Its conversations, eccentric cast and skill-driven choices make Revachol a remarkable place to investigate; its deliberate pace and sheer volume of dialogue ask you to settle in rather than chase constant action. If a story-led RPG sounds appealing, the writing and role-playing are worth that commitment.
What playing Disco Elysium involves
You play a detective investigating a murder in Revachol, a city marked by political conflict and personal ruin. The case gives you a reason to question residents and explore, but the investigation is also a way to decide who your detective is. Conversations, skill choices and dice checks shape what you notice, what you say and how other people respond. Steam describes the game as a role-playing game built around a unique skill system and an explorable city; a review by MeriStation describes dialogue outcomes being decided by dice checks.

That structure makes conversation the central activity, not a break between action sequences. Your detective’s skills give the inner life of the character a voice, sometimes steering attention or coloring an exchange. Choices feel less like selecting a universally correct response and more like committing to a particular temperament, belief or impulse. The pleasure is seeing how that version of the detective handles the next person and the next complication.
Writing and characterization carry the investigation
The game’s greatest strength is how much personality it gives to conversations. Revachol’s residents are not simply clues arranged around a murder; they have their own needs, defenses and contradictions. The writing can move between dark humor, political argument and genuine vulnerability without making the setting feel like a collection of unrelated jokes. Even detours can be rewarding because they deepen the sense that the city existed before the detective arrived.

#1 Best Overall
- Disco Elysium - The Final Cut is the definitive edition of the groundbreaking role playing game
- Interrogate unforgettable characters, crack murders, or take bribes
- Become a hero or an absolute disaster of a human being - it's all up to you
- Countless tools for roleplaying, a revolutionary dialog system, and an unprecedented freedom of choice found in the base game
- Adds new quests, and for the first time is fully voice acted
The setting’s mixture of influences is deliberate. In a December 10, 2020 PlayStation.Blog announcement, ZA/UM writer Chris Priestman described it as “disco music, early motor carriages, and post-revolutionary angst,” brought to life “with actual oil paintings.” That is the studio’s own description, but it captures the game’s unusual blend of faded glamour, history and hand-painted atmosphere.
How skills, choices and dice checks create agency
Role-playing here is less about building a combat specialist than deciding what kind of mind is driving the investigation. Skills inform the detective’s perspective and can influence the course of a conversation or a check. A roll can open a possibility or shut one down, but a failed check is not necessarily an automatic dead end: ZA/UM’s announcement presents failure as part of the experience rather than a reason the story must stop. The uncertainty gives exchanges tension, while the surrounding writing makes the outcome matter beyond a simple pass-or-fail result.
This is a game for players comfortable with imperfect control. You cannot make every encounter go the way you want, and the most revealing result may be an awkward or disastrous one. That makes choices feel expressive, but it also means players seeking a tightly optimized path or frequent mechanical victories may find the rhythm frustrating.
What The Final Cut adds
The Final Cut adds political vision quests, new characters, an additional area, controller support and expanded language options. The most immediately noticeable addition is full voice acting: the conversations that define the game can be heard rather than read silently, which gives its cast and long stretches of dialogue another way to hold attention.
Priestman wrote in the December 10, 2020 announcement that the game had “full voice-acting for every character,” following hundreds of hours in the recording studio. ZA/UM also described “over 150,000 words” added in new quests. That figure refers to added quest text, not a count of the total script or a measure of playtime. The political quests and extra area extend the game’s existing interest in ideology and identity; they are most appealing if you want more of that material, rather than a faster or more action-oriented experience.
ZA/UM announced that existing owners would receive the Final Cut upgrade at no additional cost in 2020. That was the policy stated at the time, not a guarantee about every store transaction today. Steam calls the release “the definitive edition of the groundbreaking role playing game”; “definitive” is the store’s product-page description, not a separate critical verdict.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the slow, text-heavy pace for you?
Expect long conversations, close attention to wording and stretches of reflection. Voice acting can make the reading less solitary, but it does not turn the game into a brisk, action-led adventure. Its pace suits players who enjoy listening to people, considering what a response says about their character and following a line of thought even when it wanders. If you mainly want combat, frequent movement or short dialogue exchanges, the same emphasis will feel like friction.
The game supports controllers, and platform listings specify different language options. On the US PlayStation listing, English is identified for voiceover and screen languages are listed separately, with options varying between PS4 and PS5. Steam also enumerates interface, audio and subtitle availability by language. Check the listing for your platform and region if a particular language matters; a listed screen language should not be taken to mean that language has full voice acting.

Official listings verify Windows on Steam, PS4 and PS5 on PlayStation, and Xbox availability with Series X|S optimization and Smart Delivery. Spike Chunsoft’s Japanese product page lists Switch, PS4 and PS5; it gives August 25, 2022 as the Japanese Switch and PlayStation release date and states that Spike Chunsoft’s own handling has ended. In a review updated May 6, 2021, MeriStation called the PS5 controller adaptation comfortable but reported crashes and interface issues around launch that the reviewer said they had not encountered after patch 1.4. This is one reviewer’s historical report about the PS5 version; it does not establish the state of the current build or performance on other platforms. No reliable current cross-platform performance statistic or independent playtime figure is established here.
Verdict: a standout for readers who want to live inside a story
Disco Elysium: The Final Cut is compelling because its writing, characters and skill system make the detective’s inner life part of the investigation. The voice acting and added quests reinforce that strength, while the slow, dialogue-first structure remains a real preference test. Choose it for an unusual, reflective role-playing experience and the chance to shape a flawed detective through conversation; look elsewhere if you want the murder case delivered mainly through action.
