter 6. Together, these features indicate an effort to make the game more approachable to a broader range of players. The cited material does not isolate the effect of Modern Controls or any accessibility feature on sales, so it would be inaccurate to say those changes caused the game’s commercial growth. What the sales figures establish
Capcom reported that Street Fighter 6 sold more than two million units worldwide in about one month after its June 2023 release. In June 2026, Capcom reported that cumulative worldwide sales had surpassed seven million units. These figures show substantial commercial growth over time, but sales success after launch cannot by itself prove that the franchise was dying before the game was made.
Rank #2
- Stunning visuals and an all new battle system depicts the world of Street Fighter with unprecedented detail.
- For the first time ever, SF6 provides an ever evolving immersive storytelling experience that gives power to the player to create their own World Warrior and truly engage in the Street Fighter Universe
- SF6 provides the gold standard fighting experience for both casual and battle-tested pros can enjoy for years to come.
- Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the international version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions. DLC content may not work unless using an EU Playstation account as stated this is an EU Import Region Free Version
The figures for the game and the whole series should not be conflated. Capcom’s February 2022 production announcement reported 47 million cumulative worldwide shipments for the Street Fighter series. That is a franchise-wide shipment total reported in 2022; it is not directly comparable to the seven-million cumulative sales figure for Street Fighter 6 reported in 2026. What remains unverified about the “saved from dying” claim
The available official material documents a new concept proposal, design changes, release platforms, and sales milestones. It does not document the franchise’s condition before development in a way that proves it was dying, nor does it verify that Matsumoto said he saved it. A June 2022 Game Informer interview features director Takayuki Nakayama and producer Shuhei Matsumoto discussing lessons from the past, but its available description does not establish that either person made the specific “saved from dying” claim. Game Informer’s 2022 interview
The most supportable account is narrower: Matsumoto and Nakayama helped put forward a substantially rethought concept; Capcom added approaches such as Modern Controls and strengthened accessibility features; and the released game went on to reach reported sales milestones. Calling that a rescue from certain decline goes beyond what these sources establish.
