If Discord volume keeps resetting, first identify which volume changed and when. Discord has separate input/output controls and per-user sliders; Windows has a per-app Volume Mixer; and Discord’s attenuation can make other audio sound quieter only while somebody speaks. The quickest repair is to check Discord’s selected devices and levels, reset Voice & Video settings, then test Windows routing and the physical headset path.
What “volume resetting” means in Discord
The phrase can describe several different symptoms. A slider may visibly jump to a new value, or the sound may merely seem quieter under a specific condition. Before changing settings, note the platform (Windows desktop, another desktop operating system, browser, iPhone or Android), the affected client, and the exact trigger.

| What changes | Typical trigger | Where to investigate first |
|---|---|---|
| Discord input or output volume | Restart, update, joining a call, or a device change | Discord User Settings > Voice & Video |
| One person’s volume | A user-specific slider changes or displays incorrectly | The user’s volume control in the call or voice channel |
| Windows’ Discord volume | Windows Volume Mixer returns Discord to 1 or another low value | Windows Sound settings and per-app mixer |
| All other audio sounds lower | Only while another participant is speaking | Discord Voice & Video > Attenuation |
| Sound disappears or changes device | USB reconnect, sleep, restart, or plugging in another headset | Physical connection, driver, and selected output device |
Discord’s support guidance is to verify both the input and output devices and their levels. A Microsoft Q&A case describes Discord appearing at volume 1 in Windows and notes that Discord-side settings can still be responsible, so a Windows mixer value alone does not identify the root cause.

Fix Discord’s own volume and device settings
Check the selected input and output
- Open Discord and select the User Settings gear.
- Open Voice & Video.
- Under Input Device, choose the microphone you actually use instead of leaving a disconnected or ambiguous default device selected.
- Under Output Device, choose the headset or speakers you want to hear Discord through.
- Set the input and output volume sliders deliberately, then use Discord’s microphone test or a voice channel to confirm the result.
Explicit device selection matters after a USB headset, monitor, Bluetooth device, or webcam has been connected. Windows can change its default playback device while Discord retains another selection, creating the impression that Discord “forgot” a volume.

Reset Voice & Video settings
If the values change again after a restart or call join, use Discord’s built-in repair before reinstalling anything:
- Go to User Settings > Voice & Video.
- Scroll to the Debugging section.
- Select Reset Voice and Video Settings and confirm.
- Re-select the intended input and output devices and set their levels again.
- Close and reopen Discord, then check whether the values persist.
This reset is reversible in the practical sense that you can configure the settings again, but it removes custom voice choices. Record unusual settings first if you need to reproduce them.
Stop Discord from lowering other audio when someone talks
If music, a game, or a video becomes quieter only while another participant speaks, the value that is changing may not be your headset volume at all. Discord’s attenuation feature reduces other application audio during voice activity.
- Open User Settings > Voice & Video.
- Find Attenuation.
- Move the attenuation percentage to 0% if you do not want Discord to reduce other sounds.
- Join a call and test with another application playing audio.
Discord describes this behavior directly: “This is a feature called attenuation! You always have the option to turn attenuation off.” The setting affects perceived volume during speech, not necessarily the value shown by Discord or Windows.

When Windows shows Discord at volume 1
Inspect the per-app Volume Mixer
- Open Windows Settings > System > Sound.
- Open Volume mixer (on some Windows builds this appears under advanced sound options).
- Locate Discord in the list of applications.
- Raise its volume and verify that its output device is the intended headset or speakers.
- Play a test sound in Discord, close the client normally, reopen it, and check whether Windows retained the value.
Windows stores application-specific levels separately from the master volume. A Discord entry at 1 can therefore be a mixer or routing problem even when system audio is loud. Conversely, Discord’s own output setting can still override what you expect, so check both locations rather than repeatedly changing only the Windows slider.
Repair a mixer entry that keeps reverting
- Restart Windows after correcting the mixer value; a stale audio session can recreate an incorrect entry.
- Confirm that Discord is routed to the same playback device selected in Windows Sound settings.
- Install current audio drivers supplied for your computer or motherboard, then restart.
- If the device vanishes from the mixer, disconnect and reconnect it, try another USB port, and check whether Windows recognizes it in its output-device list.
- If the value still returns to 1, treat Discord settings or a Discord-side defect as possible causes rather than assuming the headset is broken. Microsoft Q&A documents this kind of unresolved interaction between the Windows mixer and Discord.
Use the headset and USB connection as a diagnostic test
Software checks cannot correct a failing cable, loose connector, unstable USB power, or a headset that repeatedly disconnects. Test the physical path in a controlled order:
- Unplug and firmly reseat the headset or headphone connector.
- For USB audio, move it to a different USB port directly on the computer rather than through an unpowered hub.
- Select that device explicitly in Discord’s Voice & Video page and in Windows’ output-device list.
- Make a short call or play a test sound while watching for a device change or reconnect notification.
- If possible, connect a second headset with a microphone and repeat the test.
A second headset is an isolation tool, not a guaranteed cure. If the replacement keeps its volume while the original does not, the original headset, cable, adapter, or port is suspect. If both behave identically, concentrate on Discord, Windows routing, drivers, or the operating-system audio session.

Keep the software stack current
- Update Discord from its normal desktop updater or current app package.
- Install pending Windows updates and the current audio driver for your hardware.
- On mobile, update both the operating system and the Discord app.
Discord’s September 8, 2026 patch notes list an iOS fix for voice-input settings such as Auto-Sensitivity and Push to Talk switching off after a restart, as well as a desktop fix for a user-volume slider display problem. Those fixes demonstrate that audio-setting defects do occur, but they do not establish one universal bug behind every volume-reset report. Version and platform still matter.
Perform a clean Discord installation
Use this only after checking the settings, mixer, devices, and drivers:
- Sign out of Discord and quit every Discord process.
- Uninstall Discord using your operating system’s application settings.
- Remove leftover Discord application data only if you are comfortable deleting cached local files; do not delete unrelated profile or game data.
- Restart the computer.
- Download and install the current Discord client from Discord’s official download page.
- Sign in, select the devices again, and test before restoring optional voice customizations.
A reinstall can replace corrupted local files, but it will not repair a bad USB connection, an incompatible driver, or a Windows mixer value that another application keeps changing.

Confirm that the browser tab has permission to use the microphone and that the browser’s output is routed to the intended Windows device. iPhone and Android
- Install pending phone-system and Discord updates.
- Check Discord’s microphone permission in the phone’s app-permission settings.
- Raise the device media and call volume while Discord is active; mobile systems can use separate audio states.
- Review Discord’s voice settings and test with and without wired or Bluetooth accessories.
- On iOS, Discord documents cache controls at User Settings > Voice > Developer Settings > Cache Actions. Use those controls when a stale local cache is suspected.
If a setting returns to its previous value only after the app is killed or the phone restarts, note the exact setting and iOS or Android version when contacting support.
Choose the next fix by symptom
| Observed symptom | Most useful next action | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Only other apps become quieter during speech | Set Attenuation to 0% | Confirms a deliberate Discord feature rather than a reset |
| Discord input/output sliders move after restart | Reset Voice and Video Settings, then reselect devices | Tests Discord’s stored voice configuration |
| Windows Discord mixer returns to 1 | Check per-app routing, update drivers, and restart | Separates Windows-session and driver issues from Discord controls |
| Audio changes when the headset is moved or reconnects | Try another USB port and a second headset | Separates hardware or connection faults from software |
| Only one client or platform is affected | Compare desktop, browser, or mobile under the same conditions | Narrows the fault to that client, permissions, or cache |
| Nothing changes after all checks | Collect logs and open a Discord support ticket | Provides evidence for a client-side or account-specific defect |
What to include in a Discord support request
Do not report only “volume keeps resetting.” Discord asks for details that allow the audio path to be reproduced:
- Operating system name and version.
- Discord client type (desktop, browser, iOS, or Android) and version.
- The exact slider that changes: input, output, an individual user, or Windows’ per-app mixer.
- When it changes: after restart, update, joining a call, reconnecting a device, or while another person speaks.
- Screenshots of Voice & Video, including the input/output device list and relevant volume controls.
- Screenshots of the Windows Volume Mixer when applicable.
- The headset or microphone model, connection type, and whether another USB port or headset was tested.
- A Discord debug log, following the current support-ticket instructions.
This evidence distinguishes a reproducible setting reset from attenuation, a Windows routing problem, and an intermittent hardware disconnect. It also lets support match the report to a platform-specific defect without assuming that every report has the same cause.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes that waste time
- Changing Windows master volume when the problem is Discord’s per-user slider.
- Reinstalling Discord before testing attenuation or resetting Voice & Video.
- Calling attenuation a volume reset when the drop occurs only during speech.
- Testing a new headset without explicitly selecting it in Discord and Windows.
- Assuming a patch-note fix for one iOS or desktop symptom applies to every operating system.
- Reporting a reset without recording the value, trigger, client, and device.
