It does not prove that Steam is down. Check Steam Server Status and Activision’s Warzone Known Issues page first, then test your connection with a router restart and a direct Ethernet connection. That sequence quickly separates a service outage from a wireless, firewall, or game-specific problem.
Warzone is an online, free-to-play PC title released on Steam on November 16, 2022. Activision handles Warzone support; Steam supplies platform and network diagnostics. The steps below follow that division and avoid treating one local setting as a universal fix.

What “Disconnected from Steam” means
Warzone maintains several sessions at once: the game client must reach Activision’s services, Steam must keep its platform session alive, and your computer must maintain a stable route through the router and internet service. A break in any layer can produce the same message.
The wording is therefore a symptom, not a diagnosis. A brief wireless drop, a router interruption, a firewall rule, a Steam-side incident, an Activision outage, or a problem introduced by a recent update can all look identical in-game. Official support does not publish one root cause, success rate, or permanent fix that applies to every occurrence.

Start with service status, not reinstalls
Check Steam Server Status
Open Steam’s official server-status information and look for an outage or regional degradation. If Steam services are unavailable, changing graphics options, reinstalling Warzone, or replacing a cable on your desk cannot restore the platform session. Wait for the service to recover and test again.
Check Activision’s Warzone Known Issues
Review the Known Issues page in Activision’s Warzone support hub. The hub also groups guidance under Installation and Setup, Connecting to a Warzone Game, Crashes or Game Freezes, and Improving Lag and In-game Performance. A listed incident or update-related defect is evidence to preserve for support rather than a reason to make increasingly invasive local changes.
Five-minute recovery procedure
- Quit cleanly. Leave the match, exit Warzone, and close Steam from its menu. Reopen Steam only after the game process has ended. This establishes a fresh platform session without changing files or settings.
- Restart the network equipment. Power off the router, wait for it to finish shutting down, then power it back on and allow its internet connection to return. Restart the PC afterward. A restart can clear a temporary router state, but it is not proof that the router is the long-term cause.
- Run a direct wired test. Connect the PC to the router with Ethernet and play or remain in Warzone long enough to reproduce the problem. Steam’s network FAQ specifically recommends testing with a direct wired connection when possible.
- Compare the result. If the wired session remains connected while Wi-Fi fails, the likely fault is the local wireless link, interference, signal quality, or a powerline adapter. If both wired and wireless connections fail at the same point, continue with Steam, firewall, service-status, and Activision checks.
- Record the timing. Note whether the disconnect occurs at launch, while joining a lobby, after a map loads, or randomly during a match. Also record whether it began after a Warzone or Steam update. Timing gives support a useful pattern instead of a generic “it disconnects” report.
Use the Ethernet test to isolate your home network
A Cat6 Ethernet cable is a practical diagnostic accessory if your PC and router are in different rooms. Use it to establish a stable baseline, not as a guaranteed Warzone fix. Keep the result: “wired stable, Wi-Fi disconnects” points toward the local link; “wired also disconnects” points elsewhere.

If wired works
- Continue using Ethernet for competitive sessions when possible.
- Move the wireless access point away from dense obstructions and sources of interference.
- Test without a powerline adapter or wireless bridge if one sits between the PC and router.
- Compare another online game on the same Wi-Fi connection. A second game failing at the same time strengthens the local-network explanation.
If wired also fails
Do not assume the cable or graphics hardware is responsible. Proceed to firewall and security-software checks, then compare the failure with Steam status and Activision’s Known Issues page. A stable wired link rules out many local wireless problems, but it does not rule out the router, internet provider, Steam, or Warzone services.
Check firewall and security software
Steam’s official network guidance includes firewall troubleshooting. Review the rules in Windows Firewall and any third-party security suite for Steam and Warzone. The objective is to ensure that the current Steam and game executables are allowed to communicate on the networks you actually use.
- Look for duplicate or outdated rules left by an older installation or update.
- Check whether a security product is blocking the game immediately after an executable changed.
- Do not disable protection permanently. If you perform a short diagnostic test, re-enable protection and create a narrow, appropriate allow rule instead.
- After changing a rule, restart Steam and Warzone so both applications create a fresh connection.
If the game works only while security software is disabled, treat that as evidence of a rule conflict, not a final solution. Restore protection and ask the security vendor or Activision support for a safe exception procedure for your installation.

Separate a Steam problem from a Warzone problem
Steam itself disconnects
If the Steam client loses its store, friends, or other online functions at the same time as Warzone, investigate Steam status and Steam’s network diagnostics first. Test another online Steam game if you have one installed. A platform-wide failure should be allowed to resolve rather than “fixed” by changing Warzone files.

When Steam stays connected and other Steam games remain stable, the problem is more specific to Warzone’s connection, its services, or an interaction with a recent update. Use Activision’s connection-support route and bug-reporting route. Include the exact message and the timing, not just a screenshot.
Only one region or time window is affected
Record your country or service region and the local time of each failure. Regional service degradation can affect matchmaking or authentication without taking every Steam feature offline. Do not generalize a regional symptom into a global outage.

What to report to Activision
Activision is the escalation path for Warzone-specific failures. A useful report contains:
- The exact text: “Disconnected from Steam.”
- Platform: PC through Steam.
- Your region and approximate time zone.
- Whether the error appears at launch, matchmaking, loading, or during a match.
- Whether it started after a named Warzone or Steam update.
- Whether Steam’s other online functions and other Steam games stay connected.
- Whether a direct Ethernet test was stable or failed in the same way.
- Whether restarting the router and reviewing firewall rules changed the behavior.
These details let support compare your report with known incidents and reproduce the correct stage of the connection. Avoid claiming that a workaround is universal when it helped only one PC or one network.
Warzone PC requirements and what they do not prove
Steam lists the following baseline requirements for Warzone. They describe whether the PC meets the product’s published platform baseline; they do not guarantee that a network disconnect will be resolved.

Meeting these figures helps rule out an unsupported configuration, but a PC can satisfy every requirement and still lose its Steam or Warzone session. Conversely, a disconnect that began immediately after an update should be reported with the update timing rather than attributed automatically to RAM, graphics, or storage.

Why reinstalling is usually a poor first response
A reinstall changes local game files, but the “Disconnected from Steam” message can originate from a service outage, a router path, Wi-Fi interference, or a firewall rule. Reinstalling therefore cannot address several likely layers and may consume substantial time and storage. Status checks and the wired comparison produce more diagnostic information while leaving your installation intact.
Consider more invasive file or system changes only when Activision or Steam support identifies a specific local corruption or installation problem. Keep the original error timing and network-test results so those changes can be evaluated rather than performed blindly.

Intermittent disconnects are easier to diagnose as a pattern than as isolated incidents. Keep a short log with the date, time, match stage, connection type, and whether Steam’s other features worked. Mark each attempt after a router restart or firewall change. A pattern limited to Wi-Fi, a particular time window, or one update gives support actionable evidence.
Do not confuse a single boot-time login failure with a mid-match drop. Authentication failures implicate the initial platform or service handshake; mid-match drops emphasize the continuing network path. Both can display similar wording, so the stage belongs in every report.
Bottom-line decision path
- Check Steam Server Status and Activision’s Warzone Known Issues.
- Restart the router and PC, then test Warzone over direct Ethernet.
- Use the wired-versus-Wi-Fi result to isolate local wireless or powerline trouble.
- Review firewall and security-software rules without leaving protection disabled.
- If Steam remains healthy but Warzone alone disconnects, report the case to Activision with platform, region, update timing, and test results.
There is no officially documented single permanent fix for every “Disconnected from Steam” case. This sequence identifies the failing layer with the fewest unnecessary changes and gives the appropriate support team the evidence it needs.
