There is no confirmed yes-or-no answer for every game called MW2. Activision’s current support page covers Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022), but the official sources reviewed do not confirm whether the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009) servers have shut down. Check the live status for your game and platform before treating a connection problem as a permanent shutdown.
Which MW2 do you mean?
The name can refer to two different releases. Activision announced the original Modern Warfare 2 for November 10, 2009, while Modern Warfare II is the separate 2022 game. Activision’s support entry for the 2022 title is not evidence of the 2009 game’s server status.
- Original: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009).
- Newer release: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022), released October 28, 2022.
- Remastered campaign: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered is a separate title; its name does not mean it includes the original game’s multiplayer.
Activision’s 2009 announcement identifies the original release. The 2022 launch announcement identifies the newer game and its release platforms.
Are the 2009 Modern Warfare 2 servers shut down?
The official sources available here do not establish whether the original game’s online services are currently active or shut down. They also do not provide a current status by platform or region. It would be inaccurate to claim either that the servers definitely still work or that Activision has definitely shut them down.

Activision’s Online Services Event Details page does not settle the original game’s live status. If you own a physical copy, that only addresses access to the game itself; it does not confirm present compatibility, stock, or access to online services.
What about Modern Warfare II (2022)?
Activision has a support page for Modern Warfare II with an Online Services section. The displayed platforms include PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Battle.net. Activision’s launch announcement lists PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Battle.net, and Steam as release platforms.

A support entry or launch-platform list does not guarantee that every platform or mode is reachable at this moment. For a current issue, use Activision’s live Online Services page rather than relying on an undated status snapshot.
How to tell a temporary connection problem from a shutdown
- Identify the exact release. Check whether the title is the 2009 Modern Warfare 2, the 2022 Modern Warfare II, or Campaign Remastered.
- Check Activision’s status page. Open Online Services and select the relevant game or service if prompted.
- Check your platform network. Activision advises: “If the status for your platform is online but you’re still having trouble connecting, check your platform’s network.” Its page links to status resources for Xbox, PlayStation Network, Battle.net, Nintendo, Steam, and Epic Games.
- Interpret the result cautiously. A reported outage can explain a current connection failure; an online status does not prove that an older title’s multiplayer service is available on every platform or in every region.
For the original 2009 release, these checks may help identify a current platform or service issue, but the cited official pages do not provide a definitive live server-status answer.

Can you still play MW2 online?
For the 2009 original, current online availability is not confirmed by the official sources cited here. For the 2022 release, Activision maintains a support entry, but that alone does not establish that every mode is reachable at the time you check. Confirm the exact title and consult both Activision and your platform’s live network status before deciding whether a problem is temporary or permanent.
