Hetzner’s published EU traffic allowance may suit a pre-encoded loop with high egress, but its traffic table was last changed in May 2024 and should be checked in the console. DigitalOcean offers a documented team-level transfer pool and a stated overage rate, which makes the cost easier to estimate. Neither provider’s pricing pages establish a recommended server size or prove a particular YouTube setup will work reliably.
Start with the stream’s bandwidth requirement
A VPS sending a stream continuously can use substantial outbound data. Estimate the requirement from the actual bitrate and the hours streamed, then compare it with the allowance for the exact provider, plan, and region. The provider figures below describe allowances and billing; they do not establish a suitable bitrate, audience size, encoder, or server configuration.
For a constant bitrate, a first-pass estimate is:
Monthly data in bytes ≈ bitrate in bits per second × streamed seconds ÷ 8.
Use the stream’s actual bitrate and schedule, and allow for protocol overhead and the details of the streaming workflow. A stream that runs 24/7 has far more streamed seconds than one used occasionally, so do not assume an entry-level VM’s included transfer will cover it. The calculation estimates the stream’s outgoing feed; it is not a count of viewers or an estimate of all possible traffic.

These are published provider figures, not a benchmark, and the example plans are not equivalent configurations. Taxes, currency, region, required IP resources, and current plan details affect the total. Check the provider’s current pricing and billing pages before committing.
How to choose for a continuous loop
Hetzner may fit a high-egress EU feed
For a pre-encoded loop hosted in Europe, Hetzner’s published 20 TB allowance for EU CX, CPX, and CAX is a potentially useful comparison point. The allowance is not evidence of stream stability or YouTube approval, and the traffic table’s last-change date makes an in-console check especially important. Add the separately billed IPv4 and VAT if required. If you use a US or Singapore location, check that region’s plan-specific allowance instead of applying the EU figure.

DigitalOcean may fit a reader who values pooled transfer costs
DigitalOcean’s team-level transfer pool can make the allowance useful across multiple Droplets, and its published $0.01/GiB outbound overage rate gives a basis for estimating excess transfer. Check how much of the pool other Droplets already consume: an individual server’s nominal allowance is not necessarily all available to that server.
Let the encoding workload determine compute sizing
A VM forwarding a pre-encoded loop and one performing real-time encoding have different CPU and memory demands. The provider pricing and billing pages do not recommend a YouTube encoder, server size, bitrate, resolution, or stream configuration. Do not choose a plan solely because its transfer allowance appears adequate; confirm that the intended workload fits the selected machine using a documented configuration or your own test.

Cost checks before launching
- Choose the region and plan. Compare the exact VM and location you intend to use, not an entry-price example from a different plan or region.
- Estimate outgoing data. Use the actual bitrate and expected running time, then account for protocol overhead and your workflow.
- Check remaining allowance. For DigitalOcean, account for other Droplets using the team pool. For Hetzner, check the exact family and location in the current console; do not assume the older traffic table is unchanged.
- Add billable resources and taxes. Include Hetzner Primary IPv4 if needed and applicable VAT. Check current plan-specific invoice details for either provider.
- Plan for the run duration. Powering off is not the same as deleting: both providers bill existing resources while stopped. DigitalOcean’s bundled plans have a monthly price cap, whereas newer v5 resource-based plans are not capped at 672 hours.
