Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Send a short /tts test, then check User Settings > App Settings > Accessibility, User Settings > Notifications > Text-to-Speech, your channel permissions, output device, and mute/deafen state. If the desktop app and browser behave differently, the speech engine—not necessarily the command—is the likely dividing line.
Start with a controlled test
Use a channel where you can send messages and type /tts test. Discord documents /tts as the command that asks Discord to read the following sentence aloud. Keep the test short so you can distinguish a missing announcement from a delayed or hard-to-hear one.

- If you hear the word “test,” the command and basic playback path work; the problem is more likely a notification scope, a particular channel, or the original message.
- If the message appears but there is no voice, continue through the settings and audio checks below.
- If you cannot send the message, this is a channel, role, or account-permission problem rather than a speech-engine problem.
Do not use a long sentence, a busy voice channel, or a game at full volume for the first test. You need a quiet, repeatable signal before changing several variables at once.

Discord has two separate decisions that are easy to confuse. The Accessibility control determines whether TTS playback and use of the command are allowed at all. The Notifications control determines which messages are eligible for notification-style speech. A permissive value in one area does not override a blocking value in the other.

Explicit /tts playback
When you type /tts before a sentence, Discord requests spoken playback for that message. Discord’s support guidance says playback can be disabled at User Settings > App Settings > Accessibility by turning off “Allow playback and usage of /tts command.” If that option is disabled, a correctly formatted command can still appear as text while producing no speech.
Notification text-to-speech
Under User Settings > Notifications > Text-to-Speech, Discord provides a scope choice: all channels, the currently selected channel, or Never. “Never” suppresses notification TTS even when other audio works. A selected-channel setting can make the feature appear broken when you test in a different channel.
Fix Discord TTS in the correct order
1. Verify the Accessibility playback switch and rate
- Open Discord and select the gear icon for User Settings.
- Under App Settings, open Accessibility.
- Confirm that “Allow playback and usage of /tts command” is enabled.
- Find the Text-to-Speech rate slider. Set it to a comfortable middle position rather than an extreme value while testing.
- Press Preview. This tests Discord’s speech output without relying on a channel message.
If Preview is silent, do not troubleshoot message formatting yet. The failure is inside the playback setting or the audio route. If Preview speaks but /tts test does not, move to notification scope and permissions.

- Game for Hours in Comfort. Everything about these headphones is about comfort: The deluxe lightweight leatherette ear cups and headband are made to keep pressure off your ears. Ear cups rotate up to 90 degrees for convenience.
2. Set the notification TTS scope
- Return to User Settings.
- Open Notifications.
- Locate Text-to-Speech.
- Choose All channels for a broad test, or choose the channel you are actively testing.
- Do not leave the setting at Never if you expect notification speech.
After changing the scope, send a new /tts test. Existing messages are not a reliable way to confirm a newly changed notification setting.
3. Check channel and role permissions
Discord can prevent the command from functioning in one channel while it works elsewhere. Confirm that your role can send messages in the test channel and that no channel-specific override removes the relevant messaging permission. If a server moderator has restricted the channel, changing a personal TTS switch will not restore access.
Also check whether you are muted or deafened. Discord lists mute and deafen status among its initial audio checks; a deafened client can suppress sounds you would otherwise expect to hear.

4. Confirm Discord’s output device and system volume
- In Discord’s audio settings, verify that the selected output device is the one connected to your headphones or speakers.
- Play the Accessibility Preview again after selecting the device.
- Open the operating system’s volume mixer and make sure Discord is not muted or assigned an unexpectedly low application volume.
- Check the physical headset connection. For a USB headset, disconnect it, try another USB port, and reconnect it before restarting the test.
A game, music player, or voice call can be audible while Discord is routed to a different device. Test with other applications temporarily quiet so you can identify which output is speaking.

5. Check browser permissions when using Discord on the web
The browser client uses browser speech capabilities that can differ from the Windows or Mac system voice used by the desktop app. Make sure the browser has permission to produce sound and that the tab or site is not muted. Check the browser’s site controls for Discord, then verify the browser tab, operating-system mixer, and selected output device as one chain.
If you normally use the browser, sign in to the official desktop app and repeat /tts test. The reverse comparison is equally useful. A result that changes between clients points toward the speech engine or client audio path rather than proving that the command syntax is invalid.

6. Restart Discord and the device, then update
- Quit Discord completely rather than leaving its window minimized.
- Restart the computer.
- Install any pending Discord update and apply current operating-system updates.
- If your headset uses USB or another detachable connection, reconnect it after the restart.
- Run the short Accessibility Preview and
/tts testagain.
Discord’s general audio troubleshooting guidance includes restarting Discord and the device and keeping the operating system and relevant drivers current. This step is especially useful after changing output hardware or installing an update.
Use the desktop-versus-browser result as evidence
| Test result | What it suggests | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Preview is silent in both clients | A Discord playback setting, output selection, system mixer, mute/deafen state, or headset path is blocking speech. | Recheck Accessibility, output device, mixer, physical connection, and restart/update status. |
| Desktop speaks, browser is silent | The browser speech engine, tab/site permission, or browser audio route differs from the desktop path. | Check browser site sound permissions and output routing; use the desktop client while isolating the browser issue. |
| Browser speaks, desktop is silent | The desktop client’s selected output, operating-system mixer, system voice, or local installation path is the likely difference. | Verify the desktop output device and mixer, then restart and update the app and operating system. |
Preview speaks but /tts test does not |
Playback itself works; notification scope, channel permissions, message location, or mute/deafen state is more likely. | Set a suitable Notifications TTS scope and test in a channel where you can send messages. |
| The command cannot be sent | The channel or role does not permit the necessary messaging action. | Try a channel where you have permission or ask a server administrator to review the override. |
Discord states that TTS follows the default speech settings of the platform in use. The browser and desktop app therefore do not have to use the same voice, rate behavior, or speech engine. A client difference is diagnostic information, not evidence that one message was malformed.
When TTS works but sounds wrong
The voice is too fast, slow, or difficult to understand
Adjust the Text-to-Speech rate in User Settings > App Settings > Accessibility, then use Preview after each meaningful change. Keep the rate moderate while troubleshooting; an extreme setting can make a spoken test easy to miss even when playback is functioning.

The voice differs between Windows, Mac, and the browser
Discord uses the default speech settings of the platform where it is running. Browser speech engines can differ from Windows or Mac system voices, so a different accent, pronunciation, or cadence is expected when the client changes. Treat the working client as a way to narrow the fault, not as a universal replacement for the other engine.
Only some messages are spoken
First identify whether those messages were explicit /tts commands or notification announcements. Then compare the channel with the Notifications TTS scope you selected. A “currently selected channel” scope will not behave like “all channels,” and a channel permission override can prevent a command from being sent even when your personal settings allow it.
Audio-path checks that are easy to miss
- Mute and deafen: confirm neither status is active in Discord before judging a silent test.
- Application mixer: the operating system can mute or attenuate Discord independently of the master volume.
- Output handoff: plugging in a headset can move Discord to a new device while other applications remain on the old one.
- USB connection: a different USB port can restore a headset that is not being detected reliably.
- Browser tab state: a muted tab or blocked site sound permission can silence web Discord while system audio appears normal.
- Competing audio: pause loud games, streams, and calls during the test so a quiet TTS clip is not masked.
These checks address the complete path from Discord’s speech request to the physical speaker: permission to trigger, client speech engine, selected output, operating-system mixer, and connected headset.
What not to conclude from a failed test
- A visible
/ttsmessage does not prove that playback is enabled; the Accessibility option can still block speech. - Working voice chat does not prove TTS is working. Voice chat and synthesized speech can use different settings and engines.
- A silent browser test does not prove Discord’s command is broken. Browser speech capabilities can differ from the desktop system voice.
- Buying a new headset is not the first fix. Discord’s own troubleshooting sequence prioritizes settings, permissions, routing, browser access, connections, restarts, and updates.
- Changing several settings simultaneously makes the result harder to interpret. Run Preview or
/tts testafter each major change.
A repeatable checklist for future failures
- Send
/tts testin a channel where you can send messages. - Run User Settings > App Settings > Accessibility > Preview.
- Confirm “Allow playback and usage of /tts command” is enabled and set a usable Text-to-Speech rate.
- Set User Settings > Notifications > Text-to-Speech to the scope that includes your test channel.
- Review channel and role permissions, then clear mute or deafen status.
- Verify Discord’s output device, the operating-system volume mixer, browser site sound permission when applicable, and the headset connection.
- Try the other official client to separate a speech-engine issue from a shared Discord or hardware issue.
- Restart Discord and the device, update the operating system and relevant drivers, and repeat the short test.
Following the sequence in this order prevents a common mistake: trying to repair hardware before confirming that Discord is allowed to speak, or changing notification scope when the underlying output device is muted.
Bottom line
Discord TTS is restored most often by enabling playback in Accessibility, selecting a non-blocking Notifications TTS scope, testing in a permitted channel, and correcting the output path. If only one client fails, investigate that client’s speech engine and audio permissions; if both fail, work from Discord’s settings through the system mixer and headset connection before restarting and updating.
