Spoiler warning: This guide reveals the Episode 5 puzzle in “Mr. Williams.” As Josef Cernan, climb the stairs marked by the cyan sign in Bridge Ops, find the wall terminal displaying Orbital Scanner Data, then follow the nearby corridor to the cockpit. A note beside the cockpit chair reads CAIF. Convert those letters to alphabet positions—C=3, A=1, I=9, F=6—and enter 3196 at the Orbital Scanner Data terminal. Walkthroughs describe the result as an unlock for terminal content or a secret, not as a documented major story branch.
What this Bridge Ops puzzle requires
The Episode 5 “Mr. Williams” terminal puzzle is a short environmental-code sequence. You need to reach the correct part of Bridge Ops, read one nearby note, convert four letters into four numbers, and type those numbers into the matching computer. There is no keycard, inventory object, consumable, repair tool, or separate hacking device involved.

You play as Josef Cernan when this sequence occurs. The room itself supplies every landmark you need: a staircase with a cyan sign, a wall-mounted display titled Orbital Scanner Data, a corridor leading to the cockpit, and a note next to the cockpit chair. If you know those landmarks, you can solve the puzzle without searching every desk or testing unrelated computers.
Some walkthroughs use different labels for the same interaction. You may see “Bridge Ops computer,” “Orbital Scanner Data terminal,” “Anomaly Log number,” or “secret terminal.” Those terms do not indicate multiple terminals or a second physical item. The dependable identifiers are the cyan-marked stairs and the wall screen showing Orbital Scanner Data.

Where the Bridge Ops terminal is
The puzzle takes place in Bridge Ops during Episode 5, “Mr. Williams,” while you control Josef Cernan. The terminal is mounted on a wall upstairs. Look for the staircase identified by a cyan sign, then locate the screen labeled Orbital Scanner Data. Guide terminology may also refer to this interaction as the Bridge Ops computer, an Anomaly Log entry, or a secret terminal; these labels describe the same puzzle location rather than separate objects. The Steam Community walkthrough provides the room directions and code derivation (Steam Community guide).
The cyan sign is the key navigation cue. If you remain on the lower level, the wall terminal will not be in your immediate view. Climb the marked stairs first, then scan the upstairs wall rather than looking for a freestanding console in the center of the room. The wording on the display matters: a similar-looking panel is not necessarily the one used for this code.
Do not search for a keycard, collectible, consumable, or special tool. The puzzle uses an environmental clue and the terminal’s number input. No separate item is required.

What you need before starting
- Episode and character: Episode 5, “Mr. Williams,” with Josef Cernan playable.
- Location: Bridge Ops, including access to the stairs marked by the cyan sign.
- Clue access: The nearby cockpit and the note beside its chair.
- Interaction: The ability to inspect the note and use the Orbital Scanner Data terminal.
- Solution method: Basic alphabet counting, with A treated as 1.
You do not need to buy an accessory, carry a decoder, or locate a replacement part. The game presents the clue as a room detail, and the number conversion is straightforward once the note is inspected.
Step-by-step solution
- Enter Bridge Ops in Episode 5. Continue until you can move around the room as Josef Cernan. The sequence is tied to this episode’s Bridge Ops area, not to a menu or a separate bonus screen.
- Take the cyan-marked stairs. The cyan sign is the navigation landmark used by the walkthroughs. Go upstairs rather than continuing through the lower-level route.
- Find the Orbital Scanner Data terminal. It is a wall-mounted computer displaying that title. If you reach a different computer, you are not at the puzzle terminal.
- Use the corridor beside the terminal. Follow it into the cockpit. You do not need to leave Bridge Ops or find another room first.
- Inspect the note beside the cockpit chair. The handwritten clue is CAIF. GameSpew independently identifies the cockpit post-it and its text in its Episode 5 walkthrough (GameSpew walkthrough).
- Translate the letters into digits. Read the clue from left to right and use each letter’s position in the English alphabet.
- Return to the Orbital Scanner Data terminal. Enter the resulting four-digit code, 3196, in the terminal prompt.
- Let the interaction finish. Wait for the terminal response or newly available entry before walking away. The guides identify the outcome as terminal content or a secret unlock.
How CAIF becomes the code
Each character is a direct alphabet-position substitution. There is no cipher, rearrangement, or arithmetic beyond counting from A as 1. The note is not asking you to use a telephone keypad, a reversed alphabet, or a word-based code.
| Clue letter | Alphabet position | Input digit |
|---|---|---|
| C | 3 | 3 |
| A | 1 | 1 |
| I | 9 | 9 |
| F | 6 | 6 |
Keeping the original order produces the sequence 3-1-9-6. Neoseeker’s Episode 5 walkthrough independently lists the same four digits for the nearby Bridge Ops computer and describes the result as a secret unlock (Neoseeker Episode 5 walkthrough).
A quick way to verify your own calculation is to count forward from A for each letter: C is the third letter, A is the first, I is the ninth, and F is the sixth. Joining those positions without spaces gives 3196. If your result has a different length, one of the letters was probably skipped or reordered.

Clue-only hint versus the full answer
If you want to solve the puzzle yourself, stop after finding the cockpit note. The useful hint is: CAIF consists of four letters whose alphabet positions are entered in the same order. That reveals the method without displaying the final sequence in this section.
For a complete spoiler, the four alphabet positions are 3, 1, 9, and 6. Entering them at the Orbital Scanner Data terminal is the full solution. The clue-only approach is useful if you want to preserve the small deduction while avoiding a search through the room; the full-code approach is faster if you have already inspected the note and simply want to continue.
What should happen after you enter the digits
The consulted walkthroughs characterize a successful entry as unlocking content on the terminal or revealing a secret. They do not establish a large branching decision, a character-state change, or a required progression gate. Treat it as an optional discovery attached to the Bridge Ops computer unless your own game version presents a different on-screen description.
After submitting the digits, allow the terminal interaction to finish before moving away. If the game displays a confirmation or newly available entry, read it there; the cited guides do not specify a universal text string for the unlocked content. The important success check is that the terminal accepts the sequence and exposes the described secret or terminal material.

Why the directions can look inconsistent
Walkthroughs use several names for the same area and interaction. One source calls it the Orbital Scanner Data terminal, another calls it a nearby Bridge Ops computer, and search snippets may describe an Anomaly Log number. These are guide labels, not evidence of multiple codes or a required physical “Anomaly Log” item. The reliable landmarks are the cyan-signed stairs, the wall display, the corridor to the cockpit, and the note beside the chair.
The route is also easy to read backward. The terminal is the place where you enter the answer, but the clue is not on that screen; it is in the cockpit reached through the nearby corridor. Start at the cyan stairs, identify the terminal, walk to the cockpit for CAIF, then retrace your route to enter 3196. Thinking of the sequence as terminal → cockpit clue → terminal prevents a common backtracking mistake.

Troubleshooting the Bridge Ops interaction
The terminal is nowhere to be found
- Confirm that you followed the staircase marked by a cyan sign. The target is upstairs on a wall, not a freestanding device elsewhere in Bridge Ops.
- Look for the words Orbital Scanner Data on the display. Similar-looking equipment is not necessarily the puzzle terminal.
- Use the corridor next to that wall terminal to reach the cockpit; the clue is not in a separate level.
- If you started from the cockpit, retrace the corridor until you reach the upstairs wall display. The terminal and clue are close enough to form one route.
The cockpit note does not seem to provide a code
- Inspect the note beside the chair rather than only looking toward the cockpit controls.
- Read all four letters in order: C, A, I, F. The guides identify the note as the source of the clue.
- Apply A=1, B=2, and so on. Do not convert the letters with a phone keypad, reverse the order, or treat CAIF as a word.
- Write the four positions down before returning to the terminal if the room is busy or the note is easy to overlook.
The terminal rejects the entry
- Return to the terminal that displays Orbital Scanner Data; entering the digits at another computer will not solve this puzzle.
- Check the sequence for transposed digits. The order follows the note from left to right: C, then A, then I, then F.
- Enter only the four digits in the terminal’s input interface. The solution documented by the independent walkthroughs is 3196.
- Make sure the inspection of the note registered before you leave the cockpit. The intended route places the clue beside the chair, not on a distant cockpit monitor.
- If the room layout or interaction differs after a game update, restart the room interaction and consult the current Episode 5 checkpoint. The cited guides reflect their observed game version, and later patches could change presentation details.
The code works but nothing obvious happens
- Wait for the terminal animation, confirmation, or newly displayed entry to finish before moving away.
- Check the terminal again rather than assuming the result is a dramatic cutscene. The documented outcome is terminal content or a secret unlock.
- Do not infer that the puzzle failed merely because no major story branch appears. The walkthroughs do not promise a large narrative consequence.
Common wrong approaches
Looking for a physical key. Nothing in the walkthrough sequence requires a keycard or other pickup. Searching the room for one can make the simple letter conversion seem more complicated than it is.
Entering CAIF directly. The terminal requires the letters’ alphabet positions, not the four-character string itself. C becomes 3, A becomes 1, I becomes 9, and F becomes 6.
Using a phone keypad. Phone-keypad mappings would produce a different pattern and are not the method described by the guides. Count letters from A instead.
Reversing the clue. FAIC would yield a different sequence. The documented order is the order printed on the cockpit note, left to right.
Trying every computer. The target is identified by the Orbital Scanner Data display. Other equipment in Bridge Ops is not established as an alternate input point.
Expecting a progression lock. The sources describe an optional secret or terminal-content unlock, not a required gate for a major branch. If you have completed the code, you can continue the episode without waiting for a larger plot event.
Platform and version context
Directive 8020 has a PlayStation 5 edition listed by PlayStation, but the PlayStation page does not document this particular puzzle (PlayStation game page). The directions above describe the Episode 5 sequence reported by the cited walkthroughs; they are not a platform-specific control scheme. Button prompts can differ by controller and platform, while the room landmarks, clue, and number conversion remain the relevant parts of the solution.
Rank #4
The guides agree on the clue and code, but the Steam page is a player-authored guide rather than official game documentation. GameSpew confirms that the cockpit post-it reads CAIF and directs the player to enter the resulting digits at the panel before going downstairs. Neoseeker confirms 3-1-9-6 for the nearby Bridge Ops computer and identifies the result as a secret. That agreement makes the code dependable while leaving room for minor differences in interface wording or room presentation.
If a later patch changes the location prompt, signage, or terminal animation, use the fixed elements first: cyan stairs, upstairs wall display, cockpit chair note, alphabet positions, and four-digit entry. A changed button prompt does not alter the underlying conversion unless the game explicitly changes the clue.

Product, cost, and equipment questions
The game itself is the only product relevant to this puzzle. A PlayStation 5 edition is listed on PlayStation, but no verified current price, stock status, edition comparison, or marketplace listing is established here. Confirm the platform and edition on the storefront you use rather than relying on an old search result.
No accessory, replacement part, repair tool, consumable, physical guide, toy, model kit, or external decoder is needed. You only need access to the episode and the normal in-game interaction controls. Because the code is supplied by an environmental note, spending money on a guide or add-on does not provide a gameplay advantage beyond saving time.
Quick checklist before leaving Bridge Ops
- You entered Episode 5, “Mr. Williams,” as Josef Cernan.
- You climbed the stairs with the cyan sign.
- You located the upstairs wall terminal labeled Orbital Scanner Data.
- You followed the nearby corridor into the cockpit.
- You inspected the note beside the chair and saw CAIF.
- You converted C, A, I, and F by alphabet position: 3, 1, 9, and 6.
- You returned to the original terminal rather than another Bridge Ops computer.
- You entered 3196 in the original order.
- You allowed the terminal interaction to complete and checked for the secret or newly available content.
Completing those actions opens the terminal’s reported secret content. The walkthrough evidence does not support claiming a larger narrative consequence, so continue the episode based on your own objectives after the terminal interaction.
