Game Freak acknowledged unauthorized access in a notice dated October 10, 2024. But the official archive listing does not establish that the intruder accessed source code for Pokémon games on Nintendo Switch. Secondary reporting describes source code and Switch-related development builds among leaked materials; that is not proof that source code for every Switch Pokémon game was taken, or that it could be used to compromise consoles.
What Game Freak confirmed
Game Freak’s 2024 news archive lists an October 10, 2024 notice titled “不正アクセスについてのお知らせとお詫び,” translated as “Notice and apology regarding unauthorized access.” The archive establishes that the company issued a notice about unauthorized access on that date.

The linked notice is a PDF, but the accessible archive listing does not expose its body text. On the evidence available here, it would be inaccurate to attribute a particular file inventory, named game, or source-code repository to Game Freak’s statement.
What reports say was taken
A secondary summary of reporting about the leak describes about 1 TB of data reportedly stolen from Game Freak servers in August 2024. It says the material included older game builds, concept art, documentation, employee data, and source code. These are reported claims, not details established by the accessible official archive listing.

The same summary says in-development builds of Pokémon Legends: Z-A for Switch appeared among files released later. That supports a limited claim: Switch-related development builds were reported in the leaked material. It does not establish that the hacker accessed source code for every Pokémon Switch game, or even identify a confirmed set of Switch-game source repositories.
Why a game build is not the same as source code
A development build is a compiled version of a game. Source code is the human-readable material developers use to create software. Reports that builds for a Switch game were among leaked files do not, by themselves, prove that the corresponding source code was also included. Even a report that source code was obtained does not identify which game or repository it came from unless that scope is separately established.

- Travel to the Hisui region—the Sinnoh of old—and build the region’s first Pokédex
- Learn about the Mythical Pokémon Arceus, the key to this mysterious tale
Game Freak’s 2024 topics archive identifies Pokémon Legends: Z-A as part of the Pokémon series and said it was planned for worldwide release in 2025. That provides franchise and release context; it does not verify which files were taken.
Why Nintendo’s Switch security notice does not confirm the breach’s scope
Nintendo’s May 31, 2024 notice in GitHub’s DMCA repository discusses encryption and keys used in Switch technological protection measures. It concerns a separate copyright and anti-circumvention matter. It does not verify the Game Freak intrusion, identify data taken from Game Freak, or show that leaked code could bypass Switch protections.

What remains unestablished
- Which specific Game Freak repositories or files were accessed.
- Whether any particular Pokémon Switch source code was among the material.
- Whether the reported code is authentic, complete, or usable.
- Whether the reported leak enabled anyone to compromise players’ consoles or accounts.
The careful answer is therefore narrower than the headline claim: unauthorized access was acknowledged by Game Freak, and secondary reporting described source code and Switch builds in leaked material. The available official archive listing does not confirm that the hacker obtained source code for Pokémon Switch games as a category.
