It is a historical snapshot—not a current release guide: the versions and event dates below reflect the roundup’s publication context.
Lee Reilly’s January 2024 Game Bytes, published January 18 and updated January 22, surveyed games, development tools, open-source projects, and game jams connected to GitHub. The highlights span a gravity-flipping platform puzzle, a multiplayer shooter, a roguelike set on a hyperbolic plane, and a large-scale RPG reimplementation.
Games: updates, a launch, and a major project milestone
VVVVVV 2.4
VVVVVV is a puzzle-platform game built around a simple reversal: rather than jump, the player flips gravity. The game debuted in Flash in 2010, received a C++ port in 2011, and became open source in 2020. The roundup says version 2.4 added translations into 21 languages, bug fixes, and performance improvements. Creator Terry Cavanagh credited the community’s role: “None of this would be possible without the many contributors to the game’s source code on [GitHub].” The language count and quotation are reported by the GitHub Blog, not an independently verified current count.
Hypersomnia
Hypersomnia is a fast-paced, top-down 2D multiplayer arena shooter whose stated inspirations include Counter-Strike and Hotline Miami. According to the roundup, development began in 2013 and the game made its Steam debut in December 2023. The article also reported that its texture-packing technology had been reused in a AAA game and drone software; that is the roundup’s account, not a measure of the game’s audience or commercial success.

#1 Best Overall
Hyperrogue 13.0
Hyperrogue is a roguelike that takes place on a hyperbolic plane, where geometry does not behave like a conventional flat grid. Version 13.0 added a crossbow, a Minesweeper-style variation on non-periodic tiling, and more ways to visualize non-Euclidean geometries. It is the most directly geometry-focused pick in the roundup.
Daggerfall Unity 1.0
Daggerfall Unity is a reimplementation of The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall. The January 2024 article described it as the most complete reimplementation and treated version 1.0 as the project’s completion milestone. It reported builds for Windows, macOS, and Linux, with mod support, optional graphics overhauls, quality-of-life changes, and hundreds of bug fixes. “Complete” here refers to the project milestone as characterized in that article; it does not mean the original game or its modding scene stopped changing.
Rank #2
Engines and the Godot ecosystem
Heaps.io 2.0
Heaps.io is a Haxe-based engine for games targeting web, mobile, desktop, and consoles. The roundup identifies its creator as the original designer of Haxe and highlights three areas in version 2.0: refactored buffers, unified shader caching, and production-ready DirectX 12 support. These are release highlights, not comparative performance results.
W4 Games and Godot
W4 Games develops commercial products around Godot, including console-porting middleware and cloud infrastructure. The roundup reported that the company announced a $15 million Series A funding round, with plans to support ecosystem development and continued contributions to Godot. That figure and intended use are the GitHub Blog’s January 2024 reporting, not a current funding update.
Rank #3
Tools, interface experiments, and game preservation
GodotOS
GodotOS is an open-source experiment in building a desktop-style interface with Godot. The roundup describes folder browsing, text editing, image viewing, and games, and notes that a web version was available. It is best understood as a UI showcase, not a production operating system intended to replace Windows, macOS, or Linux.
LDtk 1.5
LDtk, the 2D Level Designer Toolkit, released version 1.5 with global search across project elements and faster loading for large projects and levels. Other listed changes included biomes, interface updates, and expanded JSON exports. For level designers, the practical draw is a mix of project navigation and workflow improvements rather than a new game engine.
Rank #4
ScummVM 2.8.0
ScummVM preserves classic games by reimplementing engines and supporting games on modern systems. Its 2.8.0 release carried the subtitle “Mysteries, Mammoths, and Muppets.” The GitHub Blog reported 50 newly supported games and ScummVM’s arrival on the iPhone and iPad App Store. Those are release details as reported in January 2024; supported titles and platform availability may have changed since.

GitHub Game Off 2023
The 2023 edition of GitHub Game Off ran in November around the theme “Scale.” The roundup reported 632 entries and highlighted the difficulty of selecting projects to feature. That number is the article’s historical submission count, not a measure of entries in later editions.

Events listed at the time
The article previewed the Global Game Jam, scheduled then for January 22–28, and the 7DRL Challenge 2024, scheduled then for March 1–11. Both dates are in the past; they are included to explain the original roundup’s event coverage, not as current schedules.
Game of the Month: Grapple Pack
Grapple Pack, a Game Off 2023 entry, was the roundup’s Game Jam Game of the Month. It is a puzzle-platform game centered on a grappling hook. The article called out its fully voiced dialogue, challenging-but-fair puzzles, and assist settings, and pointed readers to its browser version on itch.io.
Choosing what to explore
The roundup does not offer controlled testing or a quality ranking. A useful way to choose among its highlights is by the kind of experience or work you want:
- For a puzzle-platform challenge: try VVVVVV for gravity-flipping levels or Grapple Pack for grappling-hook puzzles.
- For multiplayer action: look at Hypersomnia, the top-down arena shooter.
- For unusual geometry: explore Hyperrogue and its non-Euclidean world.
- For a classic open-world RPG project: investigate Daggerfall Unity and its mod-supported reimplementation.
- For development: consider Heaps.io as an engine, LDtk as a 2D level-design tool, GodotOS as an interface experiment, and ScummVM as a preservation project.
