Choose physical PS5 games if you want to shop used, lend games, resell them, or use PS4 and PS5 discs—and you own (or plan to buy) a PS5 with a disc drive. Choose digital games if instant downloads, remote installation, no disc swapping, and an all-digital library matter more. Neither format automatically uses less installed storage: PS5 games install their playable data either way.
The best choice is therefore not a universal “cheaper” or “smaller” format. Compare the exact game, edition, region, sale date and used price, then weigh that price against convenience, resale flexibility and the console model you intend to keep.

These are format-level differences, not guarantees for every title. A particular disc can cost more than a digital sale, and a large disc release can still require a substantial download.

There is no stable, format-wide price gap in the official material available for this comparison. Prices change by title, edition, country, retailer, stock level, sale schedule and whether a copy is new or used. The reliable method is to compare the same product at the same time.

How to make an apples-to-apples price check
- Identify the exact SKU. Match the standard, deluxe and collector’s editions separately. A physical “launch edition” and a digital deluxe edition are not equivalent products.
- Set the geography and currency. PlayStation Store pricing and taxes differ by region, while retailer prices may include shipping or local fees.
- Record the date and condition. Note whether each figure is a regular price, a limited-time sale price, a new copy or a used listing.
- Include the complete cost. Add delivery, required subscriptions, storage expansion you would otherwise buy and any upgrade charge attached to the edition.
- Compare the same content. Check included downloadable content, language options, bonuses and whether a physical copy contains the full game or a download code.
Where physical copies can win
Physical games can be undercut by retailer promotions, clearance stock and used listings. A used copy can also retain some resale value, reducing your eventual net cost if you sell it after finishing the game. That value is not guaranteed; it depends on demand, condition, completeness and the current supply of copies.
Where digital copies can win
Digital games are available immediately through PlayStation Store and can become cheaper during Store sales. You avoid shipping and can begin a download without waiting for a delivery. Digital pricing remains tied to Sony’s storefront, so you cannot shop among independent sellers for the same account license.
A practical “net cost” calculation
For a physical copy, estimate purchase price + delivery − likely resale proceeds. For a digital copy, use the Store price and treat the license as having no normal resale value. Keep the comparison honest by labeling any resale figure as an estimate from a current listing rather than a guaranteed return.

Usually, no. A PS5 disc is not a zero-storage alternative. The console installs the game data needed for play, and updates or patches can add more. A digital purchase downloads that same type of playable data. The disc primarily acts as the delivery medium and ownership check, not as a way to avoid installation.
What the disc changes
Disc installation can save you from downloading the initial package if the required data is present on the disc, but the game may still need a network connection for patches, additional content or online features. A disc also has to remain inserted when the console verifies the license for play.

What digital changes
A digital game downloads over your network and occupies console storage once installed. It can be queued remotely and does not require a disc swap when you move between games. Deleting the installed data does not remove the purchase from your account; you can download it again while the Store license remains available.
Managing a large library
When internal space becomes tight, Sony supports two different expansion approaches:
- M.2 SSD expansion: A compatible M.2 solid-state drive installed in the PS5 can increase available storage and can download, copy and launch PS5 and PS4 games. Follow Sony’s compatibility and installation requirements for the specific drive.
- USB extended storage: A USB drive can archive PS5 games and store PS4 games. Sony states that a PS5 game kept on USB extended storage must be copied back to console storage before it can be played; PS4 games can be played directly from the USB drive.
That distinction matters more than the disc-versus-download decision if you keep many large PS5 titles installed. USB storage is useful as an archive, while an eligible M.2 drive is the option for launching PS5 games from expanded storage.
Which format is more convenient?
Digital convenience
- No disc swapping when changing games.
- Remote downloads and installation can prepare a console while you are away.
- The purchase is available to the account that bought it, subject to PlayStation account access and Store availability.
- You do not need shelf space or to protect a physical disc from scratches or loss.
Physical convenience
- You can install from the disc instead of downloading the entire initial package, although patches may still be required.
- A disc provides a tangible backup of the purchase medium and can be used on another compatible disc-drive PS5, subject to the game’s account and online requirements.
- You can hand the disc to someone else, trade it or sell it instead of leaving the value locked to one account.
The trade-off is the drive: every disc game requires the correct disc to be inserted, and changing titles means changing discs. Digital removes that interruption but depends on your account and the Store for redownload access.
Can you resell, lend or trade digital PS5 games?
Not in the ordinary way. A digital purchase is associated with the PlayStation account that acquired it, so you cannot normally transfer that single game license to a buyer or list it as a used copy. Account sharing or selling an entire account introduces security, access and terms-of-service risks and is not an equivalent to reselling a disc.

A physical disc can be lent, traded or sold as an object. The recipient may still need an account, patches, an online subscription or access to servers, and some discs use a one-time code for additional content. Those conditions affect how useful the disc is but do not remove its transferability as a physical copy.
How resale changes your real cost
If you routinely finish a game and sell it while demand is high, the resale proceeds can make a physical copy’s net cost lower than its sticker price. If you keep games permanently, resale has no practical value and digital convenience may be worth more. Do not assume a fixed percentage return: the available official material does not establish an average resale rate.
Is the PS5 disc version worth it?
The disc model is worth the extra flexibility when you expect to buy used games, borrow from friends, resell completed games, play PS4 discs, or take advantage of physical retailer pricing. It also gives you access to Blu-ray game discs while retaining the option to buy digital titles.
The PS5 Digital Edition is the cleaner choice when every purchase will be digital, you do not own PS4 discs, and you prioritize a disc-free setup. It cannot read PS4 or PS5 Blu-ray game discs, so choosing it removes the physical route permanently unless you later change consoles.
What the disc model includes
Sony describes the disc model as including an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive. It plays PS5 and PS4 Blu-ray games. The Digital Edition obtains games through PlayStation Store or subscriptions instead.

PS4 compatibility you should know
Sony’s PS5 FAQ said in 2020 that “more than 99% of the 4,000+ PS4 games” could be played on either PS5 model. That is a dated Sony figure, not a promise that every PS4 title works today or that every feature behaves identically. Check a specific game if backward compatibility is important.
Can you use PS4 discs on a PS5 Digital Edition?
No. The Digital Edition has no disc drive, so it cannot read a PS4 Blu-ray disc. To play that game on the Digital Edition, you need an eligible digital purchase or another digital access route. A PS5 with a disc drive can use compatible PS4 discs.
PS4 disc-to-PS5 digital upgrades
For an eligible PS4 disc upgrade to a digital PS5 version, Sony requires a PS5 with a disc drive. The PS4 disc must remain inserted each time you play the upgraded digital PS5 game. The disc is therefore still the license check; the upgrade does not make the copy usable on a Digital Edition.

On July 1, 2026, Sony announced that physical disc production for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting in January 2028. Sony said games released before that date are unaffected and remain available in disc format. The announcement changes the supply of new physical releases after January 2028; it does not erase existing discs or prevent a disc-drive PS5 from playing them.
If you are choosing a console for several years, consider whether your expected purchases will be older physical games, new releases after 2028, or a mixture. A disc drive remains useful for the existing PS4 and PS5 catalog, used-market purchases and pre-2028 releases, even as new-release supply changes.

A decision framework for different players
Choose physical when most of these are true
- You already own a PS5 with a disc drive or will buy that model.
- You compare used prices and retailer sales.
- You lend games or sell them after finishing.
- You own PS4 discs or want access to disc-based PS4-to-PS5 upgrades.
- You want a physical fallback if a download is impractical.
Choose digital when most of these are true
- You want to start playing as soon as the download completes.
- You regularly switch games and dislike disc swapping.
- You use remote installation and keep your purchases on one account.
- You do not plan to buy, lend or resell discs.
- You are comfortable relying on PlayStation Store availability for redownloads.
Choose a mixed library when your habits differ by game
There is no requirement to use one format exclusively. You might buy a frequently played multiplayer title digitally for instant access, then buy a story game physically and resell it. On a disc-drive PS5, both licenses can coexist in the same library. The important constraint is console compatibility: a Digital Edition cannot add disc capability later through software.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every disc saves download bandwidth
Check the installation screen and update requirements. A disc may contain the base data, but patches, language packs and online components can still require downloads.
Comparing different editions
Match the edition, included expansions and upgrade rights before declaring one format cheaper. A lower price can simply reflect fewer included items.

Forgetting the drive requirement for upgrades
A PS4 disc upgrade requires a PS5 with a disc drive, and the disc must stay inserted for play. It does not convert a Digital Edition into a disc-compatible console.
Treating USB storage as a launch drive for PS5 games
Use USB extended storage to archive PS5 games, then copy the game back to console storage before launching. PS4 games are the exception and can run directly from USB extended storage.
Budgeting around an assumed resale percentage
Resale depends on the individual game and market timing. Use a current used listing as an estimate and label it clearly; no official source establishes a universal resale percentage.
Bottom line
Physical is the stronger value strategy for players who shop used, resell, lend games or need PS4 discs, provided they own a PS5 with a drive. Digital is the stronger convenience strategy for instant, remote and disc-free access. Storage is essentially a draw because both formats install game data; solve a large-library problem with an eligible M.2 SSD or use USB extended storage as an archive, remembering that PS5 games must be copied back before play. Compare the exact title and edition on the same date in your region, then choose the format that matches how you actually buy and finish games.
