Digital Game Buying Guide: Storage, Licenses, Sharing, and Offline Access

By VGSources Team 13 min read

Short answer: buying a digital game gives your account a platform entitlement, not an unrestricted file you own outright. You can usually download it to compatible devices, but access still depends on the owning account, device activation, license checks, and any publisher-required online service. Before buying, verify storage hardware, offline preparation, household-sharing limits, save-data protection, and what happens if a subscription or store catalog changes.

What a digital game purchase actually gives you

A digital purchase is an account-and-platform entitlement. The store records that your account may download and use the game under that platform’s license rules. The downloaded files are only one part of access: the console or PC may also check the account, the activated device, a subscription, or the publisher’s servers.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Microsoft describes a license as “a digital key that confirms the user’s right to access content on the device.” That wording captures the practical distinction between digital and physical buying. You normally do not receive a transferable copy that can be sold, lent indefinitely, or used on any device without authentication. Your usable rights are bounded by the platform account, its device rules, and the game’s own online requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Account ownership: the purchasing account is the account associated with the entitlement. Keep that account secure and record which family member owns important games.
  • Device activation: each platform has a way to designate a console or PC for offline or household use. Changing that designation can affect who else can launch the game.
  • License validation: a device may need to check the entitlement periodically or when the account or hardware changes. Offline access is therefore conditional, not a universal permanent right.
  • Publisher services: a game can require its own servers for multiplayer, authentication, cloud features, or even launching. A valid store purchase cannot remove a publisher’s online requirement.

Do not assume that a game will remain downloadable forever, that a subscription catalog title will become yours when downloaded, or that digital purchases can be resold. Platform policies make those outcomes conditional.

Can you play a digital game offline?

Often, yes—but only after preparation and only when the title supports offline use. Download the complete game and updates, activate the platform’s sharing or offline setting, launch the title once while connected if it requires an initial license check, and test it with the network disconnected. An offline-capable campaign can still lose online multiplayer, cloud features, account sign-in, or publisher authentication.

Offline preparation checklist

  1. Download the game and required content. Install the base title, mandatory patches, and any expansion you expect to use while traveling.
  2. Set the correct offline or sharing device. This is the console or PC the platform will trust when it cannot contact the store.
  3. Open the game while online. Complete first-run sign-in, license validation, and any publisher account linking before leaving your connection.
  4. Test offline. Disconnect Wi-Fi or unplug the network cable, then start the game from the intended user profile.
  5. Check the game’s own requirements. A title can be excluded from family sharing or require an online service even when the platform itself supports offline licenses.

When a platform says offline play is supported, that describes its license mechanism—not a guarantee for every title. Periodic renewal or revalidation may still be required.

Platform comparison: storage, offline access, and sharing

Platform Expansion and direct play Offline and license behavior Household sharing Cloud-save detail established here
PlayStation 5 Compatible M.2 SSD expansion up to 8TB; compatible PS5 and PS4 games can be downloaded, managed, and played from the high-speed expansion. Console Sharing and Offline Play permits users of one enabled PS5 to play purchased and downloaded content offline. A padlock can indicate license, network, ownership, or subscription trouble. One PS5 can have Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled at a time. PlayStation Plus lists 100GB of online storage for PS5/PS4 saves.
Xbox Series Current-generation titles use internal storage or an approved expansion path. Confirm the specific approved expansion-card model before buying. Home Xbox on console and Offline permissions on PC provide device-based licensing. Microsoft documents that some offline licenses must be renewed periodically. Home Xbox/offline-device licensing is device-based and subject to concurrency and license checks. Not stated in the supplied platform guidance; verify the current Xbox save policy for your account.
Steam PC storage is user-selectable. Local-network transfers can copy installation and update files between PCs without downloading them again from Steam’s content servers. A Family Sharing game can be played offline when the game supports Family Sharing. Some games are excluded for technical or publisher reasons. Steam Families supports the purchaser plus up to five close family members—six members total. Shared access remains with the purchaser and is not a transfer of ownership. Not stated in the supplied platform guidance; check the game and Steam settings before relying on cloud saves.
Nintendo Switch 2 Game storage requires microSD Express, with cards up to 2TB supported. Ordinary microSD cards are not supported for Switch 2 game storage. Virtual-game-card, online-license, and account rules determine which console can launch a title. An account cannot ordinarily access games on multiple consoles simultaneously. Options include moving a virtual game card, lending under the family system, or using an online license; each has different simultaneous-use limits. Save data is stored in system memory and cannot be copied to a microSD card. Use the platform’s Save Data Cloud where your title and membership support it.

PlayStation 5: one shared console and up to 8TB of playable expansion

Enable Console Sharing and Offline Play

Sony’s setting lets anyone using the enabled PS5 “play your games and media even when the console is offline.” It applies to purchased and downloaded content on that console and is useful for a household device. The setting can be active on only one PS5 at a time, so enabling it on a second console changes which machine receives that shared offline benefit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Sign in on the PS5 with the account that bought the game.
  2. Open Settings, then Users and Accounts.
  3. Choose Other and open Console Sharing and Offline Play.
  4. Select Enable on the household PS5.
  5. Download the game while signed in, then test it from the intended household user profile with the console disconnected.

If a game displays a padlock, Sony directs users to check the license, network connection, ownership account, and subscription status. Reconnect the console, sign in with the purchasing account, and confirm that the title is still owned or included in an active subscription before attempting a license restore.

Choose the right PS5 storage

Sony’s current guidance allows a compatible M.2 SSD expansion of up to 8TB. Compatible PS5 and PS4 games and media apps can be stored, downloaded, managed, and played directly from that high-speed expansion. Buy a compatible M.2 NVMe SSD with a heatsink and verify its fit and performance against Sony’s requirements before installation.

An external USB drive serves a different purpose. It is useful for storing and archiving content, but the storage location does not automatically make a PS5 title playable from that drive. Plan to move a title back to internal or compatible M.2 storage when direct play is required.

Xbox: Home Xbox, offline permissions, and current-generation storage

Xbox separates account-wide ownership from a device’s offline license. On console, the Home Xbox designation gives the intended household machine access to games under the device license. On Windows PC, Microsoft documents Offline permissions for the designated device. These settings are designed for a primary device, not unlimited simultaneous use on every machine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare before travel or a connection outage

  1. Sign in with the purchasing account while online.
  2. On the console, set the intended household machine as Home Xbox; on PC, enable the device’s Offline permissions setting where available.
  3. Install the game and all required updates.
  4. Launch it online once and complete any publisher sign-in or account linking.
  5. Disconnect the network and test the game from the profile that will use it offline.

Microsoft documents device limitations, concurrency checks, and offline-device behavior, including periodic renewal for some offline licenses. Treat offline play as a permission that may need refreshing rather than a permanent guarantee. A game that depends on a publisher server, competitive service, or online account cannot be made fully offline by changing Home Xbox.

For Xbox Series storage, current-generation titles use internal storage or an approved expansion path. Verify the exact expansion-card model and capacity compatibility before purchase; a generic USB drive is not a substitute for the approved path for playing current-generation titles.

Steam: family libraries, offline eligibility, and PC-to-PC transfers

How Steam Families sharing works

Valve says Steam Families lets users play games from “up to five close family members libraries,” creating a family group of six members in total. The purchaser keeps ownership. Other members receive temporary access under the family rules, and some games are excluded for technical or publisher reasons.

Because the entitlement remains with the purchaser, removing a member, leaving the family, or changing the owning account can end shared access. Check a game’s Family Sharing eligibility before promising a title to another household member, particularly for games with separate launchers, subscriptions, or always-online services.

Use a shared game offline

Steam Support states that a family-library game can be played offline when that game supports Family Sharing. Put Steam into offline mode while connected, confirm that the shared title launches, and do not assume that every shared game has the same behavior. Publisher authentication can still block the game.

Transfer installations over the local network

Steam can copy installation and update files between PCs on the same LAN instead of downloading them repeatedly from Steam’s content servers. Both Steam clients must be online and on that same local network. This saves bandwidth and time in a multi-PC home, but it does not transfer ownership: each user still needs an entitlement or eligible family-library access.

Nintendo Switch and Switch 2: virtual game cards, lending, and save data

Nintendo states that “Game save data and your digital games and downloadable content are tied to your Nintendo Account.” That account relationship is the starting point for moving games between consoles, but the available method matters.

Distinguish the three access methods

  • Move a virtual game card: relocate the digital title’s virtual-card representation to another console under Nintendo’s account and console rules.
  • Lend within the family system: use Nintendo’s family lending feature where eligible; lending is not the same as giving away ownership and has its own return and simultaneous-use limits.
  • Use an online license: launch through the account’s online-license permission when the console is connected. This is convenient, but it is not equivalent to making multiple consoles permanently offline-capable.

Under the ordinary model, one account cannot access its games on multiple consoles simultaneously. Before changing consoles, decide whether the goal is a permanent move, temporary lending, or online-license access; the restrictions differ.

Switch 2 storage and saves

Switch 2 supports only microSD Express cards for game storage, with capacities up to 2TB. Ordinary microSD cards are not supported for Switch 2 game storage. Buy a microSD Express card and verify its capacity before moving a large library.

Storage expansion does not back up saves. Nintendo says save data is stored in system memory and cannot be copied to a microSD card. Use the platform’s Save Data Cloud backup when the game and membership support it, and do not remove a card expecting it to contain your progress.

How much storage should you buy?

There is no reliable universal “average game size” because install requirements vary by title, platform, language packs, updates, and downloadable content. Use the game’s current store listing for the required space, then leave headroom for patches and a second or third large install.

Your situation Practical choice Important limitation
PS5 library of current-generation games Compatible M.2 NVMe SSD with a heatsink; Sony supports expansion up to 8TB. Only compatible high-speed expansion can run PS5 games directly; an external USB drive is primarily for storage and archiving.
Switch 2 digital library microSD Express card, up to 2TB. Ordinary microSD cards do not provide Switch 2 game storage; saves remain in system memory.
Xbox Series current-generation games Internal storage or the approved expansion-card path. Confirm the exact approved card; generic external storage is not the equivalent for direct play of current-generation titles.
Several household PCs using Steam Enough local SSD space for the games you play most, plus an external archive drive and Steam’s LAN transfer feature. Transferring files does not grant another account ownership or bypass Family Sharing eligibility.

Storage, cloud saves, and game access solve different problems

A storage device holds installed game files. A cloud-save service protects progress. Neither one replaces the account entitlement or a required online service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Local expansion: M.2 SSD, expansion card, microSD Express, or PC storage increases installed-game capacity.
  • Archive storage: an external drive can keep files available for later transfer or reinstallation where the platform permits it.
  • Cloud saves: online storage preserves save data separately from the game installation. PlayStation Plus lists 100GB for PS5/PS4 saves; other platform limits and requirements vary and should be checked for the account and title.
  • Account recovery: cloud saves cannot restore access to a game if the purchasing account, license, or publisher service is unavailable.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  • Redownload: use the owning account on the new device. The new device may need to be online for license verification.
  • Primary or shared-device activation: designate the new household console for offline access, which may remove that benefit from the old one.
  • Transfer installation files: copy data between devices where the platform supports it, but still authenticate the entitlement on the destination device.
  • Lend or share: use the platform’s family or virtual-card mechanism; access remains subject to member, device, and concurrency limits.

Save migration is a separate question. A copied game installation does not include progress unless the platform’s transfer or cloud-save process also moves the save data.

What if a store, subscription, or publisher service changes?

A purchase tied to your account is more durable than a subscription catalog entry, but continued use can still depend on download availability, license checks, and publisher servers. A game installed from a subscription should not be treated as permanently owned when the subscription ends or the catalog changes.

  • Purchased title: keep the owning account secure and download the game while it remains available to that account and platform.
  • Subscription title: access normally ends when the subscription or catalog eligibility ends unless you separately bought the game.
  • Online-dependent title: loss of publisher servers can disable multiplayer or launch authentication even when the store entitlement remains.
  • Console change: device activation may need to be reassigned, reducing offline access on the previous console.

For important single-player games, install them on the intended device, perform the platform’s offline test, and keep cloud or local save backups where supported. These steps reduce disruption but cannot guarantee access if a title’s own service is mandatory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common failure modes and fixes

The game shows a padlock or “license unavailable” message

  • Reconnect to the internet and sign in with the account that purchased the game.
  • Confirm that the title is still owned rather than subscription-only.
  • Check the platform’s shared or primary-device setting.
  • Verify that any required subscription is active.
  • Launch once online, then repeat the offline test.

A family member cannot launch a shared game

  • Confirm the member is in the correct family or household group.
  • Check whether the game is excluded from sharing.
  • Look for another user currently consuming the owning account’s device or concurrency allowance.
  • Remember that publisher launchers and online services can impose separate restrictions.

The console has space but the game will not install

  • Read the store listing’s required install space, including update headroom.
  • On PS5, verify that the M.2 SSD is compatible and installed correctly.
  • On Switch 2, confirm that the card is microSD Express rather than ordinary microSD.
  • On Xbox Series, confirm that the expansion device is on the approved current-generation path.

Progress disappeared after changing storage or consoles

Game files and save files are separate. Restore the save through the platform’s transfer or cloud-save process. On Switch 2, a microSD Express card cannot contain a copy of system-memory save data.

Digital buying checklist

  1. Identify the account that will own the game and make sure every intended player can use that account’s sharing arrangement.
  2. Check whether simultaneous play is required; device-based sharing may not support two players at once.
  3. Read the game listing for install size, publisher-account requirements, and always-online or service-dependent features.
  4. Prepare offline access before travel: download, update, activate the device setting, launch online, and test disconnected.
  5. Choose platform-specific storage: compatible M.2 for PS5, microSD Express for Switch 2, approved expansion for Xbox Series, and suitable local SSD or archive storage for PC.
  6. Set up cloud-save protection where available, remembering that cloud storage does not replace game licenses.
  7. For subscription games, decide whether losing catalog access would be acceptable before relying on the title.
  8. Keep recovery details for the owning account; without that account, installed files do not prove a usable entitlement.

Bottom line for buyers

Digital games are convenient, portable within their platform, and easy to share when you understand the device rules. They are not unrestricted files: the account, activation device, offline checks, publisher servers, and subscription status all matter. Buy storage that your platform can actually use, prepare offline access while connected, separate save backups from game capacity, and choose sharing methods based on whether household members need sequential or simultaneous play.
