DigitalOcean VPS for 24/7 YouTube Live Streaming in India: Setup Guide

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes—you can use a DigitalOcean Droplet to run an encoder or relay that sends a continuous stream to YouTube Live. The setup is straightforward in outline: secure an Ubuntu server, choose a Droplet for the actual encoding workload, configure a YouTube-compatible encoder, and test the entire path before leaving it unattended. The right plan depends on whether the server only relays an already encoded feed or encodes/transcodes video; DigitalOcean does not publish a guaranteed minimum size for this exact use case.

This guide covers the general DigitalOcean and YouTube requirements. It does not establish India-specific region availability, latency, taxes, or special encoder settings. Check the region selector and billing details in your own DigitalOcean account before provisioning.

How to stream 24/7 on YouTube using a VPS

Use this sequence to set up the server and validate the stream. The examples are an operational checklist, not a tested FFmpeg or relay configuration: your encoder software and implementation determine the exact commands and service files.

  1. Create and secure a Droplet. Choose a current Ubuntu LTS image from the options available in your account; Ubuntu 24.04 is an example LTS image in DigitalOcean’s setup guidance. Add your SSH public key during provisioning. After connecting, create a non-root account with sudo access and use that account for routine administration. Configure a DigitalOcean Cloud Firewall to permit inbound SSH and block other inbound services you do not need. Keep outbound access available for system updates and the stream connection. DigitalOcean describes Cloud Firewalls as free and stateful. Enable monitoring; decide whether Droplet backups fit your recovery needs. Cloud-init user data can automate first-boot setup, including users, applications, and SSH configuration.
  2. Choose the workload before choosing the size. A relay that forwards an already encoded feed has different CPU needs from a server encoding or transcoding video. DigitalOcean identifies dedicated CPU Droplets as suitable for steady workloads and CPU-optimized Droplets for CPU-bound work such as video and live streaming. Treat those as plan-selection guidance, not a guarantee that a particular size will work. Start with a test and observe CPU, memory, network use, and YouTube stream health before committing to a plan.
  3. Estimate transfer and check the plan allowance. Add up the outgoing bitrate of the stream and any simultaneously sent backup feed. Check the chosen Droplet’s included transfer and remember that included transfer is pooled across your DigitalOcean team. Watch projected use in billing. DigitalOcean’s pricing documentation, last verified August 25, 2026, lists an additional outbound-transfer charge of $0.01 per GiB beyond the included allowance; inbound transfer is free. The amount included and the Droplet’s base price depend on the plan, so check your account for the applicable figures.
  4. Enable YouTube Live and retrieve the credentials. YouTube says a channel must be verified, must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Enable live streaming ahead of the planned start. In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key, then enter them in your encoder. Keep the key private: anyone with it may be able to send video to your channel. Use the preview to check that YouTube receives the intended feed before starting the public broadcast.
  5. Configure the encoder for the resolution and codec you will actually send. Use YouTube’s published guidance below as a starting point. Set constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. Make sure the server’s available outbound bandwidth has headroom above the combined stream bitrate.
  6. Supervise and test the process. Add process supervision and reconnect behavior appropriate to your chosen encoder or relay, then test what happens if the process stops, the server reboots, or YouTube drops the connection. These are implementation recommendations; the cited DigitalOcean and YouTube documentation does not validate a particular systemd, FFmpeg, Docker, or relay setup. Monitor the encoder process, CPU, memory, outbound transfer, and YouTube stream health. If you are recording locally on the Droplet, confirm that the archive file continues to grow and that disk space is sufficient.
  7. Choose a session and archive plan. YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a YouTube archive matters, consider shorter sessions or a separate recording workflow, and test the behavior you intend to rely on.

Which YouTube encoder settings should you use?

The following bitrate figures are YouTube’s H.264 guidance for the stated resolution and frame rate, not universal figures for every codec or streaming mode. Do not substitute AV1 or H.265 values for these H.264 recommendations.

Output H.264 minimum bitrate H.264 recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
  • Rate control: CBR.
  • Keyframes: two-second interval recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Audio: AAC or MP3.
  • Ingest protocol: RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion.
  • Headroom: YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom over the combined primary and backup bitrate. Check the actual outbound capacity available to your Droplet rather than assuming a published network ceiling is guaranteed throughput.

YouTube’s encoder-settings guidance was accessed October 3, 2026; its streaming tips recommend the 20% headroom. Check the current YouTube guidance when configuring a different resolution, frame rate, or codec.

How much bandwidth does a 24/7 YouTube stream use?

For a constant outgoing bitrate, a useful decimal estimate is Mbps × 0.45 × hours = GB transferred. This is arithmetic, not a DigitalOcean usage guarantee, and it excludes protocol overhead and bitrate variation.

Constant stream bitrate Approximate transfer per day Approximate transfer for 30 days
8 Mbps 86.4 GB 2,592 GB
14 Mbps 151.2 GB 4,536 GB

These examples use the recommended H.264 rates shown above for 720p30 and 1080p30 respectively. Convert expected traffic into the units DigitalOcean uses for the plan allowance and overage, then compare it with the team’s pooled included transfer. The published additional outbound-transfer rate is $0.01 per GiB beyond that allowance (DigitalOcean pricing documentation, last verified August 25, 2026). Your actual bill depends on your Droplet plan, included transfer, stream bitrate, runtime, and other team traffic.

Can I use a DigitalOcean VPS for YouTube Live?

Yes. A Droplet can run software that relays an encoded feed or encodes/transcodes video and sends it to YouTube Live. What it can sustain depends on the selected plan and configuration; no universal minimum Droplet size is established for a 24/7 YouTube stream. A Droplet’s general network-throughput limit is not a promise of stream quality or a substitute for measuring real performance. DigitalOcean says non-GPU Droplets generally have a 2 Gbps maximum, while Premium CPU Droplets have a higher limit; these are ceilings, not guarantees.

The available official guidance does not establish India-specific latency or region guarantees.

Will YouTube save a 24/7 live stream?

Do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive to preserve one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. “Can be archived” is not a guarantee that every shorter stream will save successfully. If you need a complete recording, arrange a separate archive workflow and test it; if relying on YouTube archives, plan and verify shorter sessions.

Security, monitoring, and recovery checks

  • Protect access: use SSH-key authentication and a sudo-enabled non-root account. Keep the stream key private and avoid exposing encoder control interfaces to the public internet.
  • Limit inbound traffic: permit SSH through the Cloud Firewall and close other inbound services unless the implementation requires them. Preserve the outbound connectivity needed for updates and streaming.
  • Watch the whole path: monitor Droplet CPU, memory, network use, encoder status, and YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators. A running server process alone does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
  • Test failure recovery: before relying on unattended operation, deliberately test an encoder restart, a server reboot, and a dropped YouTube connection. Confirm that reconnect behavior works and that the stream returns to a healthy state.
  • Plan for data recovery: enable Droplet backups if they match your recovery needs, and separately validate any media archive. A server backup is not the same thing as a complete recording of the live broadcast.

Troubleshooting a 24/7 YouTube stream from a VPS

  • YouTube preview is blank or the stream will not start: check that live streaming is enabled for the channel, the stream URL and key are correct, and the encoder is sending the intended format. Re-enter the private key carefully if needed, and inspect the encoder’s connection status.
  • Stream health fluctuates or viewers see interruptions: check outbound bandwidth and YouTube stream health, then compare the combined primary and backup bitrate with available capacity. YouTube recommends 20% headroom. Check for CPU saturation if encoding/transcoding, and reduce workload or select a more suitable plan only after testing.
  • The encoder disconnects and does not return: inspect its logs and process-supervision behavior, then test reconnect behavior after a dropped connection and server reboot. A Droplet being online does not automatically mean the encoder has restarted or YouTube has resumed ingesting.
  • Transfer use or charges are higher than expected: compare actual outbound usage with the bitrate-based estimate, allow for protocol overhead and other team workloads, and check the team-level pooled allowance and billing projection.
  • The YouTube archive is missing or incomplete: check session duration. YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Use a separate tested recording plan when the complete recording is important.
  • The stream works from one region but not another: verify region availability in your DigitalOcean account and measure your own path. The official guidance here does not establish India-specific latency or regional guarantees.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing on YouTube rather than operate your own VPS and encoder, StreamNeo is a cloud service for 24/7 YouTube streaming: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. StreamNeo sends the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are supported in India; card checkout is available worldwide. StreamNeo plays uploaded video and streams to YouTube only; it is not a camera-based live broadcast. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
