Yes. Zhongli staged Rex Lapis’s apparent death during Liyue’s Rite of Descension. Zhongli and Rex Lapis (Morax, the Geo Archon) are the same person, and the death scene was a deliberate performance rather than a genuine death followed by resurrection.
He did it to leave direct rule and test whether Liyue’s people and institutions could protect the nation without an Archon personally directing every decision. The Fatui were involved in the broader arrangement, but Zhongli’s contract with the Tsaritsa concerning his Gnosis is a separate matter whose complete terms remain private.

The direct answer: Rex Lapis did not actually die
At the Rite of Descension, Liyue’s citizens believe Rex Lapis has been killed. The event triggers a political and religious crisis: the nation has apparently lost the deity who founded and guided it for thousands of years. Zhongli, meanwhile, appears as an unassuming consultant working with the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor and helps the Traveler arrange the Rite of Parting.

The later reveal is that Zhongli is Rex Lapis. The body seen at the Rite was part of a staged scenario, not proof that Morax’s life had ended. The story never presents a resurrection. Zhongli survived continuously and moved through the crisis under his human identity.

The clearest in-game confirmation comes after the identity reveal. Paimon challenges him directly: “Yeah, you don’t think you went a little bit too far with that whole fake death thing!?” The Traveler also asks why he “feigned” his death. Those lines treat the event as a deception Zhongli consciously carried out, not an accident or misunderstanding.
What happened during the Rite of Descension?
Rex Lapis’s public ceremony
The Rite of Descension is a major Liyue ceremony in which Rex Lapis appears before the people. Because the Geo Archon is both a divine protector and the traditional source of political authority, any disruption to the rite has consequences far beyond a single funeral or religious observance.
During the ceremony, Rex Lapis appears to die. Witnesses see what looks like the corpse of their god, and the news spreads before anyone can establish what really happened. Liyue’s authorities must respond without clear guidance from the Archon, while the Traveler is pulled into the investigation.

Zhongli’s role as a Wangsheng Funeral Parlor consultant lets him participate in the practical response to the supposed death. He helps organize the Rite of Parting, the ceremony intended to honor Rex Lapis and close the chapter on the Archon’s earthly presence.
That role is strategically useful. Zhongli can guide the ritual, provide knowledge that an ordinary consultant should not possess, and observe how Liyue’s leaders and citizens react without openly taking command as Morax. The Traveler eventually notices that the consultant and the Geo Archon are one person.
The “body” was not a final proof
Seeing an apparent body does not establish that the Archon has permanently died. In this story, the scene is one element of a controlled performance designed to make the withdrawal believable. The apparent corpse creates a genuine emergency for Liyue’s institutions, but it does not represent Zhongli’s actual end.
Why did Zhongli fake his death?
He wanted to retire from direct rule
Zhongli had governed Liyue as Rex Lapis for an extraordinarily long time. His plan was not simply to hide his identity for convenience; it was to relinquish the role of active ruler. By allowing the people to believe their Archon was gone, he could step away from day-to-day authority instead of announcing a gradual retirement that might leave officials and citizens dependent on his approval.
The deception therefore served as a political transition. Liyue had to make decisions, manage danger and preserve social order without waiting for Morax to appear and settle every dispute. Zhongli’s objective was to see whether the nation had matured enough to stand on its own.
He designed a test of self-government
The supposed death placed Liyue under pressure. A successful transition required more than mourning: the nation’s people and governing institutions had to recognize threats, coordinate a response and defend the harbor themselves.
This is why the plot’s final test matters. Zhongli does not consider the experiment complete merely because the Rite of Parting is performed. He needs to know whether Liyue can act when the Archon is unavailable and the danger is immediate. The crisis surrounding the Fatui and the awakened threat forces the nation to demonstrate that capacity.

He accepted the risk of losing control
A staged death could have produced panic, factional conflict or a demand for a replacement Archon. Zhongli deliberately allowed those possibilities to develop rather than intervening at the first sign of disorder. His plan only has meaning if Liyue’s own institutions, including the Qixing and the adepti, are allowed to respond without him quietly directing events from the shadows.
That does not mean every part of the crisis unfolds exactly as he prefers. The arrangement creates real danger, and other participants have their own objectives. Zhongli’s test is about whether Liyue can meet the challenge, not about proving that every actor shares his philosophy.
What role did the Fatui play?
The Fatui are involved in the arrangement that makes the crisis possible. Their participation helps produce a situation severe enough to test Liyue’s ability to defend itself. However, the story does not establish that the Fatui share Zhongli’s goal of building an independent, self-governing Liyue.
This distinction matters. Zhongli uses a broader plan that includes the Fatui, but cooperation on a transaction does not turn the Fatui into partners pursuing the same political ideal. Their motives remain their own, and the consequences of their actions create genuine danger for Liyue.
The Gnosis exchange is a separate issue
After the events in Liyue, Zhongli gives up his Geo Gnosis as part of a contract with the Tsaritsa. That exchange is connected to his decision to leave the Archon’s position, but it should not be treated as a full explanation of the fake death.

How the quest reveals the deception
- The Traveler arrives in Liyue for the Rite of Descension. Rex Lapis is expected to appear in the traditional ceremony.
- The ceremony ends in apparent disaster. Rex Lapis seems to die, and the city enters an emergency.
- The Traveler investigates the political and supernatural fallout. Different groups respond to the crisis while the source of the apparent death remains uncertain.
- Zhongli helps prepare the Rite of Parting. His expertise and access make him central to the funeral arrangements, even though he presents himself as a consultant.
- The Traveler learns Zhongli’s identity. Zhongli is revealed to be Rex Lapis, also known as Morax and the Lord of Geo.
- The Traveler and Paimon confront him about the deception. Their questions explicitly refer to him feigning his death and the “fake death thing.”
- Zhongli explains the purpose of the plan. He links the staged death and his withdrawal to the test of Liyue’s self-governance, while keeping the Gnosis contract confidential.
Did Zhongli lose his powers or get resurrected?
No. The plot does not describe a dead Archon returning to life. Zhongli remains alive throughout the sequence, although he is choosing to stop functioning as Liyue’s active Archon. The change is political and personal rather than a biological death followed by revival.
He also does not simply vanish from the world. After the reveal, Zhongli continues living under his human identity and working at the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor. His continued presence reinforces the point of the story: Liyue has lost its direct ruler, not its former ruler’s physical existence.

“Zhongli and Rex Lapis are different people.”
They are the same individual. Zhongli is the name and identity he uses while living among humans; Rex Lapis and Morax are titles and names associated with his existence as the Geo Archon.
“The Fatui killed Rex Lapis.”
The ceremony’s apparent death is staged. The Fatui are involved in the surrounding plan, but the evidence does not support describing the event as a successful assassination of Morax.

“The Gnosis deal explains every detail.”
The Gnosis exchange is part of a private contract with the Tsaritsa. The game does not disclose all of that contract’s terms, so it cannot be used to fill in details Zhongli deliberately withholds.
“Zhongli faked the death only to trick the Traveler.”
The Traveler is one observer caught in a much larger political experiment. Zhongli’s stated purpose is to test Liyue’s ability to function without his direct rule, which requires convincing the entire nation that Rex Lapis is gone.
“Liyue’s crisis was harmless because Zhongli was always ready to fix it.”
Zhongli’s continued existence does not make the danger imaginary. He intentionally refrains from ruling openly while Liyue faces the consequences of the crisis. The test is meaningful precisely because he does not simply resume command.

What the staged death changes for Liyue
The Rite of Descension marks the end of an old relationship between Liyue and its Archon. For centuries, people could look to Rex Lapis as the ultimate authority, protector and source of binding contracts. After the staged death, that authority cannot be taken for granted. Officials must justify decisions through institutions and collective action rather than a divine command.
The arrangement also changes how Zhongli himself relates to the nation. As Rex Lapis, he could impose a solution. As Zhongli, he can advise, observe and participate as a citizen, but he no longer claims the formal power to decide Liyue’s future. His restraint is the practical proof that the retirement is real even though the death was not.
The story therefore uses a fake death to dramatize a transfer of responsibility. The central question is not whether Morax can survive; it is whether Liyue can survive without depending on him.
What is confirmed, and what is intentionally left vague?
- Confirmed: Zhongli is Rex Lapis/Morax.
- Confirmed: Rex Lapis’s apparent death at the Rite of Descension was staged.
- Confirmed: Zhongli planned to retire from direct rule and evaluate Liyue’s self-governance.
- Confirmed: The Fatui were involved in the arrangement surrounding the crisis.
- Confirmed: Zhongli exchanged his Gnosis under a contract with the Tsaritsa.
- Not fully specified: The complete terms of that contract.
- Not established: That the Fatui shared Zhongli’s political aims or that the apparent body represented a literal death.
The transcript of “The Fond Farewell” records the identity reveal and the characters’ references to a feigned death. It is a secondary transcript rather than an official downloadable script, so dialogue-based conclusions should stay within what the quest actually says. On those terms, the answer is unambiguous: Zhongli faked Rex Lapis’s death as part of his retirement and test of Liyue.
