That is the most direct workaround for this symptom. The documented Discord community reports date to October 8–9, 2021; they do not establish a new Discord-wide outage. What the Discord 404 over a game means
A Discord-branded 404 page covering the game is most consistent with a failure in Discord’s in-game overlay, rather than a normal VALORANT error code. The overlay is Discord’s interface displayed over a game; Discord advises disabling it for a game if it causes lag, crashes, or other problems. The number 404 alone does not show that VALORANT’s servers are down or that game files are missing.
Discord community members reported this full-screen symptom while launching games, including VALORANT and Call of Duty, in posts dated October 8–9, 2021. Some said turning off the overlay resolved it. Those are user reports, not an official diagnosis or evidence of a current incident: full-screen overlay report, VALORANT and Call of Duty report, and overlay 404 report.
VALORANT is a documented example, not the only possible one. Similar reports name other games, but no universal affected-game list is established; behavior can vary with the Discord client, game renderer, display mode, and configuration. A Riot VAN or VAL error is a separate game or anti-cheat issue and should be investigated through Riot VALORANT Support.

Turn off Discord Game Overlay first
- In Discord, click the gear icon beside your username to open User Settings.
- Open Overlay and turn off Enable Overlay or Enable in-game overlay. If Discord shows a per-game overlay switch, turn it off for VALORANT or the affected game; otherwise use the global switch.
- Quit Discord completely, close the game, reopen Discord, and launch the game again.
Discord’s menu wording can vary by client version or release channel. Its current Game Overlay guide recommends disabling the overlay for the affected game when it interferes with gameplay. Users who reported the 404 also said disabling it helped, though that does not prove the underlying cause.
With the overlay off, you lose its in-game chat, notifications, voice controls, and overlay-based screen-sharing controls. You can still join a Discord voice channel before launching the game and use Discord outside the overlay.
If you want to keep the overlay enabled
Try windowed or borderless mode
Switch the game from true exclusive fullscreen to windowed or borderless windowed mode, then test the overlay again. Discord recommends those modes when troubleshooting overlay problems. Its known-issue page distinguishes borderless fullscreen from true fullscreen: the revamped overlay is intended for windowed and borderless modes, not true fullscreen.

Use legacy overlay only as a fallback
If your Discord client offers Enable legacy overlay under User Settings > Game Overlay, you can test it as a compatibility fallback. Availability varies, and Discord warns that this option may eventually be removed. It is not the first fix to try.

If the 404 continues after turning off overlay
Fully close and restart Discord
Closing the Discord window may leave its background processes running. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, end Discord processes, close the game, and then reopen Discord before launching the game. Update the apps and check for an outage
Restart Discord to let it check for client updates, update VALORANT through Riot Client, and restart Windows if an update changed relevant components. An update is a sensible check, not a confirmed fix for this particular 404. If Discord is also failing outside games or the problem affects multiple Discord features, check Discord Status. For game-specific outages, use Riot Games Service Status.

Clear Discord’s local data or reinstall only as a later step
Discord’s troubleshooting guide includes clearing cache or local application data for relevant loading and installation problems. On Windows, the relevant locations include %appdata%discord and %localappdata%Discord.
- Quit Discord completely in Task Manager.
- Back up any information or settings you need to preserve.
- Remove only Discord’s local cache or application remnants; these folders contain local app data.
- Reinstall Discord from its official download page, sign in, and test with the overlay disabled first.
Reinstalling VALORANT is not a proportionate first response to a Discord overlay page. Consider game repair only if Riot Client reports a separate game-file problem.

If Discord has loading or asset errors outside the game too, check whether a VPN, proxy, firewall, or antivirus is blocking Discord. Discord’s console-log troubleshooting guide covers network and security-software checks for certain loading errors, but does not establish them as the cause of this overlay-specific 404.

- Temporarily disconnect a VPN or proxy to see whether behavior changes.
- Check that Discord is allowed through the firewall; do not leave firewall or antivirus protection disabled.
- If practical, test a different network to isolate a connection issue, then restore your usual settings.
Send Discord useful diagnostic details
If the overlay itself crashes a game, Discord’s overlay guide describes collecting the hook log from a version-specific folder under %appdata%discord .0.***highest-number***modulesdiscord_hookhook. The numbered folder differs between installations. Include the Discord version and release channel, Windows version, game and display mode, whether the problem occurs only with overlay enabled, and a screenshot or recording. Note whether disabling the overlay resolves the symptom.
Platform and compatibility notes
Discord documents Game Overlay as a Windows feature compatible with Windows 10 and 11; it does not function on Mac or Linux. If you are on those platforms, these Windows overlay steps do not apply. Discord also notes that overlay reliability has faced compatibility challenges, so an overlay failure should not be treated as proof that the game itself is broken.

Is Riot Vanguard confirmed to cause this 404?
No. The available Discord documentation and user reports do not establish Vanguard as the cause of this overlay symptom.
Will reinstalling VALORANT fix a Discord overlay 404?
There is no evidence that reinstalling VALORANT is the right fix for a Discord-branded overlay page. Reserve game repair for separate errors reported by Riot Client.
