Supermassive Games moves The Dark Pictures formula into science fiction aboard the colony ship Cassiopeia, adds direct stealth and real-time alien threats, and gives players a way to revisit major decisions. TechRadar’s PS5 review praises the presentation, performances and more forgiving Turning Points system, while finding some stealth and first-person sections flat, puzzles shallow, and the overall experience less tense than earlier entries.
The result is an attractive branching thriller whose best feature is its flexibility: you can play alone, bring up to four friends into couch co-op, choose whether decisions have permanent consequences, and tailor difficulty and subtitles. The trade-off is that the new mechanics do not always produce the sustained fear the premise promises.

What is Directive 8020?
Directive 8020 is a released sci-fi survival-horror game from Supermassive Games and the latest entry in The Dark Pictures series. Its story takes place on the colony ship Cassiopeia, where an alien organism can mimic its prey. That premise turns every encounter into a question of identity as well as survival: the danger may be an obvious creature, a trusted companion, or something wearing a familiar face.
The game keeps the series’ cinematic presentation, branching narrative and consequential choices, but changes the setting and the moment-to-moment rhythm. Instead of relying almost entirely on scripted scares and quick-time events, it introduces real-time alien threats, stealth, improvised weapons and a decision-rewind feature called Turning Points. Those additions make it more active than a conventional interactive movie, although TechRadar’s PS5 review argues that the extra interaction does not always create more tension.

Release date, platforms and current availability
Directive 8020 launched on May 12, 2026. The announced platforms are PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam.
| Platform | Availability stated by the publisher | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | Released May 12, 2026 | PlayStation’s US product page lists the game in the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog; catalog access can change, so check the current listing in your region. |
| Xbox Series X|S | Released May 12, 2026 | The available launch information confirms the platform, but does not establish a separate Series X versus Series S performance comparison. |
| PC (Steam) | Released May 12, 2026 | Review evidence supplied for this article is from the PS5 version, not a cross-platform test. |
There is no evidence here for a PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch or cloud version. Do not assume that a console edition supports older hardware. Likewise, the launch material described online multiplayer as a post-launch update. Its current status is not established by the available review evidence, so check the in-game menu and the latest platform listing before buying specifically for online play.
The setting: a colony ship where anyone can be copied
Cassiopeia is a useful horror location because it combines the isolation of deep space with the social pressure of a closed community. There is no ordinary town to escape to and no easy way to determine whether a crisis has been contained. The alien organism’s mimicry makes conversations, rescues and separations mechanically important: information is never just background detail when the threat can imitate a person.
Supermassive’s creative director Will Doyle described the move into science fiction as the team’s first use of that setting and said, “We’re incredibly proud of what the team has accomplished, and bringing our storytelling into a sci-fi setting for the first time has been a hugely exciting step.” That is a developer’s promotional perspective rather than an independent verdict, but it explains the design goal: preserve the studio’s character drama while replacing haunted houses and isolated villages with corporate-colony paranoia.
How the gameplay loop works
The core loop alternates between exploration, conversations, investigation and danger. You move through ship environments, make dialogue or action choices, and occasionally enter stealth, pursuit or first-person interaction sequences. A decision can alter who survives, which relationships change and which scenes become available later.

Real-time threats
Earlier Dark Pictures games often telegraphed danger through a cinematic sequence followed by a prompt. Directive 8020 adds threats that unfold in real time. You may need to read an environment, decide whether to hide or move, and react before a creature reaches you. This gives the player more agency than simply waiting for the next button prompt, but it also means the game’s tension depends on how readable and threatening those encounters feel.
Stealth
Stealth is a new emphasis rather than a minor side activity. You can avoid detection, use the environment and choose when to move instead of confronting every danger. TechRadar’s review was not convinced that these sections consistently work: it describes some stealth passages as dull. That criticism matters because stealth scenes interrupt the story’s momentum; when hiding feels like a routine obstacle, the sequence can reduce urgency instead of building it.

Improvised weapons
The game also gives characters improvised weapons. Their presence changes the decision space: fleeing is not always the only response, but fighting is not presented as a conventional action-game solution either. Treat weapons as emergency tools within a survival-horror framework, not as a promise of sustained combat or a power-fantasy progression system.
Puzzles and first-person sections
Investigation and environmental interaction remain part of the formula. TechRadar found some puzzles superficial and some first-person sections awkward. Players who enjoy story consequences more than elaborate puzzle design will likely tolerate that unevenness; anyone expecting a deep systemic mystery game should lower expectations.
Turning Points: the major choice rewind
Turning Points is the feature that most changes how the campaign feels. It lets you revisit certain story decisions instead of accepting the original branch permanently. TechRadar regarded the system as more forgiving than the series’ previous approach, because a failed choice does not necessarily force you to replay the entire story to see another outcome.

The feature is tied to the selected playstyle:
| Playstyle | How choices work | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Explorer | Turning Points are enabled, allowing eligible decisions to be revisited. | Players who want to explore branches, recover from an unwanted outcome or experience the narrative with less risk. |
| Survivor | The no-second-chances approach is preserved; consequential mistakes remain consequential. | Players who want the most pressure and are comfortable living with deaths and irreversible decisions. |
Explorer is not simply an easier difficulty setting. It changes the relationship between the player and the story: a decision can be tested, reconsidered and used to investigate alternate scenes. Survivor protects the series’ traditional dramatic stakes. Choose before starting if you know whether you value narrative completeness or the anxiety of permanent loss.

Solo play and local multiplayer
Solo campaign
You can play the entire story alone. Solo is the clearest way to follow character arcs and make decisions without negotiating with other players. It is also the mode that best suits Survivor, because every consequence belongs to one person and the game’s pacing is not interrupted by discussion.
Couch co-op for up to five players
The publisher says couch co-op supports up to five players. That makes it a natural choice for a group that wants to treat the campaign like an interactive horror screening: people can share control, debate choices and react together when the organism appears. The available information confirms the five-player local limit, but does not specify the exact controller assignment or whether every scene divides characters evenly. Check the current in-game setup screen for those details.
Online multiplayer
At launch, online multiplayer was described as a post-launch update rather than a confirmed launch feature. Because the supplied evidence does not verify that the update is live now, do not buy on the assumption that online co-op is available. Look for an online mode in the current version and confirm platform-specific requirements before inviting remote players.
What TechRadar’s PS5 review praises
The principal strengths identified by TechRadar are the game’s visual presentation, performances and willingness to refine the established formula. The PS5 review describes an evolution rather than a total reinvention: the cinematic structure remains recognizable, but the science-fiction setting gives the production a different visual language and the cast’s performances carry the character drama.
Rank #4
The review also treats the reduction in quick-time events as a positive change. Fewer QTEs can leave more room for observation, conversation and deliberate choices instead of making every tense scene a test of reaction speed. Combined with Turning Points, that makes the campaign more approachable for players who like branching stories but dislike losing hours to one missed prompt.
For newcomers, this combination is the strongest argument for starting with Directive 8020. You do not need to know the plots of earlier Dark Pictures entries to understand a colony-ship story, and Explorer mode gives you room to learn the consequences system without committing to every mistake.
Where the review finds problems
TechRadar’s reservations are concentrated in the areas added to make the game more interactive. Some stealth and first-person sequences are described as dull or awkward, and puzzles are characterized as superficial. Those are not isolated cosmetic complaints: they affect the middle portions of the experience, where a cinematic horror game must maintain momentum between major story scenes.
The review also reports an awkward decision tree. Branching narratives need to communicate enough information for a choice to feel meaningful without revealing the future. If the structure is difficult to read, players may feel that an outcome was arbitrary rather than earned. Turning Points soften that frustration in Explorer mode, but they do not eliminate the underlying complexity.

The alien mimic premise is strong, yet real-time sections can become less frightening when their patterns are easy to read or when stealth turns into a routine wait. The result is better described as a cinematic sci-fi survival thriller with horror elements than as an unbroken escalation of fear.

PS5 features, accessibility and technical options
PlayStation’s product information highlights features for PS5 players beyond the basic story content. Buyers can compare controller and audio features, subtitles, adjustable difficulty and offline pause support before choosing an edition.
- Controller feedback: the PS5 version includes platform-specific controller features; check the console’s current product listing for the exact implementation and settings.
- Audio: PS5 audio support is listed as a feature, which may matter if you play with headphones or a compatible surround setup.
- Subtitles: subtitle support is available, making spoken story information easier to follow for players who need or prefer text.
- Adjustable difficulty: you can tailor the challenge rather than treating the default setting as the only option.
- Offline pause: the PS5 listing identifies offline pause support, useful for a story game that may otherwise demand uninterrupted attention.
PlayStation Blog coverage also discusses PS5 Pro rendering enhancements involving PSSR and ray tracing. The evidence establishes enhanced rendering features for the Pro version, but not a measured frame-rate comparison with the base PS5, Xbox Series consoles or PC. Choose PS5 Pro for the listed image-quality enhancements if you own the hardware; do not infer a universal performance advantage without a platform-specific test.

Is Directive 8020 worth playing?
Choose it if you want a self-contained Dark Pictures story with a fresh science-fiction setting, strong production values and enough choice control to support either experimentation or high-stakes play. Explorer mode is particularly useful for a first run with friends, while Survivor is the better fit for a group that wants arguments, surprises and permanent consequences.
Approach it cautiously if your priority is relentless fear, intricate puzzles or polished stealth. TechRadar’s PS5 review specifically identifies those areas as weaker than the game’s visuals and performances. The game’s strongest scenes are the ones where character relationships and uncertainty about the mimic converge; its weaker stretches are the connective sections that ask you to hide, inspect or solve something without delivering equal dramatic pressure.
A practical first-playthrough plan
- Pick your platform based on your setup. The game is available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam. If you are considering PS5 Plus Game Catalog access, verify that the title is still included in your region before relying on the subscription.
- Decide whether the campaign is social. Use couch co-op for a group of up to five. For remote friends, confirm that the post-launch online mode is present in your current version before scheduling a session.
- Select Explorer or Survivor deliberately. Explorer prioritizes branch discovery and recovery from unwanted outcomes. Survivor preserves the traditional no-reset pressure.
- Set subtitles and difficulty before the opening sequence. This avoids interrupting the cinematic flow and lets each player settle on a readable challenge level.
- During stealth, observe before moving. Real-time threats reward patience more than treating every encounter as a chase. If a section feels repetitive, remember that the review’s criticism concerns the design itself, not a hidden requirement to play aggressively.
- Keep track of decisions. The decision tree can become awkward to read. Note major choices if you intend to use Turning Points to compare outcomes rather than relying on memory.
- Use Turning Points with a purpose. In Explorer, rewind to examine a meaningful branch or recover a result you genuinely did not want. Constantly undoing every risk can remove the uncertainty that makes the story work.
Bottom line for different readers
For Dark Pictures followers
This is an evolution of the formula, not a replacement for it. The familiar branching structure remains, while science-fiction world-building, real-time threats and stealth broaden the range of scenes. Expect improved presentation and a more forgiving way to see alternate outcomes, but not uniformly stronger scares.
For science-fiction horror newcomers
The Cassiopeia setting and mimic organism provide a clear entry point. You can start without previous series knowledge, play solo or locally with friends, and choose how punishing the narrative should be. Explorer is the sensible first choice if you want to understand the characters and branching system before committing to Survivor.
For puzzle and stealth specialists
Temper expectations. The available review praises the cinematic elements but criticizes some stealth, first-person and puzzle sections. Buy for the story, performances and group decision-making rather than for deep stealth systems or elaborate environmental riddles.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor PS5 Pro owners
The platform has the clearest documented feature set, including controller and audio support, accessibility options and PS5 Pro rendering enhancements using PSSR and ray tracing. Those are presentation reasons to choose the platform, not proof of a specific frame-rate advantage over other versions.
