Did the Yooka-Replaylee Trailer Hint at Switch 2? What the 2024 Tease Actually Said

Playtonic’s October 2024 “Nintendo?” tease prompted Switch 2 speculation. Nintendo revealed Switch 2 months later, but never confirmed that the trailer was an authorized hint.

Possibly—but only as speculation. In an October 24, 2024 post about Yooka-Replaylee, Playtonic Games listed “PS5, Xbox Series consoles and… Nintendo?” without naming a Nintendo system. Reporters read the wording and a pair of animated eyes in the trailer as a possible hint at a successor to Switch. Nintendo announced Switch 2 on January 17, 2025, but that later reveal does not prove Playtonic’s tease referred to it or had Nintendo’s approval.

What did Playtonic actually say?

Playtonic’s October 24, 2024 announcement for Yooka-Replaylee said the game would be playable on “PS5, Xbox Series consoles and… Nintendo?” The post added, “Ooh mysterious. We’ll have more on that as soon as poss!” It described the new trailer as showing gameplay, content and orchestral music, but it did not name Switch 2 or any other Nintendo console.

Playtonic’s announcement is the primary source for the wording. Read literally, it establishes that Playtonic was teasing an unspecified Nintendo platform—not which system it meant.

Why did people think it was a Switch 2 hint?

In its same-day report, BGR pointed to the use of the broad label “Nintendo” instead of a specific console and described animated eyes appearing above the word in the trailer. In the context of rumors about Nintendo’s next hardware, those details invited a Switch successor interpretation. They did not confirm one.

BGR’s October 24, 2024 report framed the possibility as a hint, not an official disclosure. It also mentioned similar wording in a Kickstarter description for Pathea Games’ My Time at Evershine, which referred to “future Nintendo platforms yet to be announced.” That separate developer phrase does not establish that either studio was speaking for Nintendo or coordinating with it.

TweakTown likewise described Playtonic’s wording as a tease and said the timing of a Nintendo announcement was unknown. Predictions circulating at the time about when Nintendo might reveal new hardware were conjecture, not confirmation. TweakTown’s October 25, 2024 coverage is contemporaneous context, not evidence of Nintendo’s intent.

Did Nintendo later confirm Switch 2?

Yes. On January 17, 2025, Nintendo officially introduced Nintendo Switch 2 as “the successor to the Nintendo Switch system” and said it would be released in 2025. The announcement included a first-look video and set a Nintendo Direct for April 2, 2025. Those are later events, separate from Playtonic’s October 2024 post.

Nintendo’s announcement said Switch 2 would play games made exclusively for the new system as well as physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, while warning that some Switch titles might not be supported or fully compatible. This was Nintendo’s initial compatibility statement; it did not retroactively explain what Playtonic meant by “Nintendo?” Nintendo Australia’s announcement is the official source for those details.

Is the Mario Kart trailer part of the same story?

No. Nintendo’s Switch 2 first-look trailer, released in January 2025, included Mario Kart footage. That was a different trailer from Playtonic’s Yooka-Replaylee trailer in October 2024. GameSpot’s same-day report noted that the footage had appeared but, at that point, Nintendo had not established whether it showed an entirely new game or an expanded port. GameSpot’s January 16, 2025 report covered that separate question.

So, was the Switch 2 announcement actually hinted at?

The careful answer is that Playtonic’s ambiguous platform tease was interpreted as a possible Switch successor clue while Nintendo’s next console was still unannounced. Nintendo later revealed Switch 2, but the available statements do not show that Playtonic named it, leaked it, or had authorization to signal Nintendo’s plans. The clue was plausible speculation—not proof.
