What are Discord server boosts, what do they unlock, and are they worth it? A Server Boost is a recurring digital entitlement that a member assigns to a Discord server. Boosts pool together to unlock server-wide levels, while some optional perks consume their own separate boosts. Discord’s published level thresholds are 2 boosts for Level 1, 7 for Level 2 and 14 for Level 3. Whether paying for them makes sense depends on the features your community will actually use, your local recurring price and whether you already receive boosts through Nitro.
What a Discord Server Boost actually is
A Server Boost is not a one-time purchase that permanently upgrades a server. It is an ongoing entitlement attached to a member’s account and applied to a server. The server’s total active boosts are pooled, and that pool determines which level benefits the community can use. Discord Support describes the system this way: each boost given to a server helps collectively unlock perks for everyone in that server.

Because the entitlement is recurring, the benefits depend on members continuing to allocate boosts. If enough boosts are removed, the server can fall below a level threshold or lose an optional perk. A boost can be moved to another server, but Discord imposes a seven-day cooldown after it is used, so members cannot switch boosts freely every day.

A server with ten boosts therefore does not automatically have every feature available below ten; administrators must decide how to divide those ten allocations.

What each server level unlocks
The following are Discord’s listed entitlements. They describe what a level unlocks, not a guarantee that every member will experience a measurable performance improvement. Some features can also have platform, account or server-availability limits.

Level 1: a small community’s baseline upgrade
Two boosts unlock the first expansion of a server’s identity and content capacity. The extra emoji, sticker and soundboard slots matter most to communities that already use those collections heavily. The animated icon and custom invite background are presentation features, while 720p/60 fps Go Live and 128 Kbps audio establish the first published media tier.
Level 2: the most substantial capacity jump
Seven boosts are needed for Level 2. The notable practical changes are 1080p/60 fps Go Live, 256 Kbps audio, a 50 MB upload limit for every member, a larger Stage audience and custom role icons. The level also expands the emoji, sticker and soundboard caps and adds a static server banner. If your community regularly shares files or streams games, these limits are usually more relevant than cosmetic additions.

Level 3 requires 14 boosts. It raises the upload limit to 100 MB for all members, increases Stage audience capacity to 300, raises audio to 384 Kbps and adds the largest published emoji, sticker and soundboard capacities. It also unlocks an animated server banner and a custom invite link. A server must keep all 14 level allocations in place to retain those benefits.
Additional perks use a separate boost budget
Discord lists optional perks that are allocated separately from server levels. Each of the following requires its own boosts:

These allocations are independent. For example, ten total boosts could be assigned as seven to Level 2 and three to Server Tags, or two to Level 1 plus three each to Server Tags and Enhanced Role Styles, leaving two unassigned. The second arrangement does not create Level 2 because only two boosts are funding the level. Administrators choose priorities in the Server Boosts interface, and Discord says new boosts are automatically applied toward a level when enough are available.

The additional-perk settings described in Discord’s FAQ are configured on desktop. Experimental perks should not be treated as guaranteed simply because a server has the required number; access is restricted to selected servers.
How to apply and manage boosts
- Open the Discord server you want to support and enter its Server Boosts area.
- Choose an available boost from your account or purchase an additional boost through Discord’s checkout, then confirm the server allocation.
- Check the server’s level meter and separate perk allocations. A level threshold and an optional perk must each have their own required boosts.
- If you are an administrator, use the Server Boosts interface to reallocate boosts when the community’s priorities change. Review the resulting level and perk status before confirming.
- For optional perks whose controls are desktop-only, complete the configuration in Discord’s desktop app or desktop web experience.
Discord’s interface can change over time, so the exact button wording may differ by platform. The important distinction is that applying a boost and assigning it to a level or optional perk are related but separate allocation decisions.
Nitro, direct boosts or no purchase?
Discord’s subscription benefits make the cost decision more complicated than comparing one boost with zero boosts. Nitro includes two Server Boosts that you can apply to servers and a 30% discount on future boost purchases. Discord’s documentation also states that Nitro Classic subscribers receive a 30% boost discount. Nitro Basic includes neither Server Boosts nor a boost discount.

Discord uses localized pricing in selected regions, and the eligible price can depend on region and payment method. Subscription prices can also differ between monthly and annual billing. There is no universal price that can be responsibly quoted for every reader; check the price shown in your own Discord account and checkout channel.

When Server Boosts are worth it
Boosts are easiest to justify when a specific limitation is affecting an active community. Start with the desired outcome rather than the badge or level number.

- Worth considering for streaming communities: The published Go Live ceilings rise to 720p/60 fps at Level 1 and 1080p/60 fps at Level 2. Stage audience capacity also increases at Levels 2 and 3.
- Worth considering for audio-focused servers: The listed audio tiers are 128 Kbps, 256 Kbps and 384 Kbps at Levels 1, 2 and 3 respectively.
- Worth considering for identity and expression: Large emoji, sticker and soundboard collections, animated branding, role icons, Server Tags or Enhanced Role Styles may be central to a community’s culture.
- Usually not worth adding immediately: If members rarely upload files, stream, use custom media or attend Stages, paying to reach a higher level may produce little practical value.
Evaluate ongoing use, not a one-week launch event. A server that needs Level 2 for a recurring tournament or weekly stream has a clearer case than one that wants a banner once and then stops using the unlocked capacity.
A practical value test before you subscribe
- Name the exact feature. Write down “50 MB uploads,” “1080p/60 fps Go Live,” “Server Tags” or another concrete entitlement instead of “better Discord.”
- Calculate the allocation. Determine the level threshold and add any separate boosts required for optional perks. Seven boosts for Level 2 plus three for Server Tags means ten allocations, not seven.
- Check what you already have. Nitro may already provide two boosts. Nitro Basic provides none, and a 30% discount only matters if you will buy additional boosts.
- Check your local recurring price. Use the price displayed in your account, including the chosen billing period and payment channel. Do not compare an unverified US price with a localized checkout.
- Test sustainability. Identify who will keep the allocations active. If one member supplies most of the boosts, plan for what happens if that person cancels or moves them.
- Confirm availability. Treat Larger File Uploads and Server Themes as experiments, and remember that some optional-perk controls are desktop-only.
What happens when boosts move or stop?
Moving a boost to another server
After applying a boost, Discord requires a seven-day cooldown before it can be transferred. Moving it can reduce the original server below a level threshold or leave an optional perk without enough dedicated boosts. Check the allocation consequences before transferring.
When a server drops below a level
Discord provides a 72-hour grace period after a server falls below a level threshold. During that window, the level perks can become temporarily invalid; if the server regains the threshold, they can become valid again. This grace period applies to level benefits, not every boost-funded feature.
Custom invite links
If a server loses the level that provides its custom invite link, Discord says the link is lost and becomes available to other servers after 30 days. A community that depends on a printed or widely shared invite should account for this risk before reallocating boosts.

Additional perks can switch off immediately
Optional perks are stricter: Discord says they are disabled immediately when their required boosts are removed or reallocated. Do not assume the 72-hour level grace period protects Server Tags, Enhanced Role Styles or another separately funded perk.
Do not confuse server grace with a personal streak
Discord also documents a separate personal boosting streak. If a boost stops for certain listed reasons, the member has 72 hours to apply boosts to another server to retain that streak. That rule concerns the member’s streak, while the server grace period concerns level perks; they are different timers with different consequences.
Limits, dates and availability to keep in mind

- Discord’s Nitro and Nitro Basic information was updated September 29, 2026.
- A temporary promotion mentioned in the September 14 FAQ ran from September 14 through September 21, 2026 and has expired; it should not be treated as a current discount.
- Localized prices are account- and region-dependent, so verify checkout immediately before subscribing.
- Feature availability can vary by platform, experiment status and server selection. In particular, experimental perks are not guaranteed for every server with the nominal boost count.
Bottom line: are Discord Server Boosts worth it?
Server Boosts are worth paying for when a community has a defined, recurring need for the unlocked upload, streaming, audio, capacity or identity features and can maintain the required allocations. Level 2 at seven boosts is often the key decision point for streaming and file-sharing groups, while Level 3 at 14 boosts is a commitment to the largest published limits and branding options. Optional perks such as Server Tags and Enhanced Role Styles must be budgeted separately.
They are less compelling when the server rarely uses those features, when a boost would be funded by one member who may leave, or when the local recurring price exceeds the value the community places on the unlocks. Check your account’s current price, count any Nitro-included boosts, verify experimental availability and plan for the seven-day transfer cooldown before committing.
