DigitalOcean Droplets are general-purpose Linux virtual machines, but the official DigitalOcean pages reviewed here do not describe an equivalent ready-made loop-stream workflow. That is a documentation advantage, not evidence that Vultr is faster or more reliable. No comparative performance test is available.
Which provider is the better fit?
| What matters | DigitalOcean | Vultr |
|---|---|---|
| Documented loop-stream setup | General-purpose Linux Droplets; no directly equivalent YouTube loop-stream guide is documented in the official pages reviewed. | The Broadcaster Marketplace guide describes OBS, uploading source files to the server and VLC Video Source for looping multiple files in a 24/7 stream. |
| Compute choice | Droplets offer CPU, RAM, storage and network bandwidth, with shared and dedicated CPU options. | The tutorial demonstrates a server workflow, but the cited official sources do not establish a currently matched plan. |
| Outbound transfer | Includes an allowance pooled across the team; additional outbound transfer is billed at $0.01 per GiB. | Vultr documentation defines bandwidth as outbound transfer to the internet; the cited sources do not verify a current matching allowance. |
| Billing when stopped | Bundled CPU Droplets remain billable while powered off; destroying the Droplet ends billing. | The sources cited here do not establish an equivalent stopped-instance billing rule. |
| Evidence of performance or reliability advantage | No comparative test is available. | No comparative test is available. |
Vultr is the more straightforward choice if you want to follow a provider-published loop-stream tutorial. DigitalOcean remains an option if you are comfortable assembling the Linux, encoder and media-looping workflow yourself. Choose the actual VM only after checking its current CPU, memory, storage, region, transfer allowance and overage terms: neither provider’s tutorial establishes a minimum instance size for every resolution or encoding workload.
Estimate bandwidth before choosing a VM
A continuous stream sends data for as long as it runs, so the transfer allowance can matter as much as the VM’s monthly compute price. Use your selected video bitrate to estimate monthly outbound data, then compare it with the exact plan allowance and overage rate in the provider’s live catalog. A simple estimate is bitrate in megabits per second × 0.45 ≈ gigabytes per hour; multiply by operating hours for a rough total. Audio, protocol overhead and actual encoder output can change the result, so leave headroom rather than planning to consume the full allowance.
DigitalOcean bills additional Droplet outbound transfer at $0.01 per GiB; allowance is pooled at the team level. DigitalOcean’s billing documentation also explains that a 1,000 GiB allowance accrues at about 0.0004 GiB per second across the billing cycle; this is an explanatory billing example, not a recommended plan size. Bundled CPU Droplets use per-second billing with a monthly cap of 672 hours (28 days), and continue to incur charges when powered off because resources remain reserved. Destroy the Droplet to end billing. See DigitalOcean’s Droplet pricing and billing documentation.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For Vultr, verify the current plan’s outbound allowance and overage rate directly before deploying. Its Ubuntu streaming-server guide mentions 3 TB in the context of that tutorial; do not treat it as a universal or current allowance for every Vultr VM. Plan catalogs, prices, transfer allowances and regional availability can change, and the available official sources do not provide a verified current like-for-like price comparison.
Set up a 24/7 loop stream on a VPS
1. Choose and deploy the instance
On Vultr, start with the Broadcaster Marketplace guide. It describes deploying the Broadcaster instance, opening OBS and uploading source files to the server. Vultr also has an Ubuntu streaming-server guide that names OBS and FFmpeg. On DigitalOcean, create a Linux Droplet and install the software and media workflow you need; the official pages cited here document Droplets generally, not an equivalent turnkey loop-stream recipe.

Select an instance based on the work it will actually do. Looping a pre-encoded file is different from real-time transcoding: transcoding adds sustained CPU demand. Do not infer a minimum CPU or memory specification from a provider tutorial, because the cited material does not benchmark a particular resolution, codec or instance size. Confirm the selected region and network capacity, and check transfer terms before leaving a stream running continuously.
2. Put the media on the server and configure looping
Upload only video and audio you have the rights to stream. In the Vultr Broadcaster workflow, source files are stored on the server and VLC Video Source is used in OBS to repeat multiple files. Check the playlist order, transitions and repeat behavior before starting a public broadcast. If you build the loop yourself on another Linux VM, configure the encoder and playback method to restart or advance through the files as intended; the provider documentation cited here does not establish a one-click equivalent on DigitalOcean.

Prefer files already encoded to the output format you intend to stream if you do not need live conversion. If you choose to transcode, monitor CPU use and stream health under sustained load rather than assuming the selected VM will handle it indefinitely.
3. Configure YouTube and the encoder
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings. YouTube describes stream keys as similar to a password; do not share them or include them in public logs. If a key is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio before continuing. See YouTube’s live stream settings.
- Choose a resolution and frame rate, then select an encoder codec and bitrate appropriate to that output. YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than four seconds apart. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution and frame rate; for example, the listed H.264 recommendations are 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. Use the row that matches your chosen format, not a single bitrate for every stream. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate and resolution guidance.
- Prefer RTMPS where available. Check that the VM’s sustained upload capacity and the plan’s outbound transfer allowance can support the chosen bitrate continuously.
- Start a private or unlisted test first. YouTube recommends testing before going live; monitor stream health in Live Control Room and correct connection or encoding warnings before relying on the broadcast.
4. Keep the stream running and preserve the archive you need
After the test, verify that the loop advances or repeats correctly and that the YouTube stream remains healthy. YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume an indefinitely long broadcast will be saved as one archive. If you need a separate recording or a reliably preserved archive, verify YouTube’s current rules and arrange separate recording and storage.

Copyright, policies and monetization
A successful video loop is not proof that the content is cleared, policy-compliant or eligible for monetization. Use media you own or have permission to stream, and follow YouTube’s Terms of Service and Community Guidelines. Monetization depends on channel eligibility and applicable content policies; the fact that a stream repeats does not establish eligibility or revenue. Review YouTube’s current policies for your channel and content, particularly before building a channel around repetitive material.
