You can use OBS on an Amazon EC2 machine to send a prerecorded or live encoder feed to YouTube, but the available setup evidence does not establish a safe, tested EC2 instance size, installation path, launch command, recovery configuration, or cost. This guide covers the YouTube-side setup and the checks a 24/7 deployment needs; it does not pretend those missing EC2 details are verified. If your goal is simply to keep uploaded videos looping on YouTube without maintaining a computer or OBS instance, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option.
What a 24/7 EC2 stream requires
The basic chain is: video or other program material, an encoder running on EC2, an RTMPS connection from OBS to YouTube, and a YouTube live event that receives the feed. EC2 supplies the machine; it does not remove the need to configure OBS, protect the stream key, monitor the encoder and ingest health, or plan for archives and interruptions.
A continuous stream also creates operational questions beyond getting a preview to appear: Can the instance encode the chosen format continuously? Does OBS restart after a failure? Is the outgoing network capacity adequate? Where are recordings stored, and how are they retained? The available evidence does not verify answers for a particular EC2 region, instance family, operating system, or deployment, so treat those as items to validate rather than settled recipe steps.
Check YouTube channel eligibility first
YouTube requires an eligible channel to live stream. The channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions within the preceding 90 days. Initial live-streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours, so confirm access before preparing an event. These requirements are described in YouTube Help’s “Get started with live streaming.”

Before broadcasting, make sure the material is authorized for live use and review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies, including rules relevant to reused content. The sources available for this guide do not establish the detailed policy tests or guarantee that a particular playlist qualifies; do not assume that owning a recording, adding commentary, or streaming continuously makes it eligible.
Create the YouTube event and protect its credentials
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create or schedule a live stream, or select an existing event that you intend to use.
- Open Stream settings. Copy the stream URL and stream key displayed for that event. YouTube describes the key as the encoder credential used to send the feed.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password. Do not expose it in screenshots, public scripts, logs, or support posts. If it is disclosed, replace or reset it in Live Control Room before continuing.
- Use the event’s ingest details in OBS. Do not rely on a hard-coded endpoint copied from an old guide: the account-specific URL shown in Live Control Room is authoritative for your event.
Use RTMPS and configure OBS for the chosen stream
YouTube recommends RTMPS rather than legacy RTMP. RTMPS uses an encrypted contribution connection; Google’s “Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS” specifies the rtmps scheme and port 443. Copy the current RTMPS URL from Live Control Room, then enter it with the event’s stream key in OBS. OBS includes YouTube RTMPS service options, but its service data can change; use the current account-specific details rather than publishing or assuming a fixed endpoint.

In OBS, select the YouTube service if its current configuration matches your event, or use a custom server configuration when necessary to enter the URL supplied by Live Control Room. Exact OBS menu labels and setup steps can differ by version and operating system. The available evidence does not establish a current EC2-specific OBS installation or launch procedure, so verify those for the image and OBS release you actually deploy.
Set encoder output to match the picture you intend to send
- Rate control: YouTube recommends CBR.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Bitrate: Select it from YouTube’s encoder settings table for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate. As one specific reference point, YouTube lists 10 Mbps as the recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p at 30 fps. That is not a universal setting for other profiles.
- Codec: YouTube’s current encoder recommendations cover H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. The information available here does not establish that a chosen EC2 instance or OBS build can encode any one of them at the desired resolution and frame rate.
Do not select a high-resolution profile solely because YouTube accepts it. First validate that the EC2 configuration can encode it continuously and that the connection has sufficient capacity. The available evidence does not support recommending a particular EC2 size or claiming that a specific profile will run reliably on it.

Validate the stream before leaving it unattended
- Run a controlled test before the intended continuous broadcast. Confirm that OBS connects and that Live Control Room receives a preview with the expected picture and sound.
- Check stream health in Live Control Room. Watch for warnings or unstable delivery, and verify the selected profile against YouTube’s settings guidance.
- Leave bandwidth headroom. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend about 20% more upload capacity than the stream requires. Apply this as a capacity target, not as proof that an EC2 network path is adequate; measure the actual deployment.
- Test failure and recovery deliberately. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover. For EC2, separately validate what happens if OBS exits, the instance restarts, or the connection drops. The available evidence does not establish an EC2 process supervisor, restart policy, failover topology, or recovery time.
- Monitor the system during operation. Confirm that the encoder remains active, YouTube continues to receive a healthy feed, and any recording file is growing. Do not assume a successful initial preview means a deployment will stay live indefinitely.
Plan archives separately from the live broadcast
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A single 24/7 session should therefore not be treated as a dependable complete archive.
If you need a recording, arrange and test a separate recording strategy before going live. Confirm that files are being written and remain usable, monitor available storage, and decide how long recordings should be retained. YouTube’s “Archive live streams” and “Streaming tips” explain the platform’s archive caveat and recommend checking that local archive files are growing. The available information does not specify an EC2 storage configuration or its cost.

EC2 decisions this guide cannot responsibly fill in
The YouTube setup requirements do not determine the AWS deployment. Before relying on an EC2 stream, verify the following for your chosen region, operating system, instance, OBS version, and workload:
- Instance family and capacity for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you plan to encode.
- Current installation and launch steps for OBS on the selected operating system, including any display or audio requirements for your content.
- How OBS starts after a reboot and what restarts it after a crash or network interruption.
- How you will observe encoder health, YouTube ingest health, disk use, and recording growth, and how you will respond to alerts.
- Current EC2 compute, storage, and outbound data-transfer charges for the specific region and stream profile.

Common problems and what to check
- You cannot start a live event: Check channel verification, live-streaming eligibility, and any current restrictions. If this is the first enablement, allow for YouTube’s stated activation period of up to 24 hours.
- OBS cannot connect: Re-copy the stream URL and key from the selected event in Live Control Room. Confirm that you are using the RTMPS endpoint and that the URL uses the
rtmpsscheme. Keep the key private while troubleshooting. - The preview is unstable or stream health shows a problem: Compare OBS output to YouTube’s guidance for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check measured upload capacity and preserve the recommended headroom; do not assume a bitrate suitable for 1080p30 H.264 applies to another profile.
- The stream stops when nobody is watching the EC2 desktop: A desktop session being unattended is not evidence that OBS is supervised or will recover. Validate startup and restart behavior on the actual EC2 deployment and monitor it independently.
- A complete 24-hour recording is missing: YouTube may not capture a stream exceeding 12 hours. Use and verify a separate archive plan rather than depending on one uninterrupted YouTube archive.
- The stream returns after a disconnect but the archive has gaps: Broadcast recovery and recording continuity are separate concerns. Check both the feed in Live Control Room and the recording files, and test the behavior before depending on it.
