The probe serial number is 2540. The damaged displays reveal the sequence as 2-?-4-0. The missing 5 is shown on a third display behind the rocks to the right of the crashed probe. Inspect all three screens, then enter 2540 at the probe’s input panel.
Quick solution
Directive 8020’s probe serial-number puzzle uses three separate visual clues rather than one intact serial label. The screen beside the input panel shows the final “40,” another probe display supplies the leading “2,” and a third display hidden behind rocks on the probe’s right side supplies the missing “5.” Read those fragments in order and enter 2540.

This sequence is the solution reported by PC Gamer’s location guide and corroborated by GameSpew’s walkthrough. If you have found only the 2 and 40, you have not reached the third screen yet; search the rocks immediately to the right of the probe rather than guessing the middle digit.

The serial-number task appears in Episode 7, after you reach the crashed probe. The damaged displays are part of the environment, so the game does not present the complete number on a single readable panel. You must walk around the wreck and inspect separate screens.

In the episode’s objective flow, the code is needed after you replace the overloaded chip and continue the transmission objective. The subsequent objective presents a choice involving whether to send a distress signal or a warning to Earth, as described in the PC Gamer walkthrough. That means the serial-number interaction belongs to the crashed-probe sequence, not to an unrelated early-game keypad or an optional collectible.
Step-by-step walkthrough
1. Reach the crashed probe in Episode 7
Continue the Episode 7 route until the crashed probe becomes the active objective. If the serial-number input is not available, follow the surrounding objective prompts first. The documented sequence places the code interaction after the overloaded chip has been replaced, so arriving at the wreck before that stage may not expose the final prompt.
2. Inspect the screen beside the input panel
Start at the panel where the game asks for the probe’s serial number. Examine the nearby damaged display. Its readable fragment is 40, which establishes the final two positions of the code. Do not treat 40 as the entire answer and do not enter those two digits alone; this is only the trailing fragment.

3. Find the display showing the first digit
Move around the probe and inspect its other visible display. This screen shows 2, the leading digit. At this point the clues form 2-?-4-0. The question mark is deliberate: the middle digit is located on another screen rather than inferred from the two fragments already visible.
4. Search behind the rocks on the probe’s right
From the probe, check the rocks immediately to its right. A third display is tucked behind them and is easy to miss if you stay near the input panel. Inspect that screen to reveal 5. This is the environmental clue that resolves the apparent gap in the number.
5. Assemble the fragments in reading order
Combine the leading 2, the hidden 5, and the trailing 40 without changing their order. The resulting four-digit serial is the number given at the top of this guide. Enter it at the probe’s input panel and confirm the interaction using the game’s on-screen prompt.

How the clue layout works
The displays are fragments, not alternative codes
Each screen contributes part of one serial number. The 2 is not a separate access code, and 40 is not a second attempt. Treating the displays as competing answers leads to unnecessary trial and error. Their positions in the damaged interface indicate a single sequence with one missing section.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe hidden screen supplies the middle digit
The most important navigation detail is the third display behind the rocks. One shorter guide described the middle digit as guesswork after locating only the first and last fragments. A more detailed location account identifies the hidden screen, and the final four-digit answer is independently listed in the GameSpew walkthrough. Searching that spot is therefore preferable to testing random digits.
Use the physical layout to confirm your progress
Before opening the input interaction, you should be able to account for all three observations: one display with 2, one with 40, and the obscured display with 5. If any one of those observations is missing, keep exploring the immediate probe wreck rather than leaving the area. The solution does not require an external item, a replacement component, or a separate tool; the overloaded-chip replacement is part of the story objective, while the number itself comes from inspecting the displays.

Troubleshooting when the code does not work
You can see 2 and 40 but not 5
- Return to the crashed probe and stand on its right-hand side.
- Look behind the nearby rocks, not only along the exposed front of the wreck.
- Move close enough for the hidden display to become readable or interactive.
- Confirm that the screen shows 5 before using the input panel.
The hidden screen is the documented explanation for the missing middle digit. Do not substitute 3, 6, or another guessed value simply because the first and last fragments are visible.
The input prompt is missing
Check the objective order. The walkthrough places the serial-number task after the overloaded chip has been replaced. Complete that repair and return to the probe if the panel is not yet active. Also verify that you are examining the designated input panel rather than a nearby display; the screens provide clues, while the panel accepts the number.

The interaction appears blocked after entering the number
Read the current objective text and follow any confirmation prompt that appears after the digits are entered. The code advances the transmission sequence; it is not the final decision in the episode. Once the probe accepts the serial, continue with the transmission objective and its later distress-signal or warning-to-Earth choice.

What follows the serial-number interaction
Entering the serial lets the crashed-probe sequence continue toward the transmission objective. The code is therefore progression-critical in this section: it is not merely a lore detail or an optional environmental puzzle. After the transmission step, the episode moves toward a consequential communication choice. If you are trying to avoid spoilers, stop exploring the area once the serial is accepted and follow the next objective marker; the important navigation information is limited to the three displays around the probe.
Platform and release context
Supermassive Games’ official Directive 8020 page lists the game for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, and marks it as out now. The Steam listing identifies Supermassive Games as both developer and publisher and gives a release date of May 12, 2026.
| Item | Confirmed detail | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Probe puzzle location | Episode 7, at the crashed probe | PC Gamer |
| Required sequence | After replacing the overloaded chip, during the transmission objective | PC Gamer |
| Platforms | PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC | Supermassive Games |
| Steam release date | May 12, 2026 | Steam |
The platform information does not change the puzzle solution. Whether you are playing on console or PC, the required action is the same environmental inspection: locate the three fragments and enter the assembled serial at the probe panel.

Coverage of this puzzle differs on one practical point. An AltChar guide describes the middle digit as something players may have to guess after finding the visible 2 and 40. The more detailed location description from PC Gamer places a third screen behind rocks to the right of the probe, and GameSpew gives the same completed code used here.
For a clean solution, treat the hidden display as the intended clue. It explains the 5 directly and removes the need for trial-and-error entries. If your version or camera angle makes that display difficult to see, reposition around the right side of the wreck and inspect the rocks from multiple angles before entering anything.
Quick Recap
Quick checklist
- Episode 7 is active and you have reached the crashed probe.
- The overloaded chip has been replaced if the input interaction is not yet available.
- The screen near the input panel shows the trailing 40.
- Another probe display shows the leading 2.
- A third display behind rocks on the probe’s right shows the missing 5.
- The three fragments are entered as one four-digit serial at the input panel.
