Bloomberg reported on October 4, 2024, that Tencent and Ubisoft’s founding Guillemot family were considering options that included a potential buyout. Ubisoft later said it regularly reviews strategic options, but did not announce an agreement. A separate Tencent investment in Ubisoft subsidiary Vantage Studios closed in November 2025; it was not a purchase of Ubisoft as a whole.
What Bloomberg reported about a possible Ubisoft buyout
Bloomberg’s October 4, 2024 report said Tencent and the Guillemot family were considering options for Ubisoft, including a potential buyout. The report attributed the information to people familiar with the matter. It described an option under consideration—not a signed agreement, a completed transaction, or a public offer. The report did not establish that Tencent would acquire Ubisoft, that the family had agreed to sell, or that control would change. No confirmed set of competing buyout offers was established in the cited reporting.

What Ubisoft said—and did not say
On October 7, 2024, Ubisoft’s response, as reported by Game World Observer, was that it was aware of recent press speculation and “regularly reviews all its strategic options.” That was a general acknowledgment of speculation, not confirmation of a buyout proposal or agreement. Why Tencent already had a relationship with Ubisoft
Tencent and Ubisoft had a disclosed relationship before the 2024 report. In a September 6, 2022 announcement, Ubisoft said Tencent would acquire a 49.9% economic interest and 5% of the voting rights in Guillemot Brothers Limited, the Guillemot family’s holding company. Ubisoft also said its board had authorized Tencent to increase its direct stake in Ubisoft from 4.5% to as much as 9.99% of the company’s capital or voting rights. See Ubisoft’s 2022 announcement.
Those disclosed stakes and rights did not amount to Tencent taking control of Ubisoft. The 2022 agreement also set limits on Tencent’s share dealings: it included a five-year restriction on disposing of Ubisoft shares and an eight-year restriction on increasing its direct stake beyond 9.99%, subject to stated exceptions. Those were terms of that agreement, not a complete account of current ownership.

The later Tencent deal was for Vantage Studios, not Ubisoft
In March 2025, Ubisoft’s annual report described a planned Tencent-backed subsidiary focused on Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six, with closing then expected by year-end. Ubisoft’s financial information page provides access to its annual reporting.
Ubisoft announced on November 21, 2025, that Tencent’s €1.16 billion investment in Vantage Studios had closed. Tencent received a 26.32% economic interest in that subsidiary. Ubisoft said Vantage remained exclusively controlled and consolidated by Ubisoft. The deal therefore concerned a subsidiary, not a buyout of Ubisoft as a whole. Read Ubisoft’s closing announcement.

Ubisoft CEO and co-founder Yves Guillemot described the transaction this way: “I am very pleased to announce the closing of our strategic partnership with Tencent, which now becomes a minority shareholder in our new subsidiary, Vantage Studios.” That statement refers to Vantage Studios, not the 2024 buyout possibility.
| Question | 2024 buyout report | 2025 Vantage Studios investment |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Ubisoft as a whole was among the possible subjects of a buyout under consideration, according to Bloomberg. | Vantage Studios, a Ubisoft subsidiary. |
| Status | Reported consideration; no completed buyout was confirmed. | Closed on November 21, 2025, according to Ubisoft. |
| Control | The report did not establish a change in control. | Ubisoft said it retained exclusive control and continued to consolidate the subsidiary. |
| Tencent’s disclosed interest | No buyout stake or finalized terms were established in the report. | 26.32% economic interest in Vantage Studios for €1.16 billion. |
Did the reported buyout option go anywhere?
The available announcements and reporting do not establish whether the 2024 buyout option advanced to a formal proposal or was abandoned. The confirmed 2025 subsidiary investment does not answer that question: it was a separate transaction with a different scope. It would be inaccurate to treat Vantage’s closing as proof that Tencent bought—or agreed to buy—Ubisoft.
